Free Seamus Doherty

category national | rights, freedoms and repression | news report author Saturday October 23, 2004 20:31author by Rebiliun Report this post to the editors

March & Rally

Several hundred people gathered at Free Derry Corner in Derrys Bogside for a march and rally in support of a fitted-up republican prisoner, Seamus Doherty.

Many friends and family members of Seamus held posters demanding his immediate release from prison.

A whiteline picket was also held en route through the city centre.

Members of the 32SCM and the IRSP spoke at the rally in a show of solidarity for the campaign.

Martin Mulholland, IRPWA • 27 July 2004
The Irish Republican Prisoners Welfare Association demands the immediate unconditional release of Derry Republican Seamus Doherty. There is widespread alarm within the Republican community that this miscarriage of justice is being allowed to continue despite serious doubts regarding the credibility of the charges against him.

Seamus Doherty has been in custody on remand since 13 June 2003 when he was charged in connection with the discovery of two Booby-trap car bombs outside Newry in September 2002. It is alleged that forensic evidence, namely DNA, links Seamus Doherty to components on one of the bombs. It has since been revealed that the security forces conspired to frame two south Down men, Martin Brogan and Mark Carroll, in connection with this explosives find and both men subsequently had all charges dropped.

Revelations that the RUC/PSNI and the British Army contaminated evidence interfered with the workings of the Independent Forensic Science Laboratory and used an undercover agent to set the men up have undermined any trust in these agencies.

While Brogan and Carroll have been released, Seamus Doherty is entering his 14th month in Maghaberry Gaol, undoubtedly a victim of the same undercover operation that failed against the two south Down men. Seamus Doherty is adamant that his DNA was planted by an agent and/or agencies of the state.

Shortly before Seamus Doherty's arrest an RUC search team entered his home using their own key; Seamus was restrained while a number of the search team wandered around his flat unhindered. When Seamus managed to cry for help the intruders hurriedly vacated his apartment shouting "Wrong flat, let's go".

Despite repeated requests from Seamus Doherty's solicitor, the RUC/PSNI has yet to give an explanation for their presence in his flat. The answer may lie in a letter from a forensic science lab in England to one in Carrickfergus which stated that DNA found on the explosives couldn't be identified, and more ominously a handwritten note by a detective Allen which states "Maybe more work needs to be done?"

It is a cause for concern that less than 24 hours after the date on the letter a RUC/PSNI/FRU team is rummaging around Seamus Doherty's flat where DNA is readily available from combs, toothbrushes or any number of items.

Given the recent high profile incidents of police malpractice/corruption and the undisputed evidence of politically motivated frame ups in the cases of Noel Abernethy, Martin Brogan, Mark Carroll, Sean Dillon, Don Mullan, Kevin Murphy and Brendan O Connor we in the IRPWA believe that Seamus Doherty ought to be freed immediately. It is obvious to anyone willing to see that the British State is still involved in framing critics of its rule in Ireland and it will use any means it deems necessary.

Not only do we demand the release of Seamus Doherty but we also call for all cases where DNA evidence has been used to hold or convict republicans to be thrown out of court, it is obvious nothing from these sources can be trusted. Finally we demand a full independent non-British inquiry into the machinations of the British Security establishment in the afore mentioned cases in order that
justice might finally be done.

An innocent man imprisoned is a terrible thing - if that's the case. I really don't know and never heard of this man before today. It wouldn't surprise me to hear yet again the powers that be have dirty hands.

But terrorists and murderers who support rallies for 'justice' are a mockery. This is their handy work around the globe....

Those who make bombs, shoot guns and pursue killing in the name of...what do they know of justice or human rights?

This is the same twisted logic that many find themselves pumping out as soon as they hear or see anything about the 'BLACK NORTH'.

I was glad to see people taking part in the project that is indymedia from the North despite the rantings of the previous poster. What a dumb sicko you are!

This is the same twisted logic that people here jump to when someone such as myself speaks of and supports justice for the people of Palestine. They'd link this with the 'WAR ON TERROR' or some such rubbish, or worst!

The site managers of indymedia should simply remove the last post and let those of us like myself get educated about the continued injustise such as British establishment have clearly delt Seamus Doherty and his family.

Lets have MORE postings from the six counties, more solidarity with people actually in struggle!

I agree free Seamus Doherty!

