Let Foreign Students Keep their Right to Work

category national | racism & migration related issues | news report author Wednesday February 09, 2005 17:31author by Joe C - GRauthor email solidarityjoe at yahoo dot comauthor phone 087 9032281 Report this post to the editors

Protest: Saturday 3pm GPO

On April 18th 2005, new foreign students studying English in Ireland will no longer be able to work part time for 20 hours per week. Students already here before that date will only be allowed one more year. This will affect people from outside the European Union- Chinese, Asian, Russian, and Latin American students amongst others.

These students pay their tax and contribute to the building of the Irish economy. They often work the hardest and most lowly paid jobs. Many Irish friends believe they should be treated better, and that they should be allowed to keep their right to work. Otherwise, the only people who will be able to study in Ireland will be the very rich.

Please join the picket at the GPO this Saturday. Organise your school, workmates and friends to come. Make banners and placards- we will continue to meet every Saturday for an hour at the GPO to make sure our voice gets heard- there are over 50,000 students affected. If we organise more schools and students every week, the Irish government will have to listen to our voice.

BERTIE AHERN and Irish Education representatives recently travelled to China to make business
deals and encourage Chinese students to come and study here in Irish Universities. But just before Christmas the Minister for Justice, Michael McDowell removed the right to work for students from outside the European Economic Area who are attending part-time courses under one year duration.

This affects English Language courses. Thousands of students, particularly Chinese (who make up
almost 80% of students in these courses) will not be able to afford to do such courses if they cannot work. They will be forced to return home due to economic pressures. It also puts the jobs of up to 3,000
English Language teachers under threat.

The Chinese government issued a warning at the start of this month against students considering English language study in Ireland. Enterprise Ireland excluded representatives of the English Language sector from the education forum in China.

The Irish government instead wants to attract wealthy Chinese who will pay up to e20,000 in fees
to attend universities and thus be cash cows for the funding crisis in Irish universities.
Ahern expressed concerns about human rights in China yet here at home he is removing the right of
students to work and putting in danger the jobs of English Language teachers.

Students and teachers of all nationalities will unite and protest for the right to work on Saturday April 16th, two days before the decision is expected to be enforced. There will be a picket and organising stall every Saturday until then at the GPO from 3pm to 4pm.

Well done to the organisers of this demo.

I must admit I was surprised to see the pics, I didn't think GR could still bring people out. Especially since these pickets haven't been postered for or anything.

Then I looked at the bottom pic and realised that I was on that demo. It called by GR after a chinese bloke was killed when I was in fifth year, which was 3 years ago.

I don't mean to be cynical but, I think it's wrong to mis-use photos to give the impression of a demo being bigger than it actually is. Even if both demo's are to do with those people with chinese faces!!!!

The reality is that many English Language Chinese 'students' in this country are not genuine students. They have come here to work and the only way they can get visas is to come as students. In some cases unscrupulous school owners are charging them 'school fees' which are in effect charges for visas. In some cases these school owners are giving the 'students' letters (and probably charging them for them) saying that they have attended over 80% of their classes and on this basis can get a further six month visa extension. In some cases If classes do exist they can be of very dubious quality and students are crammed into unsuitable space. Students in class can be absolutely exhausted as few, if any, are working only the twenty hours that were previosly permitted. They work all hours round the clock.
I must stress that there are both genuine schools and genuine students running parallel with the cowboys.
If Ireland wants Chinese workers then work visas without any study component should be issued to Chinese nationals.
It is incorrect to say that English Language School owners were not included on the recent trade delegation to China.
Where did the writer get the figure of 3,000 English Language Teachers likely to lose their jobs?
The exploitation in this sector is two fold. English language teachers are extremely poorly paid, with few permanent jobs in this sector and maybe Joe C should take this up as an issue also.

Marie is right to point out some of the serious problems within the TEFL industry in this country.
I have worked for many reputable language schools but recently I came across a school trading as a 'medical college' claiming to be accredited by a major Irish university. This is not the case. They do however charge their students, who are mostly nurses, approx €7,000 - €10,000 per year upfront and have approx 100 students per year. At the end the students are set up as nursing assistants on very low pay in the UK working the old folk’s homes.
I have met many unhappy students from the establishment.

hey W,
Why not tell us more? Indymedia.ie is the perfect place to air this type of story and if this 'medical college' is doing what you say it is then you'll be helping prevent them exploit many more students.
If you don't want to do the story yourself mail me at the above address and I can take it to the editorial list, or send a post there yourself, just sign up here

As a over-sea student, i have experienced the work when i was in college!

i came to ireland through language school. i saw is that all the young chinese student's purpose to ireland is learn English, if processing well, they will go for higher education. that is no dault about it. so the language school part is more likely the section of trainform, and you can not expect a chinese students perform well in college, unless they have some idea about the English envionment. otherwise, if ireland not speaking English , they wounldnot be here. also i have to say only part of chinese students were doing which is your mentioned ( through student visa came to ireland and looking for work), the reason is that those young student were first time work in their life, they may never worked befor, when they got the little wage, the want spent what they want, they may good about it. like many young irish school leaver, i feel dispointed about them, they are missing themsleves, missing the dirction to the real chellenge.
