'Eco-anxiety' affects 78% of children under 12, a crisis that teachers say they are unable to cope with, new polling by Greenpeace has found. The solution? More ruthless exposure of children to alarmist material.

Ógra Shinn Féin Demand Rossport 5 Freedom

category antrim | environment | event notice author Friday September 02, 2005 19:50author by Ógra A - Ógra Shinn Féin Report this post to the editors

Ógra Shinn Féin are holding a protest Saturday 3 September at Belfast City Hall beginning 11.30am, demanding freedom for Rossport 5 and in support of Shell to Sea Campaign.

Ógra Shinn Féin tomorrow on Saturday 3rd September will hold a protest
outside City Hall in Belfast demanding the release of the Rossport 5 and the
cessation of all Shell operations offshore and onshore in Erris.

Ógra Shinn Féin spokesperson Barry Mc Colgan outlined “this Free the
Rossport 5 protest like the huge number happening through-out Ireland
sends a clear message to the Irish government that such actions are
unacceptable to the Irish people as a whole. Irish resources should be used for the
benefit of the Irish people and the 5 men incarcerated for trying to protect their homes and families should be fully vindicated.
This attempt to criminalise Irish citizens will not be tolerated and Ógra call on the Dublin
government to end this current project and renegotiate the overall deal for the Irish people.”

Damien, a chara, I'm from Belfast and have been involved in protests against Shell stations with members of Ógra Shinn Féin. I still feel that my question is a relevant one, as there are plenty of Shell garages in Belfast that they could have picketed.

Still, I suppose for propaganda purposes the protest outside the City Hall could been very good in terms of making people aware of what's going on down in Mayo (and now maybe in Donegal too).

Great to see solidarity actions taking place throughout the country. This type of solidarity action should be implemented wherever there is evidence of the interests of corporate profit being placed before the interests of people and communities (of which there is plenty) ie Indaver, Shell, Statoil, Raytheon, the current war against the Iraqi people etc etc. It is essentially the same struggle. The campaign has to be understood from a global perspective and not merely an issue of local or national interest and should be expanded on that basis.

it was Ogra shinn fein that started the petrol station pickets in the first place. so instead of making comments on the net about people who are actually out doing the work , why dont you get behind them

"What's the point of protesting outside Belfast City Hall? It'd be more effective if there was a protest organised against Shell itself."

I agree, might also help if they were protesting against the government in the Republic of Ireland in the Republic of Ireland.

A Movement to see how high they can climb on the misery of others. The Rossport 5 today - the 1981 hurger strikers yesterday. All for the Queens shilling.
Sell out all for a paycheck.

A movement for a 32 county Ireland that does little outside of Belfast........................and then they wonder why Vinny Wood got hammered in Mayo the last time out
