When I saw the title I thought you meant Vichy Ireland (with Occupied Ireland just up the road). This Banana "Republic" hasnt exactly been free economically either with its Neo-Colonial set up. The attack on Public Sector workers by Rabbitte shows that he is little different from that French git. There could be trouble ahead.

The solidarity between a broad spectrum of French society is only unified on the basis of their opposition to these new labour laws - I predict that the Chirac government will be forced to back down - the anger will remain among the most radical groups who want to see the system fundementally altered in France but will evaporate among those who have a stake merely in ensuring these laws are not successfully implemented - just because they are angery over these labour laws its does not necessarily follow that they want a new Revolution - in fact if Chirac and co backed down and were forced to conceed perhaps in the long run they might regain their political support after what might prove to be a "quirk" - they wont be stupid enough to try the same program again but they will remain in power perhaps with a new mandate - to be seen to be protecting French jobs would certainly a wise political move for the Chiracists.

& I admit to getting a wee bit excited by them. Last night I called an old friend who was engaged in doctoral thesis studies during the general strike in the Spanish state of 2003. Her grandparents lived in the mining north of Austurias and Cantabria, and never got the chance to strike. Every time they even grumbled they were shot at. They weren't even offered the opportunity to read and write much. Their grand-daughter is now an academic and specialist in their struggle. I remember so well how we ran along the streets of Barcelona in 2003 shouting at the few remaining shops to close passing out the CNT paper, and how with certain shame the only businesses not to close that day were 2 "irish bars".

it proved a watershed, the next day Aznar's government did its best to hide the stoppage and underestimate the participation. When he finally "went away" (as far as it seems he may go in this life) the insult to the media and workers caused that day of official disregard and manipulation of information took pride of place on a list of over 120 "lies" and "misdeeds" played in loop on the local tv of Barcelona.

So being excited I have written to the French to reclaim the republic in the style of mr Chirac's TV speeches :-

Not since the creation of the 5th French Republic has there been such an enduring assault on the meritocracy. I'd ask leftists in Ireland to reflect on this. We do not need as is often suggested "one single united party" of the left. We simply need to recognise that we attract different sectors and traditions to our interpretations of current reality, of realpolitik and enjoy and reap the same benefits of our action. So you all have the hymn sheet. Practise. You will be very surprised at the harmony that will be heard when we sing our slightly different songs without the Tuba of the greedy rightists.
This year you may change the regime which has governed "Ireland" badly for all its "sovreign" history. & to do so, you must accept that the parties of the right - FF, FG and PD are different interpretations of the same arrogance & complacency.

Serious and mediocre politicians get to eat "Antoine Carambe" suppers, but they dare not risk making a joke. That is the trapdoor their regimes stand upon. I began to write long ago, that what galls me, is the attempt to talk about "Europe" by Ahern, Chirac, Blair, Berlusconi, &c.., as if they understood what or who europeans are or more importantly _were_ in the lead-up to the EU constitution vote.

This is our continent. We are the europeans. & we do not accept any more erosion of our democratic rights, liberties, social securities and expectations, education, pensions, housing, in the name of a "US, UK, anglo-saxon neo-liberal neo-conservative mediocre globalisation".

As of 30 minutes Bretagne (Brittany), Poitiers and Toulouse reported to be closed to traffic and transport by passionate young people who enjoyed their general strike yesterday and are carrying on with it. They don't like the CRS (police) much either, and well would you???? SO thats why they've set up barricades on these "arteries" of France. & jolly good luck to them. This is the real thing.

Exactly 1 year ago during the "month of germinal year 217"** the C.P.E. (a capitalist spawned attack on education) was dropped amidst unprecedented mobilisations. The French Presidential race began officially yesterday, there are 12 candidates & it seems the person doing the best in the polls with voters of all ages is Le Pen followed by Sarkozy. There will be a first go on the 22nd of April - and then a "run-off" between the 2 remaining candidates.

I presume you know the name of the 2 main candidates.
Segolene Royal is the socialist-centre-left hopeful who will represent Europe opposite the US president Hilary Clinton and leader of Congress Mrs Pelosi. It's great to see women get ahead & may some of us men reflect it's all due to the invention of the bra and the lessening popularity of the moustache. If the western democracies elect women to their tippy toppy positions in the next years I predict confidently that HMG will change gender. Women are thus making the abdication of Mrs Windsor a certainty.

