Two gardaí were acquitted of assaulting a participant in the Reclaim The Streets party held in May 2002. It's interesting to note that two years later, despite extensive video evidence of garda brutality not one garda has yet been convicted of any crime.

Insp. Kennedy of Shannon Garda Station kicked me in the side once when I was involved in a completely peaceful road blockade (sit-down) near the airport.
Luckily I haven't had that much to do with the police, but from what little experience I have had, I would say that
(a) they are terribly lacking in anger management training (they get pissed off, then hurt people), and
(b) the system to register and handle complaints against police needs to be more independent and powerful.
Thing is Al you are suggesting as you have been all along that the guy was fair game for a beating, just like RTS or TBtC folk.
It is not a "fan-club for cops". Obviously you are new around here. (Store St) Al generally gets as much as he gives.

Firstly, I am not from Limerick. You obviously didn't read the news articles on the site or didn't even look for facts before shouting your mouth off about shit you know nothing about.
I was never in prison in my life and have never been manhandled by a cop. I am not trying to make my father out to be an angel at all.
My father is partially disabled due to an accident over 25 years ago.
I am not on the dole either. I work hard.
The cops, noting your posts are obviously one or a GRASS, have no right whatsoever to attack a person who was readily giving himself up when he held his hands out and said, "Here. Put the cuffs on."
The people present that night were residents of the estate along with 8 or nine cops.
Learn the facts Al.
I am sorry for burdening this site as it is obviously a fan-club for cops.
Being from Limerick, Al version of the events is true,
the reason dans fathers was partially disabled was due to drink unless of course he means his brain being disabled and him acting like a complete thug all his life
Ah now we are getting closer to the truth.
The truth of this matter is Dan, his father and his mates are violent thugs who like nothing better than to beat the crap out of people and steal. They dont work and laugh at those that do.
On the night in question Dans father got pissed as a fart and started throwing his weight around. The Gardai were called and on getting there realised that Dans father had a few mates with him, now considering that stun guns are apparantly common posessions in Limerick the Gardai called for backup.
The backup arrived and the 2 Gardai arrested Dans father however he, being a career criminal who is frequently violent, obviously knows how to handle himself. More Gardai helped restrain Dans father as he had by now kicked in the door/window of the patrol car.
Now, the boys werent liking this too much so they decided Dans father wasnt being arrested tonight. Bit of argy bargy resulted, the Gardai took the old trusty baton's out (remembering that stun guns are common amonst Dan and his mates) and Dan and his mates went home with their tails between their legs.
Back home Dan and his mates sit around with a few more cans of Dutch Gold talking, "Fuck Dan, we cant let people know the pigs got the better of us", "Fuck tha Micka, we didnt do nuthin, the pigs had stun guns, roight?".
So the story was created. Unfortunately people in the area didnt actually believe Dan but agreed with him anyway. Whispers start, "Dan and his Da got sorted by the guards", "good enough for em". Dan decides on a new method, hey I dont need any proof or support to go on the internet and post whatever I want, I dont need proof to back me up like I do for TV and radio. "To the internet!" was the cry which is how Dans one man message board was created. It doesnt appear to say anything but hey, its a start.
Of course I have no proof of what I say but then again, neither does Dan. I could rip his story apart with facts and figures but whats the point? Its so obviously biased and fictional. Try learning about proceedures inside stations and the complaints board dan, then you might make a more convincing story next time.
But chin up Dan, Im sure it will become the place to post for career criminals like yourself but watch out for chavs trying to be tough. You dont want 'wannabees' getting in on the act. Cause we all know the only way Gardai can arrest a hardman like you and your father is by using unfair treatment.
12 more victims of law and order in no doubt they were too scared to vote against Robocop and his well oiled team.. mucksavages i tell ya
Folks, you are completely misunderstanding my plight here.
