A letter from Norway: A Call to Reveal Antisemitism in Norway

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Monday June 24, 2002 19:09author by Sean Mccarthy Report this post to the editors

The Norwegian press is mobilizing against Jews in a horrifying way. The same antisemitic arguments used 50 years ago are used now against Israel, i.e. Jews. Pro-Israeli articles are not published in newspapers. Pro-Israeli facts are not subject for radio and TV. Almost every single day Norwegians TV and other media attack Israel. If they don't find strong enough arguments, stronger interviews are imported from international sources, as long as they blame the Jews.

My wife and I are Israeli Jews living in Norway in the last years. I am a biologist and web designer and my wife is a chemist researcher. We established an organization that balances the media war against Israel. There are Christians and Jews all working together, supported by about 30 organizations.

During the Holocaust it was Norwegian people who collected the Jews and sent them to Auschwitz, not Germans. The Jews here remember it and are frightened, so many don't support Israel from fear of being identified.

Attacks on Jews occurred, even if not to the extent of physical violence as known in central Europe.

Emails with antisemitic stereotypes are every day "pleasure". Last time I got an antisemitic telephone call was yesterday. A man called and told me that the terrible things that happen "down there" are because Jews continue to behave violently and crude, continuing their way as described in the Bible: people who abandon The Lords ways and every short period do crimes against The Lord and humanity. The reason why we all suffer there, he said, is because we killed Jesus and never accepted him as Messiah. He explained that it is natural that we now "kill Palestinian children and steal their land" .

The ideas are old and Norwegian media use the same arguments.

The mobilization of the main (governmental) Norwegian TV and radio channel, NRK, is well documented by the editor of the excellent Norwegian newspaper Dagen, Odd Sverre Hove. We can soon publish a translation to English of this three month work beginning from September 2000. He investigated every day media bias and published the report. However, Norwegian media, not only NRK, refuses to discuss any criticism of itself. Therefore, Israel is under a growing danger of isolation also by Norway and Jews are exposed to growing hatred.

Opposing the crimes committed on the West Bank and Gaza does not repeat not equal anti semitism.
The campaign of genocide directed against the Jewish people in Europe during world war 2 was a crime that must be condemned and never forgotten.
The attacks directed against the Palestinian people must also be condemned, three children were murdered in Jenin last week while buying food. That's just as appalling as the abduction and murder of the Jewish children from the home in Izieu by Barbie during WW2. The crimes of the Zionists can be compared in character, if not in scale to those of the Nazis.

wow, it sounds like the exact opposite over here. american papers and news programs are plastered with pictures of grieving israelis and destruction done by palestinian bombers. never a grieving palestinian mother. we know the exact death tole of israelis by the hands of palestinians, but really can not get any straight stats on how many innocent palestinians have been killed by israeli incursions. and hey, don't worry about another holocaust type situation these days because my government would never let it happen again. israel is the police of the middle east for us. we have alot invested in them. so really they can do whatever they want, and are.
its called apartheid. plain and simple. the world boycotted south africa when apartheid was in place there- and it should'nt be different for the israelis. i absolutely do not condone killing of innocent people. but to me- every action has a reaction. evil is born of evil.

Let me express a few points in an effort to put your tortured, paranoid mind to rest:

1. No national european press is mobilizing or otherwise conspiring against 'Jews'. This accusation is simply hysterical bullshit!!

2. Israel is not Jews, and vice versa.

3. Reporting the facts accurately from Israel/Palestina does not constitute an attack on anyone.

4. It these facts reflect on Israel in such a way as to make it appear a lawless State of Fascism, then that is the fault of the State which produces those actions/facts, not the newspapers reporting it. Perhaps the people running that country would care to read up on something called "International Law", and practise it for a change - then the press coverage might improve!

5. No rational person 'blames the Jews' - the religion of the perpetrators of a crime is irrelevant - just as no-one blamed the Christians for the destruction of Vietnam by the criminal US Governments of the day.

6. No one is really interested in your wife's or your own job descriptions. You should tell us the name of your organisation instead. Or any of the other 30.

7. Your use of the word 'Holocaust' infringes upon the trademarked terminology of the ADL and thus you now owe them your house. Apart from that, this wild hyperbole has absolutely no relevance to modernity.

8. Did it ever occur to you that there might be jewish people in the world who not only do not support the criminal actions of the Israeli State, not out of fear but rather respect for law - who even go so far as to oppose the very basis upon which that State is founded, i.e. the politico-religious philosophy of Zionism? Try this link for starters: http://www.jewsnotzionists.org

9. To claim that the norwegian media use or even repeat anything even remotely resembling the 'ideas' you implant in your caller is insulting and pathetic, and basically just demonstrates how far removed your psyche is from a grip on reality. Please demonstrate where I am wrong!

10. Jews are not exposed to growing or indeed any hatred - what is growing, however, is a will to oppose the reckless criminality and warmongering of the Sharonist Junta - and you would be shocked to know how many Jews are also feeling this way!!

Valium has been known to help persons like yourself. Good luck with your head.

What is happening on the West Bank and Gaza is appalling and must be condemned. I fully support the right of the Palestinian people to their own state. Who the President of that state is, is a matter for the Palestinian people and nobody eles. However I have to disagree with "black pope" to the extent that Jewish people were and have been the victims of racism. The holocaust is an obvious example, there are still many anti semitic groups active in Europe and the U.S.

Dear Oliver,

I think anyone who was awake at all during the 20th century would agree that european Jews were very much the victims of an extreme form of religious discrimination and persecution.

(Incidentally, several other groups were also severely persecuted by Hitler's State - Communists, Gypsies, Jehovah's Witnesses, the handicapped, homosexuals etc.)

However, that is a past very much removed from the present reality - where this kind of thing, at least in Europe and N. America, is quite simply unimaginable. So the emphasis is very much on the word 'were'.

What the hysterical ranting of the above 'Mr. McCarthy' tries to implicate, is that this persecution of Jews is all about to be repeated.

I have a more than fleeting suspicion that this whipping-up of emotional associations and aged guilt-complexes is a concerted campaign driven by an ulterior motive - to dampen european protests against the criminal actions of the Sharonist Junta.

As good a remedy as any to such propaganda outbursts is a reading of the book "The Holocaust Industry" by Norman Finkelstein.

I really do believe that the Holocaust, the campaign of genocide directed against the Jewish communites in Europe during World War 2 was one of the most appalling crimes in the history of our world. It must never be forgotten. I am also aware of the crimes of the german fascists directed against the Roma and people who were mentally and/or physically handicapped. I don't need a history lesson from anyone.

I support the right of the Palestinian people to a state of their own, remembering and respecting the memory of the millions of Jewish people murdered by the german fascists and supporting the rights of the Palestinian people are not mutally exclusive.

I am opposed to the memory of those innocent people being used to justify the activities of the Sharon government. The people murdered in Sabra-Shatila and Jenin must also be remembered, the best tribute we can pay to them is to do all we possibily can to bring forward the day when the Palestinian people have their own state and Capital, East Jerusalem.

Shalom

Mr Pope!!!!

I think we are both preaching to the converted here - namely ourselves.

What I just wanted to point out is the importance of disassembling statements like the one made above by Mr.McCarthy, since they can be a hindrance to effective efforts towards the goals you outlined.
