The men have said they are then willing to purge their contempt and it remains for Justice (?) Finnegan to accept this. A mediator which is acceptable to both sides will be appointed early next week.
Anyone in Dublin who can get down to the courts to show support and solidarity please do.
Rally for Justice will take place tomorrow regardless.
Rossport Five to appear before High Court
30 September 2005 11:07
The High Court has made production orders for the appearance of the five Co Mayo men jailed over their opposition to the Corrib Gas pipeline.
5 men, 94 days.
It took just 5 good men and 94 days to defeat Shell.
This is Shell's MacLibel.
Untold damage has been done to shell.
They will never now get to exploit the Corrib gas field on the cheap.
Corrupt politicians remain to be exposed.
A good days work.
Rally tomorrow and don't forget about the excellent benefit concert on Sunday night.....
Sun 2 October

Well done the Rossport Five! Great news. Excellent.
This is fucking grate!
will th demo go ahead tomorow
I'd imagine the demo will go ahead. The 5 lads will probably be at it. There is still other stuff to be resolved in the dispute at a legal level. Just because they're out doesnt mean the campaign against Shell is over.
and the fundraiser gig on sunday evening in the Ambassador will be going ahead to so be sure to be there. This is deadly!!!!
brendan philbin was speaking live on midwest radio outside the court a free man . Is that enough proof
mid west radio....... gooood
rte.......baaaaaaaad
indymedia.....indymedium
the rally will be much better now! Not everyday that rallies to free ppl have the ppl they wanted to free at the rally!
The rally and gigs WILL go ahead.
It is important that the clear message goes out:
THE CAMPAIGN WILL CONTINUE and will be bigger and stronger than ever.
I've just heard the Rossport 5 might have a couple of minutes on The Late Late tonight!
All of us who have given support to the Rossport 5 in the past Months owe it to them to continue the campaign which led to their imprisonment in the first place.
This is not the time for complacency or for people to think that the job is done.
Those 5 men and their families have done this Country a great service.
They had the courage of everyone elses convictions.
Good luck to them and their families.
I thank them for their stand.
A proper recognition of their efforts would be that everyone who can get there should be at the Rally tomorrow.
On the 16th of June 2005, "Bloomsday" the 5 were still free, and protesting. That was the morning the corduff's abandoned breakfast was photographed and we read of how Shell had illegally entered the lands in Rossport to begin illegal work on an illegal pipeline.
That was the day in the flow of narrative of any nation or people when Mary Corduff was brought to Belmullet (some 20 miles away) to seek medical assistance got the stress she was suffering at the sight of one the largest corporations in the world's workers on her land backed up by an unusually large contigent of local Gardaí.
Her husband has been released today after 94 days detention.
In that time we have seen national and international attention placed on the legality of Shell's actions and plans.
Government ministers appointed to serve the nation, have changed their tunes and words, throughout it all keeping to the line that they couldn't really intefere.
Shell has in these last 94 days been involved in serious incidents in other countries most particularly Nigeria, and is still the subject of environmental law suits, and its Irish operations have been sold off to an Irish venture capitalist company.
The 5 Rossport Wives went from shocked and stressed to letter writers, campaigners, articulating the concerns of their community and many more beyond.
Everyone, whether involved in grass root political campaigns or multi-national-corporation campaigns has learnt something from this.
Many votes for the careerist politicians have been lost.
Please,
For the sake of the millions on this Earth who do not get released from prison, who do have voice as entities like Shell pillage their lands and abuse their rights, do not allow a single vote
to return to those who remained so curiously silent or unhelpful these last 94 days.
is the pipeline still being built
This is not over by a long shot but the power is back with the people!
It in last paragraph implies no rally tomorrow and that shelltosea campaign has wrapped up and gone away
YEAHHHHHHHHH, this has made my weekend to hear that these gbrave men have broken Shell!!! Ill be toasting ye all weekend. Wish I could be at the rally.
Slan from Norway,
S
The CAMPAIGN will INCREASE and will be hyper charged by today's news.
There are lots of events and actions planned.
Stayed tuned to www.shelltosea.com
The RALLY tomorrow and Sunday's big concert ARE GOING AHEAD!!!!
The West's awake!
The Rossport five have been released FOR NOW from Cloverhill prison. The courtroom was packed with supporters as the decision became clear. There was a group of up to 100 outside during the duration of the hearing which lasted about an hour.
The men could still face jail however as there will be a hearing regarding theissue of civil versus criminal contempt and the punitive nature or not of each on the 25th of October.More details are to emerge on this issue...
The national demo is to go ahead as planned tomorrow and the hope is with all the media attention todays announcemnet
will attract that the numbers could be very big indeed!
