Is Putin Really the Enemy? Tue Feb 25, 2025 13:00 | James Leary
It's taken three years for Putin to get a few miles inside a run-down country like Ukraine, but the Establishment still pushes the idea that he can roll over the rest of Europe. Is he really our enemy, asks James Leary.

1 Outline of the current situation
Ruth opened the meeting and it started with a brief introduction of all present. Following this Ruth gave a brief history of the garden through 2005 and drew a very nice sketch showing the beds and the potential area to be cleared. The beds are currently under green manure and there is an area west of this under cardboard. The garden also has a large quantity of horse manure, some compost areas and som fruit bushes.
2 What to plant
Agreed to continue with three rotation beds (brassicas, roots and legumes). Ciaran is doing up a more detailed sketch specifying actual preferences for planting. Penny might even get this laminated to put up on a garden notice board. The rotation beds are:
-Brassicas: cabbage, spinach, celeriac, celery, artichokes
-Roots: carrot, parsnips, sweetpotato, beetroot, radish and turnips
-Legumes: peas, beans (runner,broad…), onions
http://www.yankeegardener.com/resource/croprotate.html
The beds are to be extended into the new cleared area. The remaining half will be used for potatoes. We will try and experiment with companion planting also. Currently some whitecurrant and blackcurrant planted to the west of the site (update….on sunday some pears, cherry and apple trees went in). Some of the apple trees will need to be moved. The very western area will be used for a small tree nursery. Jenny will be able to provide beech, oak, ash and larch. Lara and Kieran are looking after the herbs. Ruth is not looking after the turnips.
3 Layout plans, Propagation, Water, Tools
The discussions on planting largely decided the overall layout. Ciaran is preparing a detailed layout plan. For propogation purposes plastic tunnels will be sourced. Likely items for growing under plastic are courgettes and peppers. Ciaran O’Byrne knows where we can get a plug and another bath. (update….the new blue buckets are great). We’ll try and get some more free tools on Leinster Freecycle. Tool storage will also be addressed in the next month.
4 Finances
Patrick still has the €600 cheque from the Council. This needs to be lodged in Rialto Credit Union. In the interom people should keep receipts.
5 Access and ownership
We may try and get back in touch with Whiteheather Estate to see if we can get access via the gate. Better ladders for getting over the wall should be provided. A separate ‘site improvement’ workday was recommended to cover these issues.
6 Seats etc
The idea of making a clay oven for use in the summer was raised. This will form part of the ‘site improvement’ works.
7 Agreed working days.
Agreed working times are:
Sunday 1pm onwards
St Patricks Weekend (Friday & Saturday?)
8 Communication and promotion
There are currently three garden promotion methods (riseup.net, Indymedia and Dublin.ie) Paul, Kieran and Ciaran will look at the website issues. Kieran will try and bring the Dublin.ie page more up to date. (update…think a leaflet drop on any new apartments on Cork Street would be a good idea)
