Do not be silenced by terror. Join thousands meeting across the world on March 11.

Meet on March 11
Make a Difference

On March 11 2004 ten bombs exploded on four commuter trains in Madrid, killing 191 and injuring thousands. In the days that followed the world was inspired by the people of Spain, as millions took to the streets, refusing to be silenced by terror.

A year on, it is not just the people of Spain who are gathering.

Thousands across the world, from the Ivory Coast to Ireland, India to Iran, are Meeting on March 11.

Join them!

Take time out on March 11,
Sit down with friends, colleagues, family.
Eat lunch, and while you do,
Remember all victims of terrorism
But don't just remember, reflect on what can be done.

After your meeting, make your thoughts count by taking a few minutes to share your ideas and conclusions, with us and the rest of the world.
That way we can let the political leaders know what the people think.
Find out how at http://meetings.safe-democracy.org/

You can also make a difference by sending this message on to your friends and colleagues.

Madrid remembered by ringing the bells of all the churches at the time of the first bomb.

Starting now, (12h00 CET) all train services on RENFE the peninsular service will stop for five minutes.

Respect - Silence - Serenity.

for the dead and thousands of wounded.
Meanwhile a conference on security, democracy and terrorism has ended in Madrid with the UN sec. general joining President Zapatero's call for an "alliance of civilisations" and the King's call for "dialogue, concensus and peace".

This is not a moment for politics.
It is a moment for respect.

They were on their way to or from work, lowly paid work. Many north african migrants are included in the long list of thousands maimed, and last night in Madrid took part in silent respectful commemoration of the victims.
the newly arrived immigrant community of Spain is one of the largest of any European state, and the process of granting them "their papers" has been slow. The "amnesty" offered by the government elected by Spanish citizens since last year's bombings has not been met with beurocratic efficiency, and so accordingly migrants of the "sin papales" movement are again engaging in high profile "lock in" protests in Bcn tonight. The last time they did so was during the week of the feast of the Trinity in the Cathedral and Church of Maria del Pi 2004 when the cardinal asked the police to beat them out, so morning mass could be said.

a representative body for muslims and mosques in the Spanish State has issued a "fatwa" or statement condeming "Al Qaeda" and its members and "leaders". The fatwa was timed to co-incide with the first anniversary of the M11 bombings.

: "Any group that invokes Islam to justify terrorist attacks places itself outside of Islam."

A representative group like this can't issue a fatwa - it can only be issued by a mufti, which is a religious leader of extremely high significance to muslims.

So Bin Laden and the rest won't exactly be shitting in their kaks....
