offsite link ?It?s Time to Scrap the Asylum System? Fri Feb 21, 2025 17:17 | Will Jones
It's been exasperating to watch as, in defiance of the wishes of Western electorates, the cultural make-up of our countries is radically transformed. It's time to scrap the asylum system, says Lionel Shriver.

Sometimes Trump's mercantilist thinking is so radical as to be wildly, crazily brilliant, as with the Gaza Riviera plan. But on Ukraine it's letting him ? and the West ? down, says Ian Rons.

my favourite illustrations in today's english language press april fool's editions are Steve Bell's "hoody and 2 fingers" (which we discussed on the Orwell thread the other day C/f http://indymedia.ie/article/75075?&condense_comments=fa...44206 http://indymedia.ie/article/75075?&condense_comments=fa...44212 http://indymedia.ie/article/75075?&condense_comments=fa...44220 [ = blame PAt C he's the brit newspaper infiltrator] take on anti-social laws. http://www.guardian.co.uk/cartoons/stevebell/archive/0,....html,

and of course this by Frank Miller of the Irish Times http://www.ireland.com/newspaper/front/2006/0401/ (who doesn't mind us copying his stuff) of Perpignan / Perpinya fans who are playing Munster in Landsdowne road. Perpinya for those of you who don't know is in French occupied northern Catalonia.

Pau.
endevant.
sooner or later the French state will have to start talking peace and no doubt about it.

These brave men didn't need masks to make their point coz they're in the Irish Free State to play our national game Rugger . The Irish Free State under its Lehandakari / Taoiseach Bartholomew Ahern is in complete solidarity with the Paisos Catalanas Republic of tomorrow which will stretch from Perpinya and Rosello occupied by France in the north to Alghero in northern Sardinia occupied by Italy , {as soon as Alghero is liberated Paisos Catalanes will liberate the Sardinians from the Italians and build a peace wall. to the southernmost extremities of Valencia / Alicante occupied by Spain to the troublesome valley of Sant Julia de Lòria in the west occupied by Andorra.
of course not forgetting Ibiza which is occupied by Brit drug dealers and DJ's

And thus to prove the solidarity, it is no surprise that Lehandakari Ahern has announced the building a new bull fighting ring at the Tara M50 interchange, to be called the Tain Bo Coolering.

oppressed northern catalans can fly their flag in southern ireland.

democracy has nothing to do with establishing paisos catalanes. And lehandakari Ahern can stuff his bull ring, Catalans don't have bull fights. & we've dropped our claims on Alghero in Sardinia.
Its this sort of prejudice and ignorance which makes us a laughing stock of national liberation movements globally. Columbus was a Catalan. He wrote his diary in Catalan. A catalan discovered the Americas. not an Irish monk, not a basque fisherman. It was us.

The protest above was a serious action. at a serious wall. for serious people.
& rugger is not your national sport it is an imposition of the French state along with "le basket" and has done our young people as much damage as the imposition by the Spanish state of the "bottelon". Our kids don't need bubblegum, don't want to drink on the street, and don't play your imperialist games.

Yiz can all Fk off. we'll find solidarity elsewhere.

the serious reader can go to this link and learn about our homeland in english. not gaeilge.

I'm sympathetic to catalan nationalism (well, why should Madrid be the place where decisions about people in Figueres' lives?) but the following national myth-making is an example of how ready even the 'nationalism of the oppressed' can easily lend itself to justifying colonialism;

"Columbus was a Catalan. He wrote his diary in Catalan. A catalan discovered the Americas. not an Irish monk, not a basque fisherman. It was us."

Funny, I thought it was the Native Americans.

None of us can disregard the presence of at least a quarter million members of the pan Catalan national liberation movement in Londonderry this week. These are momentous times which call for reflection, a bit of holding the tongue, and calm, rational, deliberate chat.

Londonderry, Doire, Derry..??

and surprisingly whether you call it Derry, or Londonderry or Doire whomever you're talking to will understand exactly what you mean.

the simplicity of complex problems is really quiet astounding.

I can see the quality of the debate in Indymedia Ireland is falling to unexpected levels. Some individuals are so bored that can't find anything more interesting to do than insulting others. Please don't make a project like this become worth closing down.

Changing the name of the Council to Derry City Council was a sectarian action aimed to undermine the confidence of the Protestant Working Class. Under Socialism both the City and County would retain the name Londonderry.

surely everyone can call it what they want?

refuse to refer to it as "LondonDerry" myself, because I wouldn't like it if Baghdad was renamed "WashingtonBaghdad", it just goes against my own politics.Really,it should just become Derry,Derry County or something along those lines.

Hi,

People will call it what they want, Derry, Londonderry or Doire but the point is that it is actually called Londonderry and this really has very little to do with London at all. It was renamed from Nutfield to Derry Calgach and then onto Londonderry. It was called Nutfield in 1718 and renamed to Londonderry in 1722 (not much later). We all love to go back to our roots etc and pretend that we are touch with everything that our ancestors did "for us" - cobblers! Perhaps to stop all the hassle and connotations that go with whether you call it Derry or Londonderry we should call it Nutfield and that way everyone is happy......except those who are all troublemakers and like to use silly, unimportant stuff like this to cause trouble.

Anyway - chill!
