Former law lord attacks 'folly' of Iraq war
By Robert Verkaik, Legal Affairs Correspondent
Published: 19 October 2005
The war with Iraq has made the world a more dangerous place and London a target for terrorist attack, according to one of Britain's most senior judges.
Lord Steyn, who retired last month as a judge sitting in the UK's highest court, described the invasion of Iraq as "military folly" and accused the Government of "scraping the legal barrel" in trying to justify it.
The former law lord told an audience of lawyers and civil rights campaigners in London that it was wrong for the Prime Minister to have called the rule of law a "game".
He said: "The maintenance of the rule of law is not a game. It is about access to justice, fundamental human rights and democratic values."
He added: "After the recent dreadful bombings in London we were asked to believe that the Iraq war did not make London and the world a more dangerous place. Surely, on top of everything else, we do not have to listen to a fairy-tale."
If you do the crime, you should have to do the time.
The Pentagon has reneged on its offer to pay a $15,000 bonus to members of the National Guard and Army Reserve who agree to extend their enlistments by six years, according to Sen. Patty Murray (D-Seattle).
The bonuses were offered in January to Active Guard and Reserve and military technician soldiers who were serving overseas. In April, the Office of the Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs ordered the bonuses stopped, Murray said.
“This is outrageous,” the senator said in a telephone interview. “It makes me angry that this administration has broken another promise to our troops.”
A Pentagon spokeswoman, Lt. Col. Ellen Krenke, confirmed the bonuses had been canceled, saying they violated Pentagon policies because they duplicated other programs. She said Guard and Reserve members would be eligible for other bonuses.
Krenke said some soldiers had been paid the re-enlistment bonuses, but she was unsure how many or whether the money would have to be repaid. Murray’s office said that as far as it knew, no active Guard or Reserve members had received the bonuses.
Did Lord Steyn oppose the war when he was a Lord? I'm asking out of genuine interest. It seems to me that too many people wait until it's too late to make their voices heard. For example, Lord Steyn, as a Law Lord, was in a very good position to do something about Britains involvement in the war. I hope he used this position when it mattered.
Mark Conroy.