IRSP SPEECH AT FREE SEAMUS DOHERTY CAMPAIGN MARCH IN DERRY ON SATURDAY 23RD OCTOBER 2004

Friends and Comrades,

Can I begin today by thanking the organizers of today’s event for their kind invitation to speak. We in the Republican Socialist Movement are no strangers to the type of tactics that are currently being employed against Seamus Doherty. Since our formation thirty years ago the leading lights in our movement have been assassinated and taken out of circulation. We had the killing of the founding father of the IRSM Seamus Costello, gunned down by counter revolutionaries in Dublin just three years after he helped form the IRSM. We suffered through the prison struggles of the late seventies and early eighties losing men on hunger strike while many more suffered degrading and dehumanizing treatment at the hands of the sectarian and hate filled screws. We had members arrested, tortured and put on trial for the great train robbery in Sallins in Co Kildare despite there being no evidence for such charges. These men were detained by the infamous “Heavy Gang” which was the 26 county’s answer to militant revolutionary republicanism. We also lost many members through the failed supergrass show trials of the early eighties and in 1987 and again in 1996 the IRSM was forced to defend it’s members from outside attacks which were inspired by sinister forces from the so-called security forces. The reason I am mentioning the attacks on our movement is to provide inspiration to the friends, family and supporters of Seamus Doherty. Because despite these attacks on our movement we have come through them more determined and stronger than before to reach our goals.

Despite all of this the IRSM has stood firm. We have come through all these attacks from various agencies of the British and Irish states. Seamus Doherty is undoubtedly a victim of the British state fitted up and left to rot in Maghaberry. So too is Dessie O’Hare, an INLA prisoner from Armagh who is currently being held hostage by the Free State regime in contravention of agreements that they themselves have signed up to. We in the IRSP are sure we can depend on your support in the campaign to free Dessie.

To members of the wider nationalist community who continue to ignore the plight of Seamus and others like him we have this to say, “It is time to wake up and smell the coffee, the new PSNI is just the RUC in a new uniform. Their actions in the continuing incarceration of Seamus is proof if any was needed that the RUC cannot be reformed into something that is acceptable to the people of this city and across the north. This sectarian paramilitary force has nothing positive to offer the people of this city. The cheerleaders of this force such as Denis Bradley and other puppets in the District Police Partnerships are attempting to put a gloss on the PSNI and to make them more acceptable, whatever that means. We say here loud and clear, the reformed RUC under the guise of the PSNI will never be acceptable to the people of this city!” We would also like to reiterate the belief of the IRSP that the British establishment has no fundamental right to imprison any Irish person. We seldom hear this sentiment expressed. No matter what charges are brought they are brought illegally by a British police and a British court system in occupied Ireland.

And to Seamus, his family and friends we offer our unconditional support. Seamus is suffering the same oppression that we are all too familiar with but we are sure that self-belief exists and that that determination will win through. We have watched and supported the campaign to win Seamus’ freedom and we admire the determination and energy that exists within that campaign and that gives us confidence that Seamus will be home soon.

Thank you

Take this quote as an example:

"Not only do we demand the release of Seamus Doherty but we also call for all cases where DNA evidence has been used to hold or convict republicans to be thrown out of court, it is obvious nothing from these sources can be trusted."

so in cases where this evidence was used to convict republicans the should be released, Why only republicans? What makes them so special? Maybe they think that the law should apply to everyone else and not them? Maybe thats because thy are soooooooo special?
In many cases when young girls are raped DNA evidence is the only thing that can be used to convict rapists, so effectivley the launcher of this post is a rapist/paedophile defender!

Rooster me old cock, the point you seeem to have missed is that in recent months , DNA and other evidence emanating from the supposedly independent Forensic labs has been proved conclusively to have been tampered with in the case of REPUBLICAN POLITICAL PRISONERS (dduuuhhhhh!!!!)

This has been as a result of senior RUC/PSNI special branch operatives BEING CAUGHT OUT leaning on members of staff and encouraging them to come up with the "right result". This has been admitted in open court.
A number of cases in recent months have also resulted in acquitals rather than have details of tampered evidence and the use of dirty tricks, frame ups and entrapment emerge in the public domain. Forensic lab scientists have alleged under oath that it is common practice for these political policemen to pressure and cajole staff to fit up REPUBLICAN PRISONERS with dodgy PLANTED evidence.

That is why DNA evidence CANNOT be relied upon IN THE CASES OF REPUBLICANS. The Forensic labs have now been proven on a number of occasions to be non-independent, therefore the evidence is absolutely tainted in these POLITICAL CASES.

As for defendinding rapists/paedophiles the cases of Kincora boys home, William McGrath and Vincent McKenna LEAP to mind. The state protected those scum for years.

The IRSP, on the other hand ,would I imagine have a ...ahem... less tolerant view of these type of "people" and so are undeserving of your ignorant response to their post on this site, ....you idiot.

Oh, ok Rudeboy, i get it: there are terrorists and 'terrorists'. Ach, and I was getting them confused.

All those innocent civilians cut down while going about their daily business in my province over my lifetime aren't really dead - because we don't really have terrorists - we only have political activists!

To say otherwise means I'm a British-Nazi-sicko supporting Bush's Big Brother propoganda!

And even if we did have terrorists - they're ok - it's those other types of gun running, money laundering, bomb making, pistol whiping, drug racketeering, kidnapping, population repressing, blockade forming masked villans that are evil henchmen.

It's called an opinion, it's very simple: free the innocent, convict 'murderers'. Stop the killing.
