Can you give me a reference to this 'scientific research'? Which discipline did you publish in? Aeronautics? Astro-physics? Cosmology? Personally I reckon that it would be difficult for ye to get through the peer-review process in any field other than psychiatry - and that research would probably 'prove' something quite different to the above.

John, do you really give money to this snake-oil salesman? Is it possible that you could find a slightly less obvious shyster to follow? This dude is taking the piss and isn't even trying to sound plausible. I'll tell you what. I have a magic pair of underpants. If you send me enough money, they will eventually grow to such tremendous proportions that the entire world will be covered in their peaceful shade, wiping out wars, hunger and that sort of thing. Just wanted to point out that not a single one of the publications mentioned was either written by an independent researcher, or was published in a reputable scientific publication. In a day and age when computers can write scientific papers and have them accepted in cybernetics conferences (happened recently) and spoofs can get accepted (c.f. sokal), one would be very ill advised to give too much credence to random publications.

In addition to failing the independence test, all of the above publications merely show statistical correlations between essentially unmeasurable metrics. Of course it is easy to show significant statistical correlations between 'happiness' in an area and 'yogic flyers' in an area because happiness is impossible to measure objectively and thus it is simple for the researcher to pick metrics that will confirm their thesis. There is also no evidence at all that there is any such thing as yogic flying*. Therefore, as these papers are all focused on showing correlations between an unmeasurable metric and a non-existant population, they are all completely worthless.

In general, it has long been understood in science that statistical correlations without some plausible hypotethical causative interaction, are proof of nothing. These statistics, being based on subjective measurements of unmeasurable entitities, are completely worthless.

I should also add that most of them are from 'dissertations international' - which is just a collection of dissertations without any quality control whatsoever.

Come on Ray, are you really such a sucker that you'll give your money to somebody based on such flimsly evidence? What makes you so sure that the 99.99% of scientists who think it's complete codswallop are wrong and the maharashari are right? Why do you use these few quasi-scientific papers to bolster your claims and ignore the vast body of real scientific work that says that it is nonsense?

I'm not having a go at Raymond in particular, just treating him the same way as I would your average believer in nonsense (scientologists, sparts, etc...;-)

Effects of Group Practice of the Transcendental Meditation Program on Preventing Violent Crime in Washington, D.C.: Results of the National Demonstration Project, June--July 1993

Abstract
This paper reports the results of a prospective experiment in which a group of approximately 4,000 participants in the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi programs of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi assembled in Washington, D.C., from June 7 to July 30, 1993. It was hypothesized that levels of violent crime in the District of Columbia would fall substantially during the Demonstration Project, as a result of the group''s effect of increasing coherence and reducing stress in the collective consciousness of the District. A 27-member Project Review Board comprising independent scientists and leading citizens approved the research protocol and monitored the research process. Weekly crime data was derived from database records provided by the District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department (DCMPD), which are used in the FBI Uniform Crime Reports. Statistical analysis considered the effect of weather variables, daylight, historical crime trends and annual patterns in the District of Columbia, as well as trends in neighboring cities. Consistent with previous research, levels of homicides, rapes and assaults (HRA crimes) correlated with average weekly temperature. Robberies approximately followed an annually recurring cycle. Time series analysis of 1993 data, controlling for temperature, showed that HRA crimes dropped significantly during the Demonstration Project, corresponding with increases in the size of the group; the maximum decrease was 23.3% (p < 2 × 10–9) [24.6% using a longer baseline, with 1988--1993 data (p < 3 × 10–5)], coincident with the peak number of participants in the group during the final week of the assembly. When the same period in each of the five previous years was examined, no significant decreases in HRA crimes were found. Robberies did not decrease significantly. However, a model that jointly estimated the effect of the Demonstration Project on both HRA crimes and robberies showed a significant reduction in violent crimes overall of 15.6% (p = 0.0008). Further analysis showed that the effect of the coherence-creating group on reducing HRA crimes could not be accounted for by additional police staffing. The time series analysis for HRA crimes gave results that are highly robust to alternative model specifications, and showed that the effect of the group size was cumulative and persisted after the Demonstration Project ended. Also, calculation of the steady state gain based on the time series model predicted that a permanent group of 4,000 coherence-creating experts in the District would have a long-term effect of reducing HRA crimes by 48%.

Maharishi said the adopted nations will include both developed and developing countries. The nations will be announced to the world press in the next few days.

Maharishi said the Global Country of World Peace will focus much of its energy and resources to establish in each adopted country a group of Yogic Flyers to create coherence in collective consciousness—the basis of national invincibility. The size of the group—from a few hundred to a few
thousand experts—will depend upon the size of the population of the nation.

"The size of the group of Yogic Flyers may be small, but the intensified influence of coherence from the group in the whole national consciousness will be great—just as one small lamp spreads light and removes the darkness from a big hall," Maharishi said.

Global Country of World Peace will continue to adopt countries until every nation enjoys Heaven on Earth

Maharishi said he is establishing the groups now, on his own, because governments have been slow to adopt his program to raise every nation to invincibility. Maharishi also emphasised that the 20–30 adopted nations are just the first stage of his global peace plan. "The Global Country of World Peace will soon adopt more and more countries until every nation enjoys Heaven on Earth," Maharishi said.

Maharishi delivered his historic announcement during his February 15 global news conference—just a few weeks after he proclaimed to the world press that "the arrow has left the bow and will soon hit the target"—that his program is now under way to make every nation invincible and create permanent world peace. "A fortunate new destiny is dawning for mankind—peace and all good will prevail on earth," Maharishi said.

Coherence-creating groups to include Yogic Flyers and Vedic Pandits

In response to a press question, Maharishi said the coherence-creating group in each nation will include local experts who will be trained in Vedic technologies of consciousness, including the Transcendental Meditation program, its advanced techniques, and Yogic Flying. These experts will enliven Total Natural Law within their own self-referral Transcendental Consciousness and create coherence in the collective consciousness of the whole population.

The coherence-creating group will also include Vedic Pandits from India who are expert in Yogic Flying as well as in Yagya and Grahashanti—the Vedic science of sound that creates highly integrated national consciousness and prevents any negativity from coming back to the nation due to its wrong past actions.

The influence of Vedic words is not limited to time and space

"Vedic sounds are the reverberations of the Unified Field—the Constitution of the Universe—which administers the universe with perfect order," Maharishi said. "These sounds are the words or ‘structuring dynamics’—of this transcendental field of life. The influence of Vedic words is not

Maharishi said the Vedic Pandits will utilise this "miraculous" ability of Vedic words—along with Yogic Flying—to quickly create an intensified influence of coherence in national and world consciousness.

"The time of talking about peace will be less and less—while the effect we produce in the world will be greater and greater"

Maharishi concluded his global news conference by offering profound gratitude to the tradition of Vedic masters for the gift of Vedic knowledge that is transforming the world. "Vedic science is that vast and supreme field of knowledge that can raise every individual to enlightenment, raise every nation to invincibility, and create permanent world peace. It has come to us through the blessings of our tradition of Vedic masters. For 50 years we have been talking about creating peace.
