As the war gets worse on Iraq and opposition to continued Irish involvement in the war evaporates from the streets. It seems like an appropriate time to come out again!
There is large passive opposition to Irish complicity in this war. 64% of Irish people opposed the recent Bush visit to Shannon Airport in June. Only 20,000 took to the streets of Dublin and 1300 gathered at Shannon Airport when Bush landed.
As essential it is for the protest movement to move to nonviolent resistance and support those who are making that move in Ireland in the UK/US militaries and amongst the civilian populations of those imperial states.....it is essential to move passive opinion to public protest.
If all who opposed the war and the continued Irish provision of a proxy base at Shannon Airport made a public statement (eg. took a sign and stood alone or with friends outside a Top Oil garage, the Aviation Authority, Shannon Airport, a relevant Embassy, Raytheon or the many other companies based in Ireland and profiting from this war on Iraq for one hour a week)....that could be a healthy start.
Whadyareckon?
While we slip into another slumber, occasionally interrupted by some outrage organised by the Man, some (very few unfortunately) continue to vigil, to stay awake. Much respect to the vigilant who press on in Dublin, in Galway and wherever else they be.
Another opportunity to make your voice heard is Speakers Square, Temple Bar Square, Dublin City every Sunday 2.00pm-6pm.
Speakers Corner has been going for five months. It started with a flourish when ngo's and left groups new openin day would be a media event and flourished again pre-referendum. But he seems that moderate ngo's & left groups see the significance in trying to engage the wo/man in the street.
Last Sunday with Rossa on Tour and Robbie on holiday it was pretty much JD doing the organisation/promotion and moi & a local poet doing the spruiking. So the phenomeno remains vulnerable and really needs some more commitment from regular speakers so folks can have a day off without feeling one is pullingthe rug from under the phenomenon.
Still even with this minimalist content a lot of good debate aout the war was had. And also connected with some great folks of all ages and class/cultural backgrounds.
