Cooley Environmental and Health Group has published (January 2005) a book entitled "Cancer Mortality and Morbidity in County Louth." The author is D G Pringle, Department of Geography and National Institute For Regional and Spatial Analysis, National University of Ireland, Maynooth, Co Kildare.

The book comprises the complete report that Dr Pringle presented to Cooley Environmental and Health Group in December 2003. Some of the chapter sub-headings, for example, are "Does Louth Have a High Incidence of Cancer?" and "Does Cooley Have a High Incidence of Cancer?"

The book is dedicated to the memory of Alan Mullen (1957 - 1999). Alan was the much loved chairman of Cooley Environmental and Health Group from its foundation in 1994 until his death in 1999.

The report has been available for nearly a year already on Cooley Environmental and Health Group’s website www.cooleyehg.com (see "Links" page) and the general conclusions of the report are already well-known. The report was the subject of at least two parliamentary questions last year. However it remains a classical work which, at the very least, outlines in an accessible way what the pitfalls and problems are when talking about cancer statistics or any similar medical statistics.

The book is being stocked by Ann Larkin (Proprietor), Greenore Co-op/Post Office, Euston Street, Greenore, Co Louth. It is also available from the writer of this article.

The price of the book to members of the public is €5 - which is roughly what it cost to produce each of the 95 copies printed. Students or people of limited means can look for a concession on the price which will be variable depending on circumstances.

I wish to thank indymedia for the courtesy of its pages in 2004, and I wish to extend best wishes for the New Year to all indymedia readers.