Segolene Royal is of course very nice looking which is the first thing people say about her. But some are critical : her brother was on the team of "french sas" who blew up the Greenpeace boat Rainbow Warrior.

Nicolas Sarkozy is the right-wing candidate who has been bleating on about paedophiles being "born that way" (caused by genetics) in the last week. He is one of the most evil people to have been born in the 1950's. Right up there with our own Michael Mc Dowell.

Jose was the last of the candidates to collect the requisite 500 nominations for French presidentials. As a forum-goer he's a bit SWP'ish & naturally as dour & humourless as dishwater - but as a farmer he shows no inhibition with going to Paris - appears to be anti-gun & has been to jail. I believe only people who have been arrested and detained for their political beliefs or activity ought be allowed contest jobs like the Presidency of France.

He may not destroy the EU this time (gets over 2.3% ov the votes & I'll buy you a crossaint) but at least he has ensured the art of preserving ancient buildings has been preserved.

a man who has spent the week gurgling just above the level of determinist pond-life which we were supposed to deal with about 250 years ago? He has reiterated his belief that young French people suicide because of a "genetic flaw". He has declared paedophilia to also be genetic.

I don't think I have to explain the flaws of "determinism" to you. After all Sarko didn't get to that level. But do you think young Irish people suicide because they've dodgey genes? Do you think someone rapes a 3 year old because "they can't help it" and it is programmed into their behaviour by some quirk of either God's plan or random chance? How will you go about implementing social or criminal policy for the 21st century based on that? Are we to throw billions of euros at the search for a "suicide or tanathos gene" likewise "the pederast gene"? We didn't find the "gay gene" - did we? & then what???? list all the individuals carrying those genes? keep an eye on them? sterilise them?

Many people do not realise what a very serious & profound crises we are facing in Europe. Neither I nor my colleagues at any level can spoon feed you. Read the article above - just the article & reflect on the points I made on "leadership" and how splendidly good looking Segolene the girlfriend of Hollande is running against a man who wants to ignore suicide as something beyond the reach of the Elysee "for the moment" & they ("these leaders") all went to the best school for political elites on the continent outside Eton.

no genuine updates except Le Pen is massaging his "no darkies" vote by pointing out Sarko has a few melanin genes above the French average. Schivardi is appealing that voters see the game for what it is - & tactically vote now - for the second round - which if he doesn't get to - he will not himself vote in. That's the sort of nod in the direction of anarchism and our known stance on abstention I needed. Schivardi is now my mate. If you have to vote and have a vote - vote for him.

I bet the lads have never even got that far in their pondering of what qualifies a woman to be Ireland's first citizen.

French media is having fun with Le Pen's suggestion that Sarkozy is not French enough to be their President as well as his jibe at the melanin gene thing. Of course many of you might haven't read the profiles of the 12 candidates at the comment above http://indymedia.ie/article/75208&comment_limit=0&conde...89597 and thus don't appreciate that Segolene Royal (the centre left socialist candidate) was born in Senegal. Of course today Senegal is independent and does a nifty sex tourist economy thing with European women who like tall boys with melanin. Segolene Royal's boyfriend Francois Hollande was last year (when this article was originally written) the centre left Socialist party of France choice to be President & get his finger on their nuke button. But he wasn't good enough for the French voters not that he cares he lives with a Senegalese woman who everyone thinks is very nice looking .
Anyway - Hollande keen not to lose sight on the centre left Socialists object of a Blairite/Brownite/Clintonite third way regime has responded to my candidate's (Schiavardi) call for sensible and wise voting and abstention. He's reported today as appealing for leftie voters to do so tactically. Oh yep. We're @ "tactics" now..,

Just to wrap it up and make it easy to understand for Irish people - Sarkozy isn't losing sight on the rightwing objective of a Thatcherite/Reaganite/Bushite free market shake-up. You'd swear the 2 things were the same wouldn't you? Thatcher & Blair : Clinton & Bush.

