Last night I saw musician friends perform to a half jewish audience (one who lives in BCN for being conscientious objectors, four who have long supported the Palestinian people), in a local occupied arts centre a series of ashkanazi, sephardic and gypsey songs they've put together with spoken text, which tells the story of a brother and sister who were divided, went to the camps and survived.
Their performance focusses on the years after the liberation as they finally "by the grace" were re-united. Many survivors were re-united often by what seemed mere chance. What happened to the victims of the camps afterwards can not be forgotten either. Reading Primo Levi's accounts of his return, ought help you. I was taught by one of my childhood music teachers who was left orphaned in 1945 with only threads of identity.

On Thursday across the civilised world, we will remember the Shoah, the victims of the Holocaust, Jewish, Soviet, Religious, Masonic, Political.
We will remember the extermination and the experimentation.
We will begin yet again to shine light on the escape of its architects and criminals from central Europe to the Americas in the post war period.
Meanwhile we must also _make the connection_ of the road to the Holocaust with now.

The forced sterilisation of those deemed "unfit to reproduce" because they were thought to carry a genetic predisposition to mental or physical handicap. The experimentation of the camps did not just spring out of the ground, no more than the anti-semitism which saw the jewish peoples of Europe targetted.
Anti-semitism had been widespread and supported by military and state institutions, even before Isaac Rosenberg's time with the South African regiments, Dreyfus has been condemned by the French, Russian villages had been pogromed.
And Eugenic theories were widespread as well and not just confined to Germany. Nor just confined to one ethnic group. Many of Mengele's associates before and during the war were of part jewish ancestry and he is known to have lobbied on their behalf so that they would remain practising scientists and join him in his projects.
In Europe the first state to introduce sterilisation laws was Sweden, whilst at the same time promoting a very questionably "sale" of hungarian "orphans" to remote agricultural communities.
In the USA these utterly false ideas of "improving" the "breed" found ready believers in the generation after Theodore Roosvelt's rapid rise to power based throughout on notions of forging an "american race".

To remember the six million jews , to remember the many other millions of prisoners means to remember properly.

It doesn't end with watching Schindler's list.
It means reading "a brief history of Time" and thinking "the author would not have been allowed to live". It means looking at any photo of the sistine chapel and thinking "the painter would not have been allowed to live". It means looking at the popular Disney movie "the incredibles" and thinking "is that what we all were going to be?".
It means teaching ourselves and our next generation that the world entered the most profound darkness through ignorance and belief in false science and an initial lack of morality.

he was called up to fight in the great war where he died as a private in the trenches on April Fools day 1918. His poetry prempts for many the depth of horror which the Holocaust rationalised. Amongst his poetical works (few of which are online save those on US high school courses) we read again and again of Babalon, Titan, the "Hell to come" he surely was an example of another great war poet Gurney's words "there are strange hells in the minds war made"

this was one of his reflection on the anti-semitism he experienced in the south african sections of the trenches-

Lit by a lamp in his blood
Ten immutable rules, a moon
For mutable lampless men.

The blonde, the bronze, the ruddy,

The poetry of Rosenberg is relevant to Holocaust memory, not only because the vast majority of victims were jewish, but also because the hatred of the Great War had not ended in any trench. Hatred of any "other" of any "minority" is a key symptom of what we now understand as nazi-ism. If we move to remember the Holocaust, we ensure that "it never happens again". That the joint machineries of technology, propaganda, science, and war are never allowed to come together to create Hell for any minority, for any majority.

the Shoah is all over history books and TV, but the total death figures of the Holocaust and Extermination camps and Experimentation are far far greater and touch upon the family memories of our new citizens of the European Union, whose grandparents and parents did not enjoy the very feeble moves to "proto-democracy" that most of the western European states did from 1949 - 1974.
One third of our 450,000,000 people with which we either prove the "empire" of europe or the "peace" of europe have grown up in oppression of memory, culture, identity and lies as strong as "ours" but much more recent.
If the "EU" of May 1 2004 does not provide them with at the very least the same health, cultural and social protection and self esteem that they enjoyed under the Warsaw Pact during the depths of Stalinism and the Stassi then the mediocre well fed appearing leaders of Europe will have failed.

And the young of the "east" know this well-
Which is why they have left their parents' homes to visit us, to study with us, to clean our toilets, to watch us at our game of "prosperity", to test our prejudices, to "suss us out".

If we truly welcome them, Polish, lithuanian, latvian, slovak, czech, rumanian, and every slav then we may finally celebrate the victory of Liberty over the darkness.

If we condemn them to "second class citizenship" then we have acheived nothing more than the ambition of the austrians in the 1940s all along.

I ask you this memorial day, to take a paperclip and bend it at it's longest side and you will then have a heart shape to put on your lapel.

If you wish to remember the sacrifice of the 6 million jews, then wear a blue paperclip heart.
If you wish to remember the millions of soviet soldiers and communists and trade unionists wear a red clip heart.
If you wish to remember the victims of gender wear a pink clip heart.
if you wish to remember any victims you may find a colour paperclip in your local "1€ or more store".

When we remember properly
we may go forward and build a Europe
of Peace where muslim christian jew humanist and hindu and rastafarian and all beliefs may live in tolerance with the handicapped and old and young. And then we may talk of "the rights of smaller peoples". But there are many other more important things to do _in Europe_ before we may with clear and clean conscience help the Americas, Africa, Asia and the world.

The overwhelming ethnic origin of victims was jewish.
However the ethnic scope was universal.
Mengele's research material included all europeans (including soldiers of his own side), russians (all types) and africans. Thanks to the inclusion of an islamic regiment in the SS in the late 1940s to fight the balkan front, we know he got a peek at others from yet further away.

Mengele's believed we were made differently, and that he could discover the way to create children for the barbarity to populate the earth.
