British DID gas POWs in Long Kesh

category national | crime and justice | news report author Friday January 28, 2005 11:45author by 30 Years Ago Report this post to the editors

30 years on and the truth finally comes out

Interesting story about how British repeatedly denied they used the gas Dibenzoxazepine (10 times stronger than tear gas) in Long Kesh in 1974.

(Posting it here as the original site containing the report is subscription based)

A former republican prisoner has vowed to fight for justice for his dead comrades after a new freedom of information act - which came into effect on January 1- revealed that the chemical CR Gas was employed by the British Army against republican prisoners in Long Kesh 30 years ago.

The dramatic breakthrough proves the British did inflict poison gas on both sentenced and interned prisoners after they burned the notorious Cages in protest at conditions in October 1974.

Over 50 former prisoners have either died prematurely through cancer or have been diagnosed with the disease possibly as a result of the choking poison that the British Army rained down on over 800 men.

As revealed by the Andersonstown News in several articles over the past five years, prisoners including internees, both republican and loyalists, as well as the British armed forces deploying the weapons, were exposed to their deadly toxins.

It will vindicate former POWs who have been fighting for several years for the British government to admit that they used CR Gas and it will severely embarrass the British government who denied the sinister attack ever took place.

Former POW Kevin Carson said it showed how the British engaged in chemical warfare against "defenceless" prisoners in Long Kesh and said it was particularly poignant that the news should break on the week of the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz where tens of thousands of men, women and children were gassed by the Nazis.

In 1998 John Spellar, minister for the British armed forces, in a written answer to Labour MP Ken Livingstone denied that CR Gas had ever been used 'operationally'.

Some time later former shadow Secretary of State for the North Kevin McNamara asked the same minister what quantity of CR gas was used on October 16 1974. Again Spellar denied it was used by significantly saying that "some 200 hand held spray devices containing 0.05 per cent CR were held at HM Prison Maze at the time".

But now the secret go-ahead to use the chemical weapons has been revealed in papers from 1976 that show that the use of CR or Dibenzoxazepine "10 times more powerful than tear gas" was allowed from 1973 to be released onto Long Kesh.

Documents show that the authorisation was so sensitive that officials involved in organisation training with the chemical were told: "All concerned should be told of the consequences of idle talk".

Kevin Carson described how the CR Gas fell on the prisoners, describing the attack as "hell on earth".

"These prisoners compared to any random group suffered a high percentage of premature deaths as a result of internal cancers," he said.

"The gas affected your sinuses and throat. That continued down the nose and throat with mucus. It was like you were drowning in your own mucus and your eyes filled up with water. The gas filled the whole football pitch in the jail in a dense fog. The bombs fragmented into smaller bomblets of gas leaving the dense effect on the ground. The result has been agonising diseases suffered by Irishmen at the behest of the British," he said.

The British did invent Concentration Camps so its hardly surprising that they should also gas inmates.

author by Barrypublication date Fri Jan 28, 2005 19:31author address author phone Report this post to the editors

A number of friends of mine were interned in the camp when this gas attack took place. They described it as absolutely horrific. Many had been subjected to CS gas for years, but the CR was, as has been described, hell on earth. To hear of the ensuing deaths is of no surprise to them at all.

I also have a friend from the Whiterock area who told me how Ballymurphy was gassed on a near weekly basis by the crown forces. There was no escape from it as it seeped into the houses. He has never smoked in his life, yet he developed asthma during this period.

Getting back to the camp gassing, an old friend of mine, a Dublin native and a fluent Gaelic speaker was tasked with keeping the brits out of the gate to the compound. He locked his arms around the gate and refused to let go. The brits beat him severely, set dogs on him and even fired a rubber bullet into his groin at point blank range, but they couldnt get him to relinquish his grip. It was only when the CR gas finally overcame him that they gained entry. (and they say us northeners are mad !!)

The prisoners inside were vomiting and blinded from the gas, many unable to stand, yet the beatings these defenceless men took were horrendous. Dogs were set on them and some men beaten so badly around the head they were unrecognisable to their friends afterwards.

Its worth noting as well that the great leader Gerry Adams was in charge of one of the huts in the compound when this occured. Despite being ordered to do so, he refused to burn his hut along with the other prisoners. When the brits attacked the prisoners, they pleaded with him to come out and help them. He turned his back and re-entered the hut.

The rest as they say, is history.

Would there be any possibility of some sense of reality being brought to proceedings here? The deliberate murder of six million Jews is incomparable to anything else, let alone the use of strong tear gas to put down rioting terrorist prisoners.

"Former POW Kevin Carson said it showed how the British engaged in chemical warfare against "defenceless" prisoners in Long Kesh and said it was particularly poignant that the news should break on the week of the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz where tens of thousands of men, women and children were gassed by the Nazis."

And how can I not mention the latest gem from the fountain of Barry's knowledge:-

"He has never smoked in his life, yet he developed asthma during this period."

An expert on all things revisionist, Mr Barry has now become a medical doctor. And here was I thinking that asthma has hardly anything to do with smoking.

The Republican POWs in Long Kesh were not terrorists.

The British government have experimented with chemicals on their own troops in the past. They have even sent them into places like Iraq, badly equipped.
They have also covered up abuse of their own troops in places like Deepcut.
Do you think it was beyond them to abuse people who were fighting for freedom?