Well, if you swear that you're getting there. My work is almost done. I have attached an illustration of the 12 candidates for President of France a job which requires very little thinking power, a stomach capable of many years of Antoine Carame cuisine (put him through the search engine and familiarise yourself with my work) without losing the ability to eat an anglo-saxon or celtic dinner of Mrs Beeton meets Smoked Salmon. This flexibility of palatte though is beyond many of us. It's the money our parents had at the supermarket.... it shapes your political future. (ask Feargal Quinn). But all French politicians know their grub - we could be really ironic now and insist they elect Marie-George Buffet even though she is a marxist leninist.

They are now (on telly and in their newspapers and blogs and political chat forum things) talking about TERRORISM. Great, very reliable - (well it was till we broke its spell) but the Al Q bombing of Algeria has helped them all concentrate. wonderful.

Francoise Bayrou (centre centre centre) appeals to people with the obesity gene who don't like how extreme Segolene Royal or Nik Sarko are.

The "sans papiers" (or migrant worker) assemblies entered the election process today Friday 13th with occupations of an EDF (electricity provider) office in the 11th arrondisement of Paris and then later the campaign HQ of "centre centre centre" candidate Bayrou. First off the wicket to applaud and support their call for immediate regularisation of all migrant workers were Jose Bove (moustache party) and Becancourt (young enough trot to believe in the proletariat) & of course the Greens whose Dominique Voynet (doesn't take a good photo) always support the migrants in their struggle and especially the "Collective neuf" http://9emecollectif.net/ even if things do get a bit violent & you know - photos get taken.

Segolene Royale spent the day touring her childhood home in France, proper French France with no independence claims being made on it - the Senagelese born presidential hopeful showed that real French politics has nothing to do with sunbeds. Her ugly boyfriend Francois Holland rejected suggestions by an ex-prime minister Michel Rocard (old socialist party before it became the 3rd way party) to adopt a novel "third way" strategy and announce an alliance with "centre centre centre" candidate Bayrou.

National Front hopeful Nicolas Sarkozy went in search of poor people today and a photo opportunity looking perplexed next to people who highlight his sallow rather than properly darkie complexion. Accordingly he brought the suffering journalists of France's commercial media out to the periphery of the city. It has not been reported if they drove their own cars to see him stand next to Karim Zéribi who is president of the "parliament of the sink estates" a nobel institute akin to the assembly of Bradford. But it is reported that mr Zeribi made him wait an hour and thirty five minutes before giving him the photo. This is all of course related to the word "racaille". Readers will remember Sarkozy used the old fashioned term approximating to our own "scumbags" to describe poor people especially those whose kids went burning the sink estates in 2004. True to form, & do remember Sarko didn't just go looking for a photo-op today - he's looking for votes- & well, not many people who live there are ever going to vote for him..... so there was a ratio of 3 cops to each 10 others. Hmmmmmm. maybe the carpark was safe after all.

Stickie Brickie candidate G. Shiavardi is still whinging about not being allowed send out his electioneering pamphlets after a right wing legal challenge ruled his self-description as "candidate of the mayors" was unconstitutional. He's also getting a bit touchy about being called a Trotskyist now as well, being quoted as saying even though most of his friends are workers party he has never really one. I'm beginning to doubt he has the stamina.

"no darkies" candidate Le Pen has spent the day offering phlegm on the "terrorist threat" warning that France is on a powder keg. Apparantly according to the grand old man what happened in NYC and Washington on the 11th of September 2001 and Madrid on the 11th of March 2004 and London on the 7th of July 2005 could happen in Paris. I really am amazed how people still talk about these three events as if they were the work of one and the same entities or how little progress they make in concocting alternative versions. But lazy people vote. & since many lazy people also carry the obesity gene (whose discovery in Oxford was published this week with the surprise finding that about 40% of Britons carry such a gene) I suppose Mr "centre centre centre" Bayrou of the UDF party (its proper grown up name) who were formed of course to get Valery Giscard d'Estaing into the Elysee. I told you about Giscard during our campaign to stop the EU constitution http://indymedia.ie/article/68685 coz he was the man who wrote it & I was the man who told you where it got it wrong. Course other people did too. But they didn't get all the wrong bits. But thankfully I know the French don't need me as their president (told you as much in the "Sunday Papers alexandrine edition" http://indymedia.ie/article/74930 which deals with De Villepin and the crises in the 5th republic) so that's why I resisted the temptation to fake a French birth cert and contest the job of 23rd president of France myself. Not that I would. I never really got out of bed early enough for these high-powered jobs - but come the sinister shadowy night of hooded figures in the candlelight and machinations I'm on top form...... horses for courses

How many enfranchised voters of France will bother voting on Sunday?
Will the 5th republic under its 23rd president of France & save civilisation?