The men vowed to fight on as they were surrounded by ravenous journalists at the gates of the Court(and flanked by politicians, many of whom have been absent on the entire issue). The rain could not dampen the spirits of the men and their supporters though as they defended their actions and pledged to continue in the same vein.
NOW FOR JUSTICE!
DEMO TOMORROW 2PM
BE THERE!
Fantastic News!!!!
It shows that People Power actually does work (as if thousands of years of history has not proved that already).
The rally will certainly go ahead. BE THERE. Contact your friends and everyone you know. This is what we will be singing LOUDLY through the streets of Dublin tomorrow as 250,000 people did through the streets of Edinburgh a few months ago!!!:-
POWER TO THE PEOPLE
CAUSE THE PEOPLE GOT THE POWER
TELL ME CAN YOU FEEL IT
GETTIN STRONGER BY THE HOUR
CAN YOU FEEL IT IN DUBLIN
CAN YOU FEEL IT IN MAYO
CAN YOU FEEL IT IN ROSSPORT
POWER! POWER! POWER!
Everyone should take strength from this. As Finatan O'Toole said at a talk af weeks ago - This case was always winnable. Though there is still a long way to go.
Extremely important that the campaign keeps going untill Shell are truly sent to sea.
Also extremely important that everyone does what they can to eradicate the councils decision on banning posters in Dublin. This is a direct infringement on people's rights and is affecting so many important campaings like this one. For example a lot of good posters were put up around the city last night, only for they all to be dragged down again. Disgraceful. A few of us protested a the councils offices on Wood quay earlier today and the Irish Times sent along a photographer to us. This is obviously a huge issue.
People must be allowed to put posters up on a pole in any functioning democracy.
We all owe a lot to the courage and conviction of the 5 brave men from Rossport. Again we must stand beside them untill they, their families and their communites are truly safe from corporate greed and government corruption.
Roll on tomorrow!!!
We must keep this campaign going.
The Shell and State/government PR machines will try to present this issues as solved since the Rossport 5 are now free. They will hope the public interest dies down now.
What this campaign has been largely about has been the theft of our natural resources by Shell & StatOil with an awful lot of help from corrupt politicians and the blatant disregard for people's safety and lives. It is a case of profit coming before people and the environment.
The Corrib Gas giveaway whereby they do not have to pay taxes or royalites was a set of corrupt deals. These must be reversed. This is central. Also a number of laws were changed very undemocratically which strongly favour Shell/StatOil in making use of the law to strong-arm decisions and actions that go against the people affected. Namely the one on compulsory purchase orders that were passed specially for this project and was passed in the Dail when few deputies were about and late on a Friday a number of years ago.
Yeah sure, the courts and shell were defeated by PEOPLE POWER!!! You're like a bloody exerpt from Scooby Doo.
Shell have no plans to work on the pipe until feb, and lifted their injunction. They'd still be in prison tonight if Shell had wanted it or was pragmatic.
No problem with the 5 men, they have the courage of convictions, its the people who come here claiming victory as the men are out - like they had ANYTHING to do with it.
They had option to purge contempt, they didn't, my point was they they're out because Shell saw no pragmatic reason they should be in prison when no pipework is possible.
There's no victory for either side and you can have your little parade tomorrow, it, like the last 3 months, won't make a blind bit of differene to the courts come February and when the real crux of where to go to from here begins.
The courts, unlike lawyers, don't listen to the mob. As for waste of sperm, classy....
"Lawyers for Shell had asked that the temporary injunction against the men be lifted, as it is now not possible to carry out any work on the site because of a safety review."
ie: Shell asked for the injunction to be lifted...
Im going to make each of your points redundant and then maybe you can become active in the campaign,or ANY campaign for that matter, and stop wanking over your keyboard in frustration.
A -I never cklaimed victory now the man are out,in fact my posts indicate the opposite, saying that the campaign is just beginning. As for having anything to do with it,as an activist in Dublin Shell to Sea and a member of the Rossport Solidarity Camp from time to time,I DO believe I had something yo do with itt, dont particularly care what you think on that one.
B-"they're out because Shell saw no pragmatic reason they should be in prison when no pipework is possible."
Incorrect. As a lwaw graduate and someone who was present in the High Court today,I cant tell you that this is not in itself the reason they are out,BECAUSE it wasnt the reason they were committed in the first place.A legal technicality was raised regarding the punitive differences between civil and criminal contempt of court, this to be discussed on the 25th.
Im not going to merit you with any more responses, you want to know more, visit Shelltosea.com.Armchair activists rule man!
Pathetic contempt for other human's rights.
Yawn wrote: "...the people who come here claiming victory as the men are out - like they had ANYTHING to do with it."