On the subject of The Holocaust, the British knew what was happening at least as early as 1943, possibly even earlier. They refused to sanction the bombing of Auschwitz on grounds that prisoners could be killed even though they could have destroyed infrastructure far away from the prisoners. This led a leading British historian to label it as a 'moral lapse'

Oh and by the way, whilst we are still at it, why do you think the British government changed the name of Long Kesh?

If the sneaking regarder Mary McAleese saw fit to apologise for her ill-advised comments linking the troubles in the North to the murder of six million people (more than the entire population of this island), then I don't think it's too much to expect a similar apology here.
BTW, your so-called POWs are unmandated terrorists in the eyes of the right-thinking moral majority.

Firstly the "terrorists" he refers to were often men who were interned, without semblance of any trial.

Secondly, someone whose entire housing estate was enveloped in clouds of cs gas for two years or more, and who then develops breathing complications, doesnt need to be a genius to figure out a potential link.

Perhaps RC would be happy to have his own kids sprayed with the stuff 2 or 3 times a week. Sure its harmless.

I dont just reckon this idiots a pd, I think hes a guard.

On the contrary, it could certainly be compared to the (approx) 5 million Irish people starved to death during An Gorta Mor

Said it before Baz, they are Brit agents paid to come in here and spread their little piggy propaganda.

I had the pleasure of meeting an elderly lady a few years back who while sitting in her font room watching the telly had the pleasure of a rubber bullet in the face by a squaddie who walked up to her window and deliberatley fired the round through it. She kept the Rubber Bullet as a souvenir - not that she can see it - she was blinded in the attack. They changed the Regiment quickly.

Just like that other tactic as mentioned to by our S. African poster above of changing the name of Long Kesh Internment Camp to the Maze and Windscale to Sellafield.

The Devil has many names.

I'm insulted by people who pretend that the British government is somehow the victim of the Irish Republicans.

The British Government, if one studies world history, has attempted genocide in more countries than even their bureaucrats can count.

The "famine" in Ireland is a fine example of British behavior. There was no famine -- there was more than enough food grown in Ireland to easily feed everyone. Only the potato crop failed; the grains grown by the natve Irish (in their position as tenant farmers or slaves -- you can pick the term) were all healthy. The Brits had a choice. They could feed the people they'd enslaved, but feeding the Irish would have required cutting back on their lives of debauchery and pure laziness. It wasn't a hard choice for the British.

The only thing surprising about the events since November 2004 is that George W Bush thinks that his interference in the internal politics of Ireland is appropriate. (I'm not sure that "surprise" is the appropriate word; disgust is probably more accurate.)

The Brits need to stay on their own island and torment the folks who live there. They'll soon find out that the Scots, Cornish, and Welsh aren't happing about the behavior of the British either.

CHEMICAL ENGLAND
TERRORIST ENGLAND
________________________

The news of gassing the Irish POW is no surprise to us. Terrorist England has carried out hundreds of thousands of terrorist acts in United Ireland in the past and this gassing of our people is just one more criminal act, which went unpunished.

We are now calling England as, Chemical England.

Chemical England is the greatest terrorist of the world.

Or rather to the idiot who claimed that the prisoners were terrorists, have a look at the history books, especially the parts regarding "internment". Some of them were members, yeah, but the majority weren't. Even if they had all been members, so fucking what?

So you think its ok to expose prisoners to noxious fumes. Why? To subjudicate them? To test it out so that some pleb in the MOD could say "yeah it works - add it to our christmas shopping list". To keep the Paddys in line and stop them getting uppity and causing trouble?

I dunno who's more twisted. The ones that actually carried this out or the ones who know the facts, choose to ignore them and try to excuse it..

Is there any chance of this british terrorism taken up by the security council of UN ?? I dont think so because there is no justice for the Irish in the world. Liam, geneva convention can always be manipulated to meet one's needs. These innocent people were the POWs and those who deny it, are not telling the truth. The british terrorists showed their true criminal culture by using chemical gas against these POWs and they should be punished for it. Are we asking too much ? Are our demands unjustified ?? No certainly not. We are not the perpetrators. It is the war criminal british government which carried out terrorism against the sons of united ireland and not the other way around.

To suggest, in these desperate times, that the British people should suffer the imposition of trade sanctions for the crimes of a government that oppressed their own as much as the Irish or any other nation, truly beggars belief. Have you people no insight into the methods of oppression that have been used to conquer us all throughout the ages? Obviously not because you are still falling into the very same trap - namely - hate-filled nationalism, bitterness and sectarianism. The hour, dear friends, is getting late and we can no longer afford to be divided. Have you not looked at the actions of the Irish government of late?, the corruption of the Irish judicial system?, the immunity from consequences of crimes for the rich?, the use of Shannon by the US military?, the accelerating gap between rich and poor? etc. etc. etc. The British undoubtedly committed many atrocities in this country but it should not be forgotten that it was Irish troops that were used to guard the ships that were taking food away from these shores during the famine and that, in many cases, it was Irish landlords and Irish agents that oppressed their own. There are good and bad and just plain desperate everywhere.

Nationalism has ever been used by the powers that be to fulfill their own self-serving agenda and there have been martyrs to the cause of compassion, truth and righteousness of every nationality - even British! So come, children, you don't have to go searching for an old war to fight, there is one all around you. Our enemies are ignorance, corruption and greed and a world-wide government that is at war with ALL of us beneath. Leaders throughout the world support the same agenda and they use, through the media, the twin weapons of fear and flattery to manipulate us against ourselves. Remember that both the prime-minister and the president of this country are unelected. If you continue down this route we will remain forever divided and conquered! Love and Peace.
