Cindy Sheehan arrested outside White House

category international | anti-war / imperialism | news report author Monday September 26, 2005 20:31author by Justin Morahan - Peace People Report this post to the editors

Breaking news

Cindy Sheehan was first of a number of protestors arrested outside the White House a short while ago.
She was one of several who sat down on the road in protest. The crowds chanted as she was led away: "The whole world is watching"

Happy to Duckie.

As for DeLay, I can say with supreme confidence that it will not affect George Bush's chances of re-election.

Noel, can you back that up that assertion that Cindy is being handled by George "where are you know" Soros?
Anyway on the other side of reality, the US republican party now have to now fend off the Tom DeLay scandal he's just gone down on a criminal charge.
I doubt Georgie "w.a.u.n.?" Soros did that.

Cindy is a poor choice for anti-war poster girl.
Her Soros funded handlers are pulling the strings thinking she's a vote winner.
When she met with President Bush she said "I know he's sorry and feels some pain for our loss. And I know he's a man of faith."
Then, much later, when the Bush haters had briefed her she changed this to "one of the most disgusting experiences I ever had"
Not too savvy.

Most Americans are either passive or indifferent in their support or condemnation of the war. The venomous, ranting Bush hatred is completely unrepresentative of the vast majority of citizens - hence the truly savvy Democrats not getting involved.

Joshua Frank in a new piece in Counterpunch writes that he was wrong and that in fact Cindy Sheehan has specficially argued that Hilary Clinton's position on the war is hollow (this was at a rally outside HC's office!). Good for Sheehan!

"n a recent interview with the Village Voice Sheehan contended that she was "so frustrated" by top Democrats like Hillary Clinton "who should be leaders on this [war] issue, but are not," arguing that it is "time for them to step up and be the opposition party. This war is not going to end unless the Democrats are on board with us."

It sure would be nice if more antiwar activists were to follow Cindy's lead on this one. If the majority of protesters took their protests to the front steps of each elected pro-war Democrat as well as Republican, we might have a big-time movement on our hands. I'll admit it; Sheehan is savvier than I gave her credit for. She knows that the antiwar movement should stick to the war, not lesser-evil politics. Too bad Sheehan wasn't making headlines during the 2004 elections; if she had been, the antiwar movement might have not been so soft on the pro-war Kerry campaign."

When you actually look at the numbers -- numbers killed, countries invaded, international treaties undermined -- over and over again you'll find that the "liberals" out-do the "conservatives". Chomsky makes this point in many of his books.

Sorry R.isible, - I posted and then had to leave the computer. But I knew that others would fill in the details.

A good link for some recent news of Cindy is http://www.villagevoice.com/news/0539,ferguscd,68201,2.html

In that report, Sarah Ferguson says she has been barnstorming the country since leaving Camp Casey in Crawford, sleeping in different houses, and eventually ended up with her supporters lobbying Congressmen and women. Last Monday she was thought to be among 300 activists arrested in a mass civil disobedience action outside the White House. The report was wrong.

Among others, she has met or is to meet with Hillary Clinton who supported the war, Senate Minority leader Harry Reid, and the chief of staff of Senate Majority leader Bill Frist. (Apparently, they know on which side their bread is buttered)

But at the massive anti-war march on Saturday last she turned toward Congress and asked: "How many more of other people's children are you willing to sacrifice for the lies? Shame on you for giving [Bush] the authority to invade Iraq."

There were between 100,000 and 300,000 on the march according to estimates. The fact that a record two thirds of the American public now disapproves of Bush's handling of the war in Iraq is partly as the result of Cindy Sheehan's campaign, according to Ferguson. The tone of the marchers was less Bush-bashing and more sombre urgency to get the troops home, she says

Republican operatives are now "trotting out their own pro-military moms" in an effort to blunt Sheehan's message. They launched a "You don't speak for me, Cindy" cross-country bus tour, which arrived in Washington on Sunday with only several hundred supporters, some of them angry parents of dead soldiers.

According to the LA Times 41 were arrested on Monday.

Joshua Frank has been merciless in Counterpunch in exposing the rotten nature of the two-party oligarchy in the USA. He pays special attention to the Democrats who are supposed to be more peaceful and caring than the Republicans (despite WW1, 2 and Vietnam being carried out under Democrat presidents). In his latest article he notes that the entire Democrat leadership was absent from any of the anti-war protests and that Cindy Sheehan appears to be trying to put an acceptable face on Hilary Clinton's absence. Someone should point out to Sheehan that not only is Hilary absent, she's backed this war to the hilt, is married to one of the greatest war criminals of the century and has repeatedly called for "staying the course" in Iraq.

Just on the phone to friend in NYC about our forthcoming trial. The friend had just called Camilo Mejia on his mobile. Said he 'd call back as he was in the middle of getting arrested at the White House.

Mejia was released from miltary brig earlier this year after being sentenced to a year imprisonment for refusing to redeploy to Iraq. He was deployed to Iraq at the time of the invasion with the Florida National Guard was deployed in the fieldand then at the Abu Grab U.S. gulag.

When he retuned to the U.S. he went underground. He surfaced in uniform denouncing the war as in conflict withinternational law and his christian conscience. More background check the link below.....

Speaking yesterday before her arrest today...
Cindy said ...

Last weekend, Karl Rove said that I was a clown and the anti-war movement was "non-existent." I wonder if the hundreds of thousands of people who showed up today to protest this war and George's failed policies know that they don't exist. It is also so incredible to me that Karl thinks that he can wish us away by saying we aren't real. Well, Karl and Co., we are real, we do exist and we are not going away until this illegal and immoral occupation of Iraq is over and you are sent back to the depths of whatever slimy, dark, and loathsome place you came from. I may be a clown, Karl, but you are about to be indicted. You also preside over one of the biggest three-ring, malevolent circuses of all time: the Bush administration.

The rally today was overwhelming and powerful. The reports that I was arrested today were obviously false. The peace rally was mostly very peaceful. Washington, DC was filled with energetic and proud Americans who came from all over to raise their voices in unison against the criminals who run our government and their disastrous policies that are making our nation more vulnerable to all kinds of attacks (natural and "Bush"-made disasters).

Mainstream Dems have jettisoned this crank, knowing the Bush hating left which pulls her strings are so unrepresentative of the American people they'd be decimated at the next elections.

Perhaps she'll call for withdrawal of troops from occupied Washington DC?

Those who have been arrested with her include Cindy's sister Dee Dee, former state department official Ann Wright, Michael Berg, the father of slain US contractor Nick Berg, Media Benjamin of Code Pink and many veterans and their family members.

But it's better if posters specify where they are sourcing news from. Sure we can all Google for whatever it is, but it may not be from one of the standard sources and it seems like a waste of time to have everyone googling away when the original poster can just supply their source.