My problem is not with my father being arrested and punished for what he has done. My problem is with the cops and how they handle such arrests. There are ways to arrest people. I mean, how are they trained?
I did not see the Stun-Gun myself. I was told by someone present there that they used one.
Read the thread from the link below. Also, there is another link at the bottom of that thread for you to download the word document containing the new article.
Yes, my father is no angel and has a long history of violence. The problem is, the cops arrest his, which is fine, but once they have him in a cell, the beat the crap out of him with battans. Is this law abiding and legal? I don't think so.
Recently, there were about 20 people fighting in the same area with crowbars, knifes etc. The cops did nothing and it wasn't even mentioned on the papers or radio. But, my father broke the windows of a squad car and it is all over the radio and local papers. A little strange, don't you think?
I am not defending my father and saying he should get away with what he does. I am saying the cops should be investigated regarding their handling of detained suspects.
Personally I have never known a Garda that has even owned a stun gun nevermind carry it on duty.
The comments made speak for themselves, maybe Dan, his father and their friends all have access to such weapons but I hardly think the majority of law abiding Irish citizens have.
Also notice in Dans comments that he blah, blahs his way through the punishment his father should get. No mention of his fathers actions, why he was arrested, how many Gardai were initialy present (Gardai dont patrol in groups of 8) or how many of Dans friends were present.
This is the kind of story I have been warning against for so long.
I doubt they have them officially but there endless amount of people in Ireland with stun guns "for personal use" sounds just like an vindictive garda to have one to use for punishment beatings.
Since when have the gards been using stun guns? Perhaps Al can enlighten us on this matter. I have my doubts about you, Dan. From the contents of your site it appears that your father has some sort of record of violence.
I wonder if Dave is perhaps a little one sided in this debate? How many Guards had the stun guns and what was the result? He got shocked, went to the cells for the night, big deal. You get shot in other countries. Next time dont break the law.
Despite the evidence, the cops still and always will be believed at any court in this country until people stand up and voice some noise.
Two nights agao, I watched my 60-year-old partially disabled father being jumped on by eight, yes 8, guards where they lifted him up and hopped him off the ground. They then proceeded in beating him and using one of these stun-guns on him. He is now in Limerick Prison awaiting trial.
My father is no angel and did do some damage to a squad car that night. Yes, he should be punished blaa blaa blaa. However, there are ways to arrest people and the way my father was arrested was not one of them.
I immediately set up Stop Brutality, which was in the back of my mind with some time. I set it up in the hopes that other victims of this illegal law enforcement will come forward and make their voices heard. This kind of attrocity has to end. These so-called coppers must be stopped.
It is a shame because there are some good cops there too who are doing their job right.
Thank you.
Remember this is the same gardai who effectively brushed the biggest mass-murder in the history of the 26 county state (Dublin/Monaghan) under the carpet, even disposing of the evidence, along with dozens of other murders of Irish citizens that their MI5 buddies committed. While all this was going on the guards where having wekend drinking and blue movie- sessions with the very people they KNEW were up to their necks in innocent Irish blood. Dublins files on the D/M bombings have just lately disappeared so not much change there then. If this was'nt bad enough they even treated the D/M families as virtual subversives when they laid wreaths in memory of their loved ones. If anyone thinks after all that they are going to get in trouble for clobbering a few hippies they've another thing coming.
I may have fallen on hard times, but I still have some self-respect.
Why don't you join up. The minister for justice is making it even easier to join the Gardaí. All you people coming on here and slating the Gardaí for past misdeeds seem to forget that the ranks of the Gardaí are filled with your peers. Have you ever talked to you local community liason officer, probably not. So either shut up or sign up.
So is there any solution? Any ideas?
And don't forget the way some of them worked for British Intelligence. Wyman, Crinnion, the 'Badger', etc. Also don't forget the activities of the Garda 'Heavy Gang'.
These issues havn't gone away (you know).
"Sorry! It'll take more than a few "crusties" getting clonked at a "reclaim the streets" rally to rouse the public."
