Hi Resolution Pics Of Rossport 5 Protest at Department of (Ill) Communication

category national | rights, freedoms and repression | news report author Friday August 12, 2005 03:35author by roisin + various Report this post to the editors

demo_longweb.jpg

About 100 people protested at the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, in Dublin, this evening (August 11th) to protest Dempsey's cringing connivance with Shell in carrying out illegal works at Rossport, and his refusal to guard the interests of the Irish people in the exploration of the gas at Corrib. Minister Dempsey has repeatedly refused to talk directly with the Shell to Sea Campaign and their demand to have gas processed at Sea. He has allowed the Rossport 5, now in their 6th week in jail, to be imprisoned on foot of an illegal injunction given to Shell on April 4th.

We were well pleased about 60 or so I think - further action is planned both in Dublin and Trim on Dempsey.

Also theres a public meeting on Wednesday August 24th in the ATGWU in Abbey Street at 7.30 with Fintan O Toole and family members - I'll get the details up on the events shortly.

Hey, few questions about shell for anarchists (or libcoms..), not out of malice, just curiousity..

1. Are you campaigning for Shell to go to sea, for shell to leave Ireland or against the injustice of people being imprisoned. (all 3 perhaps)?

2. Do you think that getting involved in a campaign with the SWP again will actually lead to anything good?

3. How does "shelltosea" relate to or help advance anarchist struggle within Ireland?

thanx - solidarity

Why are Labour on those demos? They were in government from 1992-1997. Did they renationalise the gas reserves and tear up the contract with Shell? No they did not. Are they saying they will nationalise the reserves if elected at next election, no they are not! In fat they would prefer to go into coalition with the most pro-shell party in the country Fine Gael. They will go into the Dail and elect Enda Kenny who has condemned the Shell prisoners as criminals. Labour stop abusing this issue to try to steal a couple of votes, you have sold out years ago.

As for SF, they are also a party of business, their crimes are well known by regular readers of this site. Coalition with FF in Tralee, Bin Tax in Sligo, Privatisation and cut backs in the North... SF also take huge sums off money from companies like Shell. Also look at members such as Phil Flynn, he was a right wing union bureacrat and a Director of Bank of Scotland, the ICC and was heading up the unpopular decentralisation policy. This is the true face of Sinn Fein, they are a sell out pro business party that are itching to go into bed with FF. They will sell out the people of Mayo if it means getting a Merc.

but its not about shell being allowed to take the gas but the type of pipeline used near homes in the area. "shell to sea" just means refine the gas at sea. these plans were not drawn up when labour or anyother rainbow partner were in power so they can object now with no conflect on past policy. the ross. 5 and supporters dont care who takes the gas just HOW its taken.

Cop on "SF watch" - if you want proper answers give a proper name. Cowardly stuff yet again, and I'd hazard a decent guess at your real identity.

Because he shows no evidence of it. We've now had 4 years of repetition of EXACTLY THE SAME point without any new arguments every bloody time that the LP or SF are mentioned on this site.

Don't you realise that such sloganeering only makes them look good and the left look stupid?

Anarchists were involved for some months before the jailing so obviously the issue for anarchists is wider that the jailings. In terms of the WSM we've also identiifed the whole issue of the fact that the deal Shell has means that very little tax (and no royalities) will be collected from Shell. This has implications for everything from the health service to the bin and water tax as the excuse always used is that no alternative sources of income exist.

This is not just important in itself but as an illustration of what Dail democracy is really about - all power to the corporations. Issues of 'corrupation' aka 'business as usual' are also exposed here. So there are plenty to start with - other anarchists would probably give you others.

The issue of working with the SWP is a red herring as ShelltoSea is not a creation of the SWP. So unless your making the suicidal suggestion that anarchists should walk out of anything the SWP gets involved in this isn't important. Anarchists should be involved in broad struggles where we can even if often due to lack of democracy or willingness to take required actions we'll end up in narrower network (as happened around Mayday 2004 and the anti-war movement),

As to 'building anarchism' - we've always seen an honest involvement in grassroots campaigns as one of the best ways to get people in struggle to take a serious look at anarchism as an organisational method and way of looking at the world. That aside our involvement in struggles is based on them being worth fighting for in themselves - we are not interested in making no gains until the 'glorious day'.

Anyway its hardly a tough choice when you have a global corporation and the Irish state conspiring to put 5 pensioners in jail for standing up for their community.

If this person is genuine (and I actually fear that he is) he needs a swift running kick up the arse.

Ironically the party whose jargon he espouses (the SP) have contributed very little to the campaign in comparision with members of the two organisations he slags off, anarchists and SWP.
