Statoil Depot Blockade

category dublin | rights, freedoms and repression | event notice author Thursday September 01, 2005 08:44author by anarchaeologist - Shell to Seaauthor phone 086 8537281 Report this post to the editors

Justice for the Rossport 5

Support the Rossport 5 by blockading the Statoil depot on Saturday 10th September from 8.30 a.m.

Statoil, the Norwegian state gas and oil exploration company, has been hiding behind Shell in relation to the consortium's activities in Erris. Over the coming months Shell to Sea will be pressurising Statoil to secure the release of the Rossport 5 by collapsing the injunction against them.
This is part of the campaign to have the Corrib gas refined offshore in a safe and sustainable manner, for the full benefit of the Irish people.

The Statoil depot is on Promenade Road, off the East Wall Road and we are asking people to come along from 8.30a.m. onwards.

People wishing to join in the Statoil depot blockade can meet at 8.30 a.m. at the roundabout beside the Point Depot at the Eastlink Bridge.

The blockade is taking place in quite a remote place so if anyone who has a bicycle could try and be there on bike that would help as they can go up and down to the roundabout to collect and guide people who arrive late/are lost/are misguided(!) etc....

Statoil and Shell to hell!

Quite a remote place! It would be easier to get to Norway! I'm going to the roundabout beside the Point Depot and there I'm staying...

Will there be hot tea and buns provided for the protesters?

As for the tea and buns... well I'll have a flask of coffee and a few cups with me...

As a local in templeville road, let me again report on a protest at the statoil there last evening. On this occasion there were twice as many protesters as before (6), so the protest truly is gathering momentum, congratulations. Unfortunately, as before, the effect was almost completely zero. Most ordinary folk jsut ignored and looked nonplussed at the attempts to disuade them from using the station. So whens the next one?

author by Bonzopublication date Fri Sep 09, 2005 10:11author address author phone Report this post to the editors

I didn't even know their was a demo planned there. Could you tell us who organised this Al. It wasn't advertised here or through Shell to Sea. Are you saying that a local group just sprung up and decided to picket it themselves, without informing the campaign and that this group is growing in size? Thats a good thing Al, not a bad thing.

author by Connachtpublication date Fri Sep 09, 2005 11:06author address author phone Report this post to the editors

It doesn't matter whether the campaign is growing or not for those people who use their own judgement and think for themselves, and don't need to rely on the tv ratings or media interpretation of an issue before they commit themselves to an opinion.

The situation on the ground hasn't changed. The people of Rossport are being exposed to extraordinary risk, and to top it all off are being smeared and insulted, directly and by implication, by state representatives and corporate representatives, who have plenty of money and full-time employees to engage fully with a PR campaign. This is grossly unjust.

Last nights picket was part of the local reponse to highlight the plight of the Rossport Five. It was the 7th such picket on this station. Despite the cynical comments from Al above local support is strong. There will be more protests at this station but we wont tell Al (i wonder what his occupation is)

Hope tomorrows blockade is a success

Al reckons he's a garda. For your own sake youd better do a tour of the site to find out his views on Garda brutality. Make sure you have a camera safely concealed on your next outing...

author by Alpublication date Fri Sep 09, 2005 13:53author address author phone Report this post to the editors

How are you measuring local support Pat? Is it based on the 6 or 7 people on the picket last night? Or is it by the numbers of people who turned away and refused to pass your picket? On either measure, its hardly impressive.....but keep at it all the same!

As of 11.00 this morning, up to 50 supporters of the Rossport 5 are mounting a blockade of the Statoil depot.

If you're in the area, please come down and support the campaign to bring Shell to Sea.

author by Shell to Sea'rpublication date Sat Sep 10, 2005 16:34author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Despite the early start and the remoteness of the location, there was a good showing at this morning's protest, over 60 people at one stage from what I counted.
Police presence was medium,if unmannerly but the event passed off peacefully.
There was a really diverse mix of people there...Sinn Fein,SP,SWP,Anarchists and many other "Non-aligned" folk both young and old.
The event wqas more of a picket than a blockade as had been advertised despite several individuals attempting to block the entrance and exit of three or four TopOil trucks and other Oil tankers.
These individuals were disposed of physically by the Gardai and there were very minor exchanges.
The event as a whole was a success despite the fact that it wasnt actually a blockade in the slightest and all are looking now to the Nowegian Embassy on Monday, the Oct 1 Rally and the Oct 2nd concert fundraiser.
Justice for the 5!
No prisoners for profit!

Very encouraging that up to 60 people would get up on a grey Saturday morning and head way down into the docks to protest at Statoil's involvement in the imprisonment of the Rossport 5 and the theft of our off shore resources.

I hope he didn't tape over his young fella's communion.

He had us all fooled though when he changed his hi-vis vest (he had a different one for each side of the road). This is a cunning trick which gives the impresion that there are more of them than there actually are.

He wouldn't give his name or his number but was on first name terms with two of the uniformed gardaí.

Why is such a protest considered worthy of recording by these guys? Several people there either had never been on a demo before, or hadn't been on one for years. Is this supposed to intimidate them from going on another one?

Why do you have huge suspicions over this guy taping you, when you thought it necessary to bring a camera and photo him? Methinks you guys have just too many conspiracy theories

author by Tadhg - ShelltoSeapublication date Wed Sep 14, 2005 10:53author address author phone Report this post to the editors

The question was: Why is such a demonstration worthy of taping by the Gardaí?

I know some people have made smart comments, but seriously:
Does anyone have an answer?

author by localpublication date Wed Sep 14, 2005 16:33author address author phone Report this post to the editors

whats the big deal about some guy taping the demonstrators? who the hell cares. he has as much right as those who are sending in pictures of the Erris beaches! etc. actually from what i can see , he was in his place of work, (nice to see some people still working!) we had to put up with people sticking cameras in our faces at an open meeting about 3 years ago by a certain woman who adores being in the media spotlight herself .so cop on and give your protest a rest ,most of us here in Erris dont really give a damn!

Well, to "local", I think it is very nice for you that you can afford the luxury of not giving a damn about this. It is clear that neither your life nor your livelihood is immediately threatened by this pipeline, and that you don't live near it either. Thanks for the neighbourly support. Don't expect help from people if you ever get into a spot of bother.

no actually it doesnt interfere with my work at all, except that in todays world some of us cant afford the luxury of walking around a suspended workplace all day, drinking tea and waiting for the next journalist to come and have a look. and yes i live right beside the proposed pipeline!!!!