You'll find that it is hard to rouse the public for much but at the end of the day stat after stat shows that the public don't have much trust in the cops!!
Abbeylara, botched bank robbery interceptions, DONEGAL, etc, etc, kinda erodes public trust.
The Gardai are supposedly accountable to the public. Are they in this case? Maybe.... 3 were subjected to due process (courts) and if sufficient numbers of voters gave a shit about the incedent then there would have been an investigation.
Unfortunately, aside from fleeting interest in the sensational footage, only a very very small minority cares about this. They may be misguided, they may be leaving the door open to future beatings, it may be dead wrong, but they just don't care.
Sorry! It'll take more than a few "crusties" getting clonked at a "reclaim the streets" rally to rouse the public.
if you had read what I said you would know that I am not talking about the jury, but a board that investigates the Gardai's actions independantly, this was a discussion that was taking place in the papers immediately after the event in 2002, what I am saying is if there was a board to police the Gardai then perhaps they would be alot more careful when they drew their batons. At the moment they anwser to no-one, that is obvious as nobody is been held responsible for the incident, I agree that single Gardai should not be scapegoated, as was said in the Irish times yesterday but the fact of the matter is on mayday 2002 innocent people were beaten randomly for expressing their views, this is a democratic right, the majority of the people there were not there to cause trouble and they suffered, you can not lose sight of this, someone has to be held accountable for the incident you can not blame it all on the protestors, it's ridiculous
There is an independant board. The jury.
TT, I'm with you. Can you all stop the pointless bitching and have a proper discussion, its boring and unproductive. It's a very serious thing that these Gardai
have been acquitted despite the overwhelming video footage documenting the event. Basically it seems the Gardai used the footage in their favour, they had very good soliciters I expect. Obviously the police and the judical system are supporting each other, the Gardai uphold the law they can not be seen to break it, otherwise there would be mayhem, this is a serious issue. Basically there needs to be an independant board they need to answer to.
Delighted. Unanimous verdict speaks for itself.
You should take yourself up to Louth and join in the girlfriend bashing!!!!
apparently it's the latest sport among the upwardly mobile members of the glorious boys in blue, when they arent downloading child porn that is!!!
you never know they might even make you an inspector!!
But only after admitting to batoning an innocent member of the public, which they finally admitted posed no threat. Not guilty, not the same thing as didn't do it.
They did it and they got away with it, hope its not your skull thast gets cracked next time, and for sure there will be a next time since it's a well known fact that unpunished perps always reoffend.
This site depends on stories from the public.
'Balance', as a member of the public could have posted a proper story on this subject. Instead he/she whines and moans that nobody else has posted such a story.
Get a life.
I speak for myself, and voice what I know. Public opinion is obvious from the majority of decent hard working people I have met and spoken to.
Oh and you know what would have happened if the same shit had been started on the continent. A&E's would be still cleaning up after it.
Oh and stayparanoid staysafe if thats what you think. Jesus man get a clue. You imply that if a person on a jury makes a decision not favourable with the gards that they will be targeted? P A R A N O I D and Stoopid methinks.
nuff said
Of course not. I would not want to be on a jury that convicted them. I would not want to spend the rest of my days looking over my shoulder.
I don't recall the people of this country ever giving a zombie the right to speak for them.
Maybe its because they were responding to a serious breach of Public Order and the majority of the people in this wonderful land of ours believe they should have stomped a good bit harder.
Just my 2 cents worth :p
just a mention
Two Gardai exonerated. Thats three in total to date!
I seem to remember that following certain events at Dame Street in May 2002 this site had many contributions alleging that actions by the Garda were oppressive.
Its a shame that in the interests of balance and fairness that it hasn't been seen fit to publish even one or two articles acknowledging that two of the Gardai who were charged were exonerated by a 12 to 0 vote of their fellow citizens in court yesterday.
