ANNE HARRIS / SINDO

AN Irish solution to an Irish problem is how the public wants to deal with the issues raised by recent deportations of immigrants.

Despite the emotional scenes following the dramatic return of Olunkunle Eluhanla to Dublin, and the highly charged attempted deportation of immigrant families in Athlone and Cavan, it appears we do not wish to amend recently passed legislation affecting the citizenship rights of immigrants.

Today's opinion poll shows an electorate evenly divided on whether the legislation should be re-examined.

Of those questioned, 45 per cent said the legislation, which came about as a result of the citizenship referendum, should be re-examined, while 46 per cent said it should not.

Despite this, a substantial majority of 61 per cent felt that the personal circumstances of all immigrants - even individuals who have been refused asylum status in this country - should be taken into account before applying deportation orders.

Less than a third of those polled, just 30 per cent, said personal circumstances were not relevant.

A massive 74 per cent of those questioned said that, given the current delays in processing legal paperwork, asylum seekers should be allowed to work to support themselves. The clear implication here is that asylum seekers should not be a drain on public finances.
