The WHO once aimed to help nations stand on their own two feet, but now it mainly pushes the agendas of the rich and powerful, says Dr David Bell. That's why it cares more about experimental vaccines than basic sanitation.

Is Rishi Sunak English? Prof Eric Kaufmann says yes, by nationality, but not by ethnicity. It's a subject that typically produces more heat than light, but that's because people don't pin down their terms.

The Elon Musk witch hunt is a key test for the Royal Society, says Prof Abhishek Saha. Activist academics are piling on the pressure to expel the technological pioneer. Does the society stand for science or not?

EGM of Campaing Against Service Charges for Dun Laoghiare/Rathdown - 2:30pm - Symths Pub

category dublin | bin tax / household tax / water tax | event notice author Monday November 15, 2004 22:43author by Terry - None Report this post to the editors

EGM on Sat Nov 20th at 2:30pm, Symths Pub Lwr Georges St, Dun Laoghaire (beside Iceland)

Come to the emergency general meeting of the campaign to discuss how we can beat this unjust tax. The meeting is for the whole Dun Laoghaire/Rathdown area so we need people from every part of the county to attend. The meeting will take place on Satuday November 20th at 2:30pm in Smyth's Pub, Lower George's St (i.e. the main St), Dun Laoghaire. (beside Iceland shop).

Speakers
Cllr. Joan Collins (anti Bin Tax candidate elected in Crumlin)
Richard Boyd Barrett (Chair, Campaign Against Service Charges)
Lisa Maher (Secretary of Campaign Against Service Charges)

Yet again, the Council is sending out threats of court action and non collection of rubbish to bully people into paying the unjust bin tax. We should not bow to this bullying. These are the same threats the council made for the last five years. They are making these threats because so many people are still not paying.

The council now plans to bring in a new 'pay-by-weight' scheme in January. They say it is a fairer system. But if they admit the old flat charge was unfair - why are they chasing people for arrears?

The new 'pay-by-weight' scheme is also a con. Householders are still asked to pay a flat rate of E150 per year even if they put out no rubbish. On top of that there is a charge of E2 per lift and a weighted charge. Most people will be asked to pay as much or more under the new scheme. This double tax will further widen the gap between rich and poor. It will also lead to massive illegal dumping and burning of rubbish.

The government and council don't care about the environment. They have failed to provide proper recycling facilities and they are building toxic incinerators around the country. Their real agenda is to privatise waste management so their friends in business can make huge profits.

We must keep up the fight against the bin tax or charges will rise rapidly every year and water charges will follow. We will be paying Euro-1000 per year for local services we have already paid for through our taxes! We must put pressure on the new council's to get rid of these charges. The Labour Party is in power with Fine Gael in all four Dublin Councils. They said they were against the bin tax. We must demand they do something about it now.

Since Joan Collins left the SP and got elected to the Dublin City Council the SP have consistently tried to imply that she is attached to the SWP. This despite the fact that she is part of an independent group of activists in the Crumlin/Greenhills area and has consistently worked with other groups on the left including the SP, ISN, WP as well as the SWP. By the way the Dun Laoghaire campaign is a dual monarchy run by RBB of the SWP and Lisa Maher of the SP. The two parties have carved out the area geographically with SWP getting the east and SP the west in a crass example of fiefdomship. BTW does Lisa Maher's appearance on this platform mean she's joined the SWP?

The campaign in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown is more than 5 years old and is the longest running of the 4 city campaigns. Quite clearly then, it's name was adopted before the word Bin Tax was used by others

Everywhere else we have campaigns against the Bin Tax. But in snooty Dun Laoighaire they have a Campaign Against Service Charges! How quaint! I'm surprised they dont call it the Kingstown Campaign Against Service Charges.

Would be to get RBB out of the chair. How can one person be chair of the IAWM, chair of the Save DL Baths, Chair of DLRD Anti Bin tax, an SWP fulltimer etc etc. No one person could fulfil all of these functions.

RBB just collects a portifolio of positions so that he can raise his profile. Elect a genuine activist as chair. Campaigns are built by bringing on new people; not by one person hogging the leading positions in every campaign the SWP is involved with.
