Pics of pro-Rossport demo in Dublin (& pro-capitalist counter-demo!)

Capitalist counter-demo causes confusion

Several thousand people gathered at Parnell Square, Dublin on Saturday for a rally in support of the Rossport Five and of the Shell to Sea Campaign. Some protestors were confused by a small capitalist bloc, which called for "Free trade not free farmers!"

The crowd included many from North Mayo, who had come up by bus. Quite a number of TDs were present, including Jerry Crowley (Ind) from Mayo, Joe Higgins (Socialist Party), Tommy Broughan (Lab) and several Greens, including Trevor Sargent, John Gormley and Trevor Sargent. Sinn Féin's Gerry Adams and Mitchell McLaughlin were also in attendance.

As mentioned on an earlier post, the plan to finish up at the Norwegian embassy was mysteriously switched for a traditional speeches-at-the-GPO affair. There were about 29 speeches. At least that's how it seemed.

The only incident that threatened to cause trouble was a pro-capitalism counter-rally staged by four capitalists (see photo below). They jeered at the protestors, shouting: "We have the police! We have the police!" Nearby police were not amused.

The capitalists carried placards bearing slogans such as: "More money for less people"; "What about our jeeps?"; "You should be shopping!"'; "More cars less trees!"; "We hate hippies!" and "Free trade not free farmers!".

However, a top-level source told Indymedia she believed the "capitalists" were in fact anti-capitalists on a covert operation. The "capitalists" refused to speak to Indymedia, saying "We only talk to corporate media. Get a real job!"

Ed Moran is never quiet by the way, its just not in his nature - I think he is too pissed off, like many from Mayo

Great demo, great speakers, great crowd - if only those 4 capitalists didnt turn up, they ruined everything!!

I hope their jeeps were clamped!

Labour should have been ashamed of themselves. Rabbitte is now calling for a compromise with Shell. Labour were rightly booed. They should never have been invited.

Lyrics to the song that noted folksinger, John Hoban sang yesterday at the Dublin Rossport Five demo.

TREASON

Come gather 'round friends, I'll tell you a hell of a tale
As old as the hills; as hard as a piece of bog dale
5 innocent men lie in Cloverhill prison today
Injustice, treason, Shell oil, the Corporate way.

We all know your history in Nigeria
New Mexico, Russia and venues all over the world
Here in Mayo the sun sets in Broadhaven Bay
Never, go deo, will you win with your Corporate way

CHORUS
Send Shell to Sea/Safety not Profit
Justice Now for the Rossport Five

To Michael O' Seighin, Brendan Philbin too
Vincent and Philip McGrath, our prayers are with you
To Willie Corduff, the wives and children also
We praise you and stand beside you here in Mayo

Shell oil, a mhaicin, we're keeping this garden fair
For seven generations ahead, to live in and share
What is rightfully theirs, a gift from the Creator on high
Beir bua for Davitt, for Daly and the Rossport 5

CHORUS

John

It should be very clear to everybody that Ireland is being sold off to the highest bidder.
They changed the planning regulations to make IKEA happy, turned Shannon into a part of the US war supply chain.
What little independence we have left was negotiated away during discussions on the EUROPEAN CONSTITUTION.
Surrendering our natural resources is just part of the global plan.
The only defence we have against the power establishment is people power.
It was good to see so many out to protest on Saturday.

Wasn't it great to see Gerry Adams aligning himself to the R5 and hijacking another protest. Surely to God, knee capping and punishment beatings are more harmful than an oil platform.
