2005 Street Party
On Monday, May 2nd, starting from the Spike on O’Connell Street at 1.30pm, Reclaim The Streets and Dissent! Ireland, along with Critical Mass will be holding a free street party to help highlight the effects that the G8 leaders have on the world, and to help people mobolise to take action and travel to this years G8 Summit at Gleneagles, Scotland on July 6th.
The G8 means group of eight nations and it is simply that, an exclusive grouping of the political leaders of eight specific countries. It is not an institution, it has no constitution or charter, and it has no permanent secretariat or headquarters. These are of course the world's most industrialised, wealthy and powerful States.
The membership of the G8 has evolved over time to include the US, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, Canada and the president of the European Union. The scope of the topics of discussion have also evolved from the first, supposedly one -off meeting that focussed on macro-economic policy. Now issues of security, trade, relations with developing countries and other trans-national issues and even domestic issues, such as employment have been discussed.
It is important to be clear that the G8 Summits are not a policy-making forum. They are a time for the leaders of these states to network and build relationships. They are a time to discuss complex international issues and crises, to allow for a more powerful collective response.
The co-ordination of these nations and their unequal influence over international institutions such as the WTO, IMF and G20 ensures that their interests dominate the world order.
So come along to this years Reclaim The Streets party!
What will be provided: sound system & reclaimed city space.
What to bring: friends, family, pets, musical instruments, banners, footballs, juggling balls, face paint, puppets, skipping ropes, paint, bikes, chalk, flags, whistles, skateboards, food, enthusiasm and anything else to help make it a fun day out.
What not to bring: prices. No selling of items please.
Remember. Like all RTS parties, this is YOUR party. It is what you make it.
Meet at 1.30pm at the Spike on Monday, May 2nd.
Critical Mass meet at 1pm at Garden of Remembrance.

Although obviously there's not quite the same incentive to mobilize as there was for last years Mayday events (centered around the EU meeting) I hope there still manages to be as large a turnout...if not larger! Please post as much info as possible on how people can help to advertise this great event. See you all there!
What is critical mass I'm sorta new to this?
"What is critical mass I'm sorta new to this?"
When a priest dies doing his daily duty!
before the partay dontcha know
on moving bicycles
No, a critical mass is when you are read from the pulpit. Don't yiz know anything about Irish social history?
this website has a lot of the answers:
http://www.critical-mass.org/
Critical Mass is a group with no clear leaders, and is organised much like the anarchist movement with 'affinity groups' and whatnot. It is centered primarily around cycling and most protestors ride bikes although other modes of transportation (except for cars!!) are always welcome :)
critical mass is an anti-car bike/skateboard/rollerblade/pogo stick/walk, whatever once it doesnt have a petrol engine.
it has traditionally been used by RTS Dublin to help blockade the area in which the street party will be happening.
click on the link to see some pics from previous critical masses
Critical Mass is a party on wheels! Same deal as Reclaim the Streets sorta, what with the reclaiming of streets, except it has a real transport focus. The group get around on bikes or skaties or blades or whatever (i've seen an awesome PA on the back of a four bike tandem before) and stop traffic and also blow bubbles or play trumpets. it's kind of up to you. Critical mass happens all over the world on the last friday of the month (Melbourne, Australia and San Frasisco in the Uniformed States of Denial are the best for me so far) so that's that. Reclaim the Streets and Critical Mass are friends. Does any one else have anything to say about it.....?
In such ugly time protest is beautiful
I plan to bring along a fantastically large bucket full of H2whoa and washing up liquid goodness... anyone with a spare tennis racket or something with a hole in the middle (use your imagination) is cordially invited for a dip on the day to get your bubbles on : )
Will Donal Corcoran be there?
would be pretty funny if he was.
I know it's a bit late for this year but would it be possible to hold the reclaim the streets party on the Saturday when there are more people in town? It'll also avoid going into work on tuesday with an awful hangover. I Know the hangover can be dealt with but try organising four hundred kids and teaching them English Literature with it. Grand for college students who grow up and leave the spirit of dissent behind them but for those of us who choose a career that allows us to continue to dissent and question it is hard to do so when not in the full of your health. Besides that, have fun and hope to see you all there.

Out now: "Quite Enough of that Nonsense"
Critical Mass exists in cities all over the world, usually gathering once a month in a predetermined location with bicycles, skateboards, prams, etc. or on foot to reclaim the streets from automobiles. Typically, a "critical mass" of bicyclists and pedestrians will make their way on an impromptu route through the city's streets--a refreshing and friendly turn-about of "business as usual" when bicyclists and pedestrians in fear for their lives must give way to automobiles. The hope is, among other things, that motorists and onlookers will start to rethink the huge negative impact automobiles exact on our everyday life and culture.
What up g`s been to loads of protests before but this is my first reclaim the streets , cant wait. Looking forward to dipping into those bubbles!
Also If you see anyone with with a `thank you for POT smoking` sign (cheesy, i know), thats me and you`re welcome to join me for a smoke or whatever.
See you all tomorrow
RTS came out of the anti-roads movement in England. RTS was an attempt to raise issues about car-centric transport and its ecological effects in our society.
These issues are huge in Ireland see Tara, see the crap public transport on offer, see the hi-risk activity of cycling, see the smog.
Don't forget the politics at the party....or the wood for the trees etc etc
There are some background articles on RTS written by WSM members at http://www.struggle.ws/wsm/rts.html
Garda say that riot squad has been mobilised. They don't want a repeat of Dame St. 2002. Special Operations have been deployed to Sligo for the funeral of the professional hit on Friday.
RTS say they want a family friendly day, a celebration against capitalism..
....according to 11am radio report
a wet day but there were about 500+ down outside Liberty Hall bopping away to top tunes, very nice atmosphere despite the weather. the gardaí were keeping a strong enough presence at the edges and were checking peoples bags for booze, there were reports of them not letting people into the RTS. Food not bombs gave out some grub, James Connelly was hooded in black block style, various bike and trailor systems were turned into mobile music stations and the bus stop was turned into centre stage with it becoming the main dj zone.
flyers for DISSENT against G8 this summer were being handed out, flyers for gig later on were being given out.