1. The people who post here are not claiming personal victory. They are celebrating a victory by the five men. A victory for direct action over one of the world's largest companies. A victory for people and a small community over the combined power of government, courts and corporation.
2. One of the first things Micheal O Sheighin said when he came out of the court was, "You people deserve credit, you kept it going. You kept us going. We have ye to thank."
----
In another post, Yawn said
"Your little parade tomorrow ... won't make a blind bit of differene to the courts come February and when the real crux of where to go to from here begins."
- Just you watch what happens, you small-minded, self-loathing twit: next year, when Shell tries to get onto the land, hundreds of local people and supporters from elsewhere are going to block them. The state will have to jail huge numbers of people in order to lay even one section of pipeline across the land of those who have resisted.
Don't underestimate the power of direct action.
"And if, when all a vigil keep,
The West's asleep! the West's asleep!
Alas! and well may Erin weep
That Connacht lies in slumber deep.
But, hark! a voice like thunder spake,
The West's awake! the West's awake!
Sing, Oh! hurrah! let Shell & Statoil quake,
We'll watch till death for Erin's sake"
What a load of nonsense - as they said themselves they're not socialists or anarchists - i hope they don't look realise the muppets campaigning for them have hijacked the campaign for their own ends ..i.e. socialist worker being sold at 'free the rosport five demonstrations......
I started a livejournal community called shell_to_sea simply as another place on the web where people could post news and discuss the situation. It's clearly stated on the User Info page that it isn't run by the Shel to Sea campaign. Is that alright as far as Shell to Sea are concerned?
It is now flying over the four courts.
The Norwegian Flag
Judge Joe Finnegan did everything he could, yesterday, when he was ordered to release the Shell 5 to make it look like his own decision.
Just as when Shell ordered him to lock the men up he had to pretend that he had some say in the matter.
What a crock.
The Norwegian government ordered their release.
Bertie could not without Shell’s permission.
We might as well run the Norwegian flag up over the courts and the dail.
How come, anyway, that the Norwegians own 25% of our gas and we own nothing?
Perhaps they don’t have the likes of Burke and Lowry up there.
Flag up
Are you complaining about "Johnny Foreigner" determining on matters in "your" country?
Stand by for the obligatory appearance by the Eternal Jew...
Brilliant to see the 5 Rossport men released.
The Saturday Rally was well attended.
The 5 men of Rossport were dignified and articulate since their release.
they have right on their side and deserve our continued support
The jarring point for me on the Friday was to witness some politicians practically pushing people out of the way to get into the photographs.A look at the papers on Saturday will identify them
It was the same on the television news on Friday night with rubbernecking politicians pushing their way into the frame
I would absolve Gerry Cowley from involvement of this show and tell exercise by some political ambulance chasers.
the same people were conspicious by their absence on the picketlines
The Rossport Five, Irish Ferries and the recent news of the defunct/non-fuctioning 150 million wages software package priced at 8.8 million as recently as 1998.
We hear the political powers speak of non-interference regarding the business community and their dealings for fear it could cost us financially as a nation. Such interference could lead to potential foreign investment moving to other shores. We should not be enticing but vetting these companies and then engaging in talks should they suit our needs. We should not step on Irish citizens to suit them. Our elected representatives sit idely by passing the occasional comment on how they frown upon such things but are powerless to act in such situations. The Department of Justice says it’s a matter for the Courts, The Department of Health says it’s a matter for the Health Services. We need to put people in charge of such things. This may seem naïve of me, but maybe we need to form some sort of governing body to oversee such issues, to act in the best interest of every Irish citizen, to make sure each person is represented both fairly and justly, to take accountability for the road we take and the choice of route not only socially, but financially also, a government of sorts. Wait a minute; we have a government…of sorts.
Dole,
You ought to make that direct democracy not parliamentary democracy. See for example the pamphlet: Parliament or Democracy (URL below)
You say:
>>but maybe we need to form some sort of governing body to oversee such issues, to act in the best interest of every Irish citizen,
If such a body was formed it would quickly be co-opted by the system and actually end up being used against us and to further obstruct us. The problem is not that we need another body or department in the existing structure. The problem IS the existing structure.
Hi, this is great news.
Is there somebody from the campaign who could do a live radio interview for the resonance FM indymedia new show on Wednesday 1pm to 2pm?
If so please email.. ben at riseup dot net ASAP
ben
I was trying to say that we currently have no active government, as they pass the buck at every turn. I was saying that they basically don't do their job. I don't think we need another governing body, (god forbid) just rid of the people running the current one, as they may as well not bother turning up, (even though they often don't). I was trying to say that we need representation which is what they are supposed to give each and every one of us, not hide behind departments initially put in place to serve us.
