Seville: Globalise the Resistance!
Rocking! The EU summit in Seville showed the anti-capitalist
movement is moving forward. Hundreds of thousands demonstrate as EU ministers faced big protests.
As the European leaders gathered, Spanish workers took part in a
General strike against attacks on unemployment benefits and workers' rights. This was just two
days after a successful general strike swept across Greece against the government's attempt at
pension "reform".
Thursday 20 June saw the biggest General Strike in Spain for many, many years. In Barcelona police
estimates (!) were that 500,000 workers marched on a day when not a single bus, train or metro
ran. Many workers must have walked miles to be on the march.
In Madrid there was again an enormous demonstration. The only public transport was a ´minimum´
service agreed with the unions.
In Seville, there were up to 100,000 workers on a demo held in the midday sun (for the TV
coverage) where temperatures soared to 40 centigrade. Again no public transport ran. A very lively
picket line was mounted at the main bus station at 5am. Restaurants and bars stayed closed as
Seville became a ghost town.
Everywhere in Spain the names of Blair and Aznar are linked as they push a racist agenda against
immigrants at the EU summit. The government here is in trouble and the representative from the
European TUC speaking at the Seville demo talked of the need for a European-wide general strike. A
slogan daubed on the side of a convent said
"Jesus tambien para" -"even Jesus is on strike."
Just two weeks before that 200,000 marched through Seville in protest
at government attacks. The connection between anti-capitalism and the trade unions is being made
around Europe. This is the most positive development for a generation.
The EU ministers spent most of their time planning a racist campaign to
clamp down on asylum seekers and to force through even tougher
legislation to victimise those seeking refuge from war and famine.
They want a Fortress Europe-on the outside desperate refugees, on the
inside low paid workers permanently scared of losing their jobs and of being thrown into
destitution. Just as they are depriving refugees of shelter and safety, they are depriving our
public services of funds.
All eyes should now be on the European Social Forum in Florence in
November.
Make sure the streets are covered in posters, that e-mails
Have been sent out to everyone, and contact trade unionists to invite them along. The building of
support in unions and workplace is going to be crucial to building for the European Social Forum.

2. Ryanair best mates with Jörg Haider
Jörg Haider, Austria's leading Nazi politician, is hosting a press
conference in London on Thursday to promote Ryanair's service from
London to Klagenfurt in Austria.
Haider is an unrepentant Nazi. Ryanair's Chief Executive. Michael
O'Leary has met personally with Haider and recently praised him at a press conference in Dublin.
Jörg Haider's visit to London will be marked by mass protests in Britain organised by the Anti
Nazi League.
Anti Nazi League in Dublin is organising a protest at Ryanair's offices
On Conyngham Road (100 yards further on from bus garage) on Thursday 27th June at 5.30pm.
3. Gay Pride Anti Capitalist contingent
Join the Globalise Resistance posse on this years Pride march in Dublin, starting off from the
Garden of Remembrance at 1pm this Saturday 29th June. We need to show solidarity with all groups
who are oppressed, and bring the spirit of the anti capitalist movement to the carnival that is
Dublin Pride 2002!
2 4 6 8- Is that Garda really straight?
3 5 7 9- No, he works for Lesbian Line!
4. Mobilising for the European Social Forum
The European Social Forum will be a huge convention bringing together thousands of people who
oppose the commitment of European governments to free market policies and growing militarism. It
is planned for late October or November this year in Florence, Italy.
The idea for a European Forum was proposed at the World Social Forum in Porto Alegre, Brazil in
February. An incredible 60,000 people came together at Porto Alegre. They discussed how best to
organise against the corporations that are wrecking our public services and our planet, how to
tackle the nightmare of Third World debt and how to end the desperate inequality that is being
created by neo-liberal economic policies around the world. The aim of the World Social Forum is to
build a global movement that can stop militarism and the drive to war, and point the way towards a
world in which people come before profit.
The European Social Forum will be based on the Call of the Social Movements that was issued at
Porto Alegre. The first Europe-wide planning meeting issued an invitation to all trades unionists,
campaigning groups, peace activists and concerned individuals who agree with that call to get
involved in organising the ESF.
Globalise Resistance wants to bring together groups and individuals to organise for the ESF in
Ireland. We want to publicise the event, build support for it, organise transport to Italy, and so
forth. Our first meeting will be in the Teacher’s Club,
36 Parnell Square
Next Tuesday 7.30pm July 2nd

report back meeting at their triumphant gig in the Temple Bar Music Centre last Sunday.

Jump To Comment: 1 2Why the hell should Ryanair / Haider not promote the new flight route? It is in their mutual interest, and also that of Ireland / Austria.
You claim that Haider is an 'unrepentant Nazi' - for what exactly should he be repenting, in your estimation? Further, what support can you offer for the facetitious assertion that he is a 'Nazi'?
Repeating hysterical slander you hear from some so-called 'anti-fascist / anti-nazi' groups does not further anyone's understanding of the issues and can only degrade your political reputation.
Also, you should be extremely wary of these particular groups. I have the feeling you do not really know them too well, but that if you did, you may well be less than enthusiastic to support their initiatives - be careful they don't convince you of the need to destroy Iraq, then a whole list of other countries!!
So please investigate before commiting yourselves to lost causes and people/groups more likely to be working for some state security agency than world peace with justice.
In my own opinion, the only important difference between Haider and any mainstream euro-politician of higher rank is his fearless and direct character. As far as their political viewpoints and goals go, well, it would be difficult to fit a credit-card between them.
For all the rest, sounds grand, although I would drop the 'Rocking!' myself.
Yours etc. BlackPope
It's interesting to see that Anti Nazi League have re-emerged. Will they be disappearing after this Haider demo? or will they disappear when the SWP have exhausted it of recruits?
Ryanair wants there to be contraversy over his new route, SWP/ANL/GR are playing into Ryanairs hands.
The question should be asked is Haider a Nazi? Personally I think he is, but I don't think his party is. The rise of the far right recently is not a rise in fascism, it is right-wing populism.
SWP/ANL/GR used Ryanair to go to the Brussels demo last december. latest protests are a bit opportunistic
