Will we find Enda?

category mayo | rights, freedoms and repression | news report author Friday August 05, 2005 13:24author by Áine Ní Sheighin Report this post to the editors

A Delegation from Erris is on its way to Castlebar to go to Enda Kennys Office. There are not many going as most of the families are in Cloverhill Prison today visiting the Rossport Five. Caitlín Uí Sheighin and Ed Moran are going to see Enda and when I get information on what happened next I will let you all know.

I know he was on holidays for a few weeks but he is the leader of a 'government in waiting' (apparently..) and his silence has been shocking. Well, not really....

I think his brother made up for him when he prevented Mayo Co. Co. from supporting the Shell to Sea campaign.

Enda has managed to make one bitty statement - see http://www.online.ie/news/viewer.adp?article=3263127

Henry Kenny more than made up for Enda being on holiday. It now seems it will take AT LEAST 3 weeks before an emergency meeting will take place. What are the council at? Galway County Council, Louth County Council, Dublin City South Council, Údarás na Gaeltachta, ICSA, ICMSA etc etc. The list of councils and organisations that have officially taken on Shell to Sea and support the Rossport 5 goes on and on and on, Thank God. What are the Mayo councillers afraid of? Enda? I should hope not. He is not exactly very scary now is he?

I am looking forward to finding out what happens with him today. Will we be suprised at anything he says? I wont hold my breath.

Enda has to stay out of the public eye on this because being part of the neo-liberal capitalist order (just like FF but slightly different), he agrees with and supports Shell / Statoil

However he has to pretend he is for the people of Mayo, which would mean being against Shell. If he were to actually come out in favour of the people and thus easily get elected, the powers that be could not trust him to have the reigns of power, since it is all about keeping up the facade and at the same time gutting the welfare state, our freedoms, rights and protections and making it easy for corporations to exploit us and the country.

Now Enda also has to be worried that this issue doesn't get any bigger, otherwise his silence will become apparent, so the bigger it gets the worse it is for him and there may even be a real chance that the leader of the opposition will NOT get elected next time.

Thus from his point of view, this issue needs to go away really quickly and when asked for his view, he has to say the minimum and seem reasonable and even pretend to be a little uninformed too.

If the spotlight is put on Enda, then this will be a good move, but to some extent it will suit Fianna Fail just fine. It just goes to show that the political party system stinks and you cannot win with it since practically all horses in the parliamentary route are owned by their corporate handlers.

Thursday 4th August 2005

Fine Gael Leader Enda Kenny TD has welcomed tonight’s announcement by Shell that it has deferred the development of the offshore phase of its Corrib Gas project until next year.

“Tonight’s announcement is a positive initiative by the company which should help to ease tensions and create space in which a rational debate on the safety aspects of the project can progress. It will also allow the independent safety review, which was first proposed by Fine Gael, to proceed in an atmosphere in which all major works on the project have been effectively halted.

“I would urge the Rossport residents still held in Clover Hill Prison to reflect very seriously on this development and on whether they can most effectively contribute to the very important safety debate by returning to their community and families.”

Enda may be pleased with the developments but as yet it is not possible for the Rossport 5 to purge their contempt as long as the injunction stands. It seems that Shell can waive the injunction - not sure about the legal lingo but effectively they can take it away - but will not.

As it stands, if the men purge it means giving an undertaking that they will not, at any time in the future, use any peaceful means to protect their communities if it means obstucting Shell in any way. They CAN NOT give that undertaking.

They are more than willing to apologise to the courts, but will not give up their right to protect themselves, their families and their communities.

Shell have the power to have the men released but will not use it. They are cowards!!

Well if its not Irish or French its waffle that has to be translated

What Kenny meant was
"Please leave jail 5 men, so that this story fades in the media and we can have cups of tea and bikkies and nice polite chat while Shell get away with anything they want because when you leave jail, 5 men, the media and the public mind will no longer be thinking of you. How dare you steal the limelight for so long and how dare you stand up to a big rich powerful corporation - who do you think you are? not even I the great dignified Enda would dare do such a thing. Goodbye now, Im off to polish my cufflink collection and comb my hair; being a pretty politician is a fulltime job but I have to make up for the fact that I have no opinions by looking sexy"
