CorK Emergency

category cork | rights, freedoms and repression | news report author Sunday April 10, 2005 14:13author by Israel Finnerty - concerned citizenauthor email izzofinno at gmail dot comauthor address Corkauthor phone 086 1674627 Report this post to the editors

Lee Fields has been divided in two!

I DONT beleive what Ive just seen.
I was walking on my way to work this lovely Sunday morning along my usual route. When I arrived at Lee Fields I was shocked, horrified and appalled.
THEVE DIVIDED IT IN TWO.

If your familiar with CorK youll know the Kingsley hotel. Well theve recently built an extension on to it, closely overlooking Lee Fileds.

Now theyve constucted a barrier about 10 feet into Lee Fields cutting off the public walkway and hiding the river Lee right back up to the hydroelectectric dam yoke.

I could not believe what I was seeing. I jumped the gate cutting of my public right to walk on public land, and investigated. I found loads of timber and a JCB track on the grass.

Some of the railing had also been removed to allow an entrance way into the Kingsley.

WE cannot allow this to happen.

As a sign of protest i started banging a beat onto the timber sheeting thats blocking the river. Unfortunately I had to leave to get to work for 12. I fully intend to go back down for another beat after work finishes at 8. (Thats 8pm Sunday the 10th of April 2005)

If anyone cares to join me you are more than welcome.

Ill probably head down some evenings during the week to make some more noise. (You can get a fairly good sound out of those wooden panels)

My number is 086 1674627 if you need to ring me.

See you down there

Noticing and responding to the constant infringement of our lanscape and public space by "development" and "progress". Well done. I'll have a look next time i go by, maybe remove a panel or three. Incidentally I heard that there were some dodgy dealings in the Kingsley gaining possesion of that land in the first place. it used to be a public swimming pool. Oh for a community alert and awake enough to respond effectively to every case like this. Keep at it we'll beat em yet.

Ok so, the Lee Fields barricade is still up.

The planning permission decision is due tomorrow the 21st of April. Im hoping that with the few complaints they received they'll tell the Kingsley to rip it down.

However a back up plan is also handy. Seeing as its public property we could take down the barrier and walk around the land that used to belong to the people of Cork.

If anyone is interested in lending a hand my email address is above.

I wonder if Karma had anything to do with the Kingsley being closed for so long.

You could say that they took the land away from nature as well as the people of Cork.

The people of Cork did very little. Nature did quite a bit.

Is that what you get for greed?

It's what you get when you permit an underground car park to be build next to a major river and across the road from the HQ of Cork Co. Council. Insurance won't ever cover it again. Hotel should never have been permitted there.
A five-year old wouldn't do it!! And the Glucksman(UCC) stored it's art undergound, next to a river. Ireland is rearing them!!
Any updates on the UCC V ESB courtcase??
