Since the mid 1990’s the privatisation of water services has been championed as the solution to delivering water to 1.1 billion people without access to potable water in developing countries. Privatisation of the service has failed to bring water to over 200,000 people in the impoverished city of El Alto, Bolivia where people living on $2 a day are being charged $500 for a basic water connection.

In 2005 the indigenous people of El Alto launched a water war- demanding fair and affordable access to water. Pitted against one of the world's largest water multinational corporations, ‘Suez’ and international financial institutions such as the World Bank the people rejected private control and called for the expulsion of the multinational. Now Suez threatens to bring a crippling $50m lawsuit against the Bolivian government for breach of contract. In 2006, the struggle for water continues in one of the most highly indebted countries in the world.

This benefit gig will support independent documentary filmmakers Muireann de Barra and Aisling Crudden to make a film about the El Alto ‘Water War’ and bring this story to a wider audience. The film is being produced by award winning film-maker Donnacha Ó Briain (Chavez: The Revolution Will Not Be Televised - 2003) A short pilot made by the filmmakers will be shown on the night.

Due to unforeseen circumstances Rónán Ó Snodaigh will play without the other members of Kíla as advertised. The rest of the line-up is to go ahead as advertised. We hope you will still join us on the night, which promises to be a great session!
