With all 72 Lib Dem MPs supporting the mad Climate and Nature Bill, their clownish leader Ed Davey is effectively telling them to go back to their constituencies and prepare to live in mud and grass huts.

Critical Mass to Cloverhill Prison

category dublin | rights, freedoms and repression | event notice author Monday September 26, 2005 12:08author by anarchaeologist - DGN, Shell to Sea Report this post to the editors

Dublin Grassroots Network is bringing a Critical Mass to Cloverhill Prison on Saturday morning October 1 prior to the National Demonstration in the city centre to be held that afternoon.

Most of us know by now that five men, Micheál Ó Seighin, Willie Corduff, Brendan Philbin, Vincent and Philip McGrath have been detained in Cloverhill Prison for the past 90 days.

They are there for refusing to give an undertaking to cease their campaign of direct action against the gas pipeline passing through their community.

They are there at the behest of Shell and Statoil and with the seeming indifference of the government. The government is led by the same party responsible for giving away our right to our own natural resources in the first place. The same government continues to sell us all out to Shell/Statoil.

DGN are holding a Critical Mass to Cloverhill Prison in solidarity with the Rossport Five and the stance they have taken to defend their community against the oil multinationals and the state. We call on anyone with (or without) a bike to join us outside the prison at 11.30 on Saturday morning, where the men inside will be able to hear our support.

We leave from the Front Gate of TCD at 10.00 and will pass through the communities of the Liberties, Inchicore, Ballyfermot and Cherry Orchard, leafleting as we go.

Cloverhill is also on the 78A bus from the quays and close to Clondalkin Arrow station.

A map of the route will be posted soon...

Why is this event billed as organised by DGN when they havent met in over a year and don't even exist as "DGN" anymore?

It's GrassrootsDissent, no?

W is of course correct. DGN has ceased to exist (apart from on a few tee shirts) and is now GrassrootsDissent.

Members of GrassrootsDissent are organising the Critical Mass to Cloverhill and anyone can come along to show their solidatity with the Rossport 5, who, as of today have spent 91 days in prison.

Is Critical Mass still alive? Does anyone turn up for it? Does it have any chance of been effective? Certainly wasn't anyone with bikes (me included) at the last CM that I was at. Follow the link.

Certainly, there were up to 40 people at last Thursday's Critical Mass, despite the fact that it was held quite late in the evening.

Next Saturday's action has 3 objectives, using the Critical Mass to get them across. It's initially a demonstration of solidarity, a group of people getting together on their bikes to cycle to Cloverhill to make a bit of noise for the men inside.

It's also (hopefully) going to be a Critical Mass, where cyclists can take to the road in reasonable numbers and feel a little less vulnerable in the traffic flow. We're as much part of the city's traffic as the cars and trucks and we provide a credible alternative to gridlock and the creation of environmental pollution.

In one sense however it isn't a Critical Mass as we have a route and a destination.

A third objective will be to advertise the demonstration that afternoon by leafleting along the way.

It's about an hour's cycle out to Cloverhill. On yer bikes!

Looking for a bike trailer to put a sound system in if anyone can loan me one?

Got a nice collection of prison songs we can blast out along the way..

Just to say thanks for the imaginative effort and one of your objectives to publicise the national march at 2pm.
To offset postering prohibitions I suggest walking and standing and cycling and drive-by posters. The city is so dull as if we had nothing to talk about.
A line from a Ken Saro-Wiwa poem and which is our logo: SILENCE WOULD BE TREASON should ring along the way as his brother Owens arrives to be with us for the weekend of protest. Thanks too to the group going on the same mission against silence to the City Council offices at 1pm tomorrow Friday.

For the day that's in it, we might take a wee detour to the Shell garage in Kilmainham to pump up our tyres.

And maybe go back to the city via Kennelsfort Road (petrol's quite dear there at the moment!) and the Lucan Road (another stop perhaps?) down into Chapelizod...

If anyone's still got legs, we'll form a bike bloc on the demo itself.

Justice for the Rossport 5!

Ok, the Rossport 5 are free today, but the fight isn't over yet.

Those who were going to cycle to Cloverhill can join the bike bloc at the demo tomorrow afternoon. There'll be somebody at TCD in the morning to meet anyone who hasn't heard the news.
