Galway : Rossport Five case highlighted at the Connacht football final.

category galway | rights, freedoms and repression | news report author Sunday July 10, 2005 21:33author by Dunlo Tom - Shell to Sea Report this post to the editors

Shell to Sea & Sinn Fein activists do their duty.

Today, at the football final between Galway and Mayo, some 30 activists from Sinn Fein and the Shell to Sea campaign highlighted the injustice that was visited on the Rossport Five and, in their ongoing struggle with Shell Oil, the travails of the Erris community.

Sinn Fein manned information/petition tables at both entrances to Pearse stadium where some 3,000 signatures were garnered and Shell to Sea activists stuck to distributing information leaflets to the fans and during the course of the match, beneath the score board, at the opportune time , holding aloft large letters spelling 'Free the Rossport Five'.

Led by Galway City Councillor, Danny Callanan, Sinn Fein did exemplary work and impressed the Shell to Sea activists with their disclipine and sensitivity, as regards the hijacking of our campaign - Anna tells me they are holding another information/petition table for the Rossport Five in Shop Street, Galway this Wednesday, so, all activists are encouraged to join them then in solidarity?.

Led by the indefatigable Gerry Cowley. TD and Galway Shell to Sea head honcho, Padraig Cambell, the Shell to Sea activists were well pleased with the strong support that came our way from the fans. Judging from yesterdays Belmullet protest and todays activism there is still a huge unattenuated groundswell of outrage out there against the jailing of the five.
