Marxism 2006 March 3,4,5 Central Dublin Every year hundreds of people from across Ireland and beyond attend the weekend socialist conference called Marxism. This year is marked by growing resistance to occupation of Iraq which is only one brutal part of Bush’s plans to dominate the Middle East. |

The vast majority of the speakers are members of the SWP yet only one is speaking on behalf of the SWP.
Be honest, tell people who they are and stop trying to make out that this weekend somehow involves a wide range of community, political and trade union groups.
while you are discussing the muhammed cartoons in your mullah freindly manner you might be interested in the views of socialist and secular iraqi & iranian women who have to fight those selfsame mullahs. they dont think the cartoons are islamophobic. heres what the The Organisation of Women's Freedom in Iraq & the Organisation for Emancipation of Women Iran have toi say about the cartoons:
"The recent controversy over some caricatures of Mohammed gave the Islamists an opportunity to wage a hysterical protest internationally. In many cases, this took a violent form and was clearly aimed at silencing those who dared to even portray Mohammed.
In these demonstrations many of the banners on show were emblazoned with shameful slogans. These included - “Those who insult Islam must be beheaded” and “Freedom go to hell” plus various other fatwa’s and threats against cartoonists and others who have the temerity to “insult” Islam.
This is not the first time these forces have attacked people’s rights in the Middle East and Europe. Many writers, singers, even barbers and doctors have been targeted in the last 30 years let alone the enslavement of women in the Middle East under the pretext of the defence of the ‘honour’ of Islam. The furore over these caricatures is simply an excuse to stage another worldwide campaign to attack the right of freedom of expression. They want to turn Europe into yet another battlefield for their foul ideas"

An Iranian socialist is actually speaking at the Marxism conference.
Eh, where in central Dublin is it?
Its in TCD.
This story about writers supporting the cartoons of Muhammed ties in nicely with one of the conference sessions. All of these writers come from an Islamic background and they say that the cartoons have got nothing to do with Islamophobia.

RBB is speaking twice? Why so few times?
hes also speaking on behalf of 2 different organisations! actually i think hes also speaking at the final rally on behalf of swp. so thats 3 times on behalf of 3 different groups.
i see ritchie browne is now a fulltime atgwu official. is he on the average wage of those he represents, subject to immediate recall? was he elected to this position? perhaps the swp have changed their stance on fulltime trade union officials.
A full time official - Is this true?
When did they change to this policy?
This is the annual showpiece event for the SWs. Any reports on how it went?
