The Taoiseach: I recall what the Opposition said when two years ago a community garda in this city stood up to deal with the unfair elements. I answered in this House for that garda, who tried to clear out a few hooligans and vandals from the May Day celebrations. I was trying to defend the poor man. The Labour Party talks about community gardaí but give no support to community policing. |

Jump To Comment: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9THE issue of hooliganism and anti-social behaviour will not be tackled if young people do not get "a bit of a rough time" from police, the Taoiseach admitted yesterday.
Calling for support for tough new measures and curfews to be introduced in the Criminal Justice Bill, Mr Ahern said he knew parents would be down to his office and the office of other TDs complaining about the treatment of young people by gardai.
"Parents do so now and say their Johnny is getting a rough time from the police," added Mr Ahern.
"However, the reality is that if young people do not get a bit of a rough time from the police, we will never address these issues."
Just shows you, underneath the facade Bertie is just a thug at heart. I hope he is not intending to resurrect the Garda Heavy Gang.
One of the last of the cop trials is on at the moment in the Circuit Court, Fergal Leddy was up giving evidence again the other day, being cross-examined about the fiesta with the flare in it.
perhaps the police intend to come down heavy on this years reclaim the streets on mayday?
This is what is referred to in non pc non IT lingo as a veiled threat.

W. I cant see how Bertie saying something pig ignorant and trying to piss people off is an indication that the boys in blue will be heavy handed. They know it's peaceful and usually keep their distance. Nothing to worry about.
its worth paying attention to the man's language. When we protest against the support of the state for an illegal war, we are 'thugs', when we criticise the social, environmental, personal etc destruction that is done by socio-economic policies, we are 'hooligans'. The taoiseach's use of language makes us into a threat of violence and portrays as intending only meaningless destruction. By doing this, our coherent agenda and criticisms are ignored, and any violence that occurs is justified, as protecting citizens from us crazy hoodlums.
bertie gave the nod to vigilante-type behaviour in the 90s as regards dealin with the 'drugs problem' . Then, ppl died after being attacked.
Bertie is giving the green light to vigilantees . Next time I see some kids up to a bit of vandalism ,I'll go over with a couple of my pals and rough them up a little with batons . Bertie says it's ok , and if it's ok by Bertie it's ok by me.
