The Getupstandup leafletting in Dundrum 'Town Centre' yesterday afternoon was again a successful event as almost 500 leaflets were distributed into the hands of shopworkers informing them of their rights and encouraging them to join a union. In two instances, however, shop managers reacted in a hostile manner.
In the East boutique on the ground floor, a manager grabbed the leaflet from the hands of a worker and threw it at the leafletter, called security and had the leafletter removed from the shopping centre.
In Finnegans coffee shop on the 3rd floor, a manager also reacted in a hostile manner and called security who asked the leafletter to leave.
The security staff themselves were very polite and supportive, explaining that they were members of SIPTU and had no problems with us handing out leaflets. But Dundrum 'Town Centre' isn't actually a town centre in the traditional sense. It's a place where you're only wanted if you've got money to spend!!
The really interesting question of course is what do the management of East boutique and Finnegans coffee shop have to hide. Why were they so afraid that their workers might receive some information about their entitlements? If you happen to be near Dundrum shopping centre in the next few days, why not call in to either or both of these shops and let the workers there have a copy of the leaflet - you can download it at http://www.ucdsu.net/attachments/may2005/leaflett.pdf
Information is power!!
