The solution to ending N3 commuter misery is simple, but getting the Dublin to Navan and Kells rail line re-opened will not be easy because there in no political will for it to happen.

A new website has been launched with an online petition (www.meathontrack.com) for the reopening of the Dublin to Navan & Kells line, via Dunshaughlin and Ratoath.

The petition aims to collect 5,000 signatures initially, and is addressed to Noel Dempsey, TD for Meath and Government Minister.

The solution to ending N3 commuter misery is simple, but getting the Dublin to Navan and Kells rail line re-opened will not be easy because there in no political will for it to happen. At present, the only rail solution on offer to commuters in Meath is the Dunboyne rail extension which hasn't even been confirmed by government yet.

The big problem with the Dunboyne extension is that it isn't a rail solution for Meath - it will go as far as the Dublin-Meath border where it stops, and many of us living in Meath will have to pay 2 M3 tolls each way to get there, as well as Park & Ride charges, and that is before we even pay for our rail tickets.

And the bi-election promises of re-opening the line at a later date seem empty as building the M3 across the route of the old Navan line without putting in bridges to facilitate the lines re-opening means that it is unlikely that the Dublin-Navan line will ever be reopened again. One estimate is that bridging the M3 at Cannistown, near Navan at a later date will add at least €50m to the cost of re-opening the line, making the cost of the project prohibitive. An Bord Pleanála recently stipulated that the N6 bridge the route of the disused Limerick-Athenry line to facilitate the lines re-opening in future - why does the M3 not bridge the Dublin-Navan line?

The Meath on track campaign has 5 set goals:

1. To ensure that the existing Navan-Drogheda-Dublin line remains in operation and opens to commuter trains.
2. To secure immediate provision of 2 non-stop express commuter trains from Navan to Dublin via the existing Navan-Drogheda-Dublin line, twice a day.
3. To ensure that the M3 plans are changed to bridge the Navan line at Cannistown, etc.
4. To scrap the token rail solution that is the Dunboyne extension plan in favour of re-opening NOW the Dublin-Navan-Kells line via Dunshaughlin & Ratoath.
5. To secure planning for re-opening of Broadstone Station in Dublin as a terminus for the Navan rail service (as it was in the past), to avoid IE's excuse of lack of station capacity.

The railway line is the only solution to the Blancardstown M50 bottle-neck.

Duleek is on the Drogheda to Navan line.

Services be brought to Duleek too as both Duleek and Slane are growing as quickly as Navan and have the same problems.

duleek is on the line and can be catered for easily, I would imagine. something has to be done. there is 4 and half hour round commute trip from Kells now and the traffic is worsening every morning. The christmas rush han't even started yet

M3 bridge not in plans but an bord Pleanála have confirmed that the plans will change.

Next questions is what will the 10 year plan hold for Meath..

There are rumours flying that the Navan line will be in the mix.. Or a bluff study to take the heat off anyway..

Just what are we debating or petitioning here?

There is "NO CONTEST" to the argument concerning the fundamental aspects of what is at question here.

1/ Will a rail Link be of benefit to Meath?
2/Will the selfish and diabolical destruction of thousands of years of National and Natural Heritage with the building of another road be of benefit to Meath ?

These are the simple questions yet the "Powers that be" will NOT make decisions which will affect the lives of not only Meath residents but the whole of the Irish/Celtic community worldwide forever.

Is it not about time that those so called Leaders are "Demanded" to make a call one way or the other and then rather than all the skullduggery which is happening, named people will be taken to task for their actions.

I think it is an absolute travesty that this road is even being considered as it is "Not Required" and all it boils down to is another nail in the coffin for democracy, hammered in by our fastly declining and morally festering politicians and businessmen who care nothing for the people or their heritage but only for their selfish and self gain ethics.

i reasently bought a house in kells i work in south dublin every day i moved back form manchester where i lived for ten years i wanted to rais my children at home but i did.nt relise what i was geting in to i now spend a lot less time wit my family due to long travel distances to work & mainly traffic we have to be up extra early i am geting a bit stressed out becuse of all the driving if i was able to get a train to work like i always did in manchester it would be a lot better i realy miss the train becuase one you get on the trai you can relax read a book or newspaper i realy think the people of kells & of meath need a railway it is better in all ways reduce traffic polluion & for some people indpendence