The highest rate of unhappy misfit depressed teenagers in Europe. The emergent obesity. The lingering horrible legacy of having been just "too nice looking" once upon a time.

This is of course the worst showing for us abstentionists in history & considering 85% of hte enfranchised vote - we may be facing the remarkable situation of a result with more democratic value than usual. Astounding.

I'm sure you'll be delighted to know Sticky Bricky candidate Gerard Shivardi has lost the poll coming last. exit polls affording him 0.3% of the vote. Well done gerard!

Eager and enthusiastic young enough Trot to believe in the proletariat Besancenot might not have won his 5% target - exit polls put him at only 4.3% but he has undoubtedly led the Trot and Proper Leftie vote. Which exit polls indicate will be around 11% of votes cast.
The far far right "suck your teeth" FN under Le Pen getting roughly the same. And Fred Nihous of the "i like guns!" party got even less than the moustache but more than the mason.

what this means.
We have to do more work to persuade people to "not vote". We can't just count on nihilism or disgust at the far right thing. Our "non-vote" showing has been a disaster compared to local elections in the UK (65%) Venezuela (65%) or Columbia (67%). I'd suggest we've got complacent. It'salso obvious that of those who vote - they do so for "far left" and "far right" in equal quantities now returning France and thus Europe to a classical "left" / "right" 2nd round contest.

Nicolas Sarkozy is the right-wing candidate who has been bleating on about paedophiles being "born that way" (caused by genetics) in the last week. He is one of the most evil people to have been born in the 1950's. Right up there with our own Michael Mc Dowell

Well perhaps it is because he has a record of opposing Islamofascism which you seem to support, so that explains your hatred for the man.

But the present President of France has said this:

This is certainly an important statement and one which I welcome.

Further I am certain that the great majority, like 99 per cent, of Jewish people living in Ireland feels the same way about Israel.

I would say that on this issue, and on the issue of Islam Fascism, this is a very principled man.

That is very instructive and shows that what goes for the Left today are anything but and have betrayed the principles of socialism and have lapsed into following Palestinianism, which is indeed a form of antisemitism.

I am at a loss to explain it except to venture the thought that there may be a return to the glorious traditions of the French Revolution, especially on the issue of secularism and the separation of Church and State.

Sarkozy undermined the secularism which is at the heart of all French republics when he created the "French council of Muslims" (consult this official record http://www.journal-officiel.gouv.fr/association/index.p...F2003
on the 7th of June 2003 and thus gave a semi-institutional voice to the international Muslim Brotherhood who are linked to Salafist terrorists, Islamists of the horn of Africa, all the Sunni's and basically the whole crew (except for Osama). I know I spent a bit of the day trying to get through to Osama on the sat phone throwing money at my local western union office. Then I wound down by listening to Fiddler on the roof and singing along with Tevyl if I were a richman.....la la la la la

Segolene Royal's acceptance of defeat which came more promptly than in any election of such scale or importance this century. She did not challenge the count, appeal for recounts, call foul or refuse to accept the result. She did not run to the supreme court. Our own president Mary McAleese fresh back from fundraising for her party in the USA could thus send a congratulations telegram to Sarkozy quicker than she or her government thought to send one to Prodi, Zapatero, Merckel or GW Bush.

Segolene Royal's nobility must be remarked upon in that simple act of gracious defeat.


All left candidates who had contested the first round supported her directly or asked their voters to vote against Sarkozy with the exception of Gerard Schiavardi the candidate of the "mayors" and mason sticky bricky chap who came last in the polls who called for complete abstention in second round.

I think it is fair to say "We salute Segolene for her nobility in defeat".

There will be a national demonstration against the Thatcherisation of France's economy, culture, labour market, social structures, ethnic balance, social services and foreign policy on the 16th of this month as President-elect Nicolas Sarkozy will take office.

Citizens are asked to assemble at their local mayor's office. "Dress for the occasion". If you don't live in France either its European geographical bits or its oversea departments or space base - you can find a consulate, cultural office or embassy near you. They have the 2nd largest diplomatic service in the world.
