There will be a potato planting day in Dolphin's Barn Community Garden on Saint Patrick's Day. We will meet in the garden about lunch time and spend the afternoon there. There will be a potato planting day in Dolphin's Barn Community Garden on Saint Patrick's Day. We will meet in the garden about lunch time and spend the afternoon there. The potatoes from last year's crop were really delicious. This is an Irish, organic, sustainable and free action to take on 17 March. Later in the year we can reap the rewards - tasty spuds, no food miles, no packaging, no pesticides. See other stories about Dolphin's Barn Community garden on indymedia for map, photos and more information about the garden. |

Paddys day spud planting in Dolphins Barn community garden
friday, paddys day spud planting and other nice stuff
sunday, 2 pm onward tidying up, eating (bring stuff to share if you can), making place beautiful and.................
making the mosaic bench
we are attempting to make something along the lines of this image which is of a lovely curvy 100+ year old bench in parc guell in barcelona, it was created by the artist antoni gaudi - we are inviting people to come with colored plates, tiles, mirrors etc- this will be carefully smashed up and the bits will be placed in the new bench -
more images of these benches

dutch architect herman hertzberger did a community garden in a housing block exactly like this; invited the whole community for a big day or weekend of smashing plates and setting bits in benches, really lovely stuff
so come along if you can

mosaic bench ; soon to exist in dolphins barn
if we make a seat we were thinking of use the concrete blocks that are
in a pile around the other side of the warehouse (I think they're still
there?) otherwise we can focus on a wall mural or something on the
ground.
I'll try and do a bit more internet research. I saw something about
filling canvas bags with soil from a hole we would dig to make a
foundation . And using chicken wire as a key for the cement - which might also
allow for more fluid shapes.
so if anyone has any suitable tools please bring them along:
trowels, plastering gear
chicken wire
hammer
nails
wire
also paint, paintbrushes, containers.....anything thats going a begging
that would make the garden a more beautiful place.
see ya friday,
ruth
the dolphins barn garden looks like it could be forced to close up, trees have been removed by builders and more, but we plough on, the garden will be a year old in 2 days- it would be nice and appropriate to celebrate a year of growth
update
sunday the 19th of march we were met by one of the directors of the white heather industrial site, our first meeting despite attempts by us since the outset to establish a contact, he seemed in favour of what we were doing but had recieved a letter from the council saying the place needed to be tidied up. since then we contacted the council and carried out tidy ups. things have moved on quickly and last week builders moved in and began initial building work, we are in consultation with the factory and the council who have already given us a grant and are supportive of this project
latest update from one of garden crew:
Anyways, the litter warden
signed off on the cleanup.
Despite this, it appears that Brian Pasley is not prepared to allow us
to continue to use the site (apart from watching the
spuds.......feckity feck). The primary reason given is security (and liability).
so we wait and see

first time in a few years not to be planting spuds on paddys day, last 2 on old family farm in west clare (re-opened since the tiger fucked off) and few years before that in community gardens in spain or dublin. Such lovely memories from seeing these photos. Today on the walking tour of barcelona, we had a few green shots to mark the day that is.
