Against sectarianism

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Friday June 14, 2002 13:39author by Serious about changing the world Report this post to the editors

We must all share a common ideological perspective.

We must all share a common ideological perspective.

Perhaps we could publish a weekly national newspaper aimed at thick working class people who can't read that well, a tacky coffee table magazine for their more well educated comrades and an academic journal for the true intellectual leaders of our movement.

We could stand on the High street, in the rain trying to persuade people to sign petitions that we have no intention of handing in.

We could organise large public meetings with elite panels of liberal academics, journalists, politicians and trade union bureaucrats applauding their tedious speeches whilst privately disavowing their reformism.

We could learn to forget the events in history which are difficult to reconcile with our ideological straight jacket. We could use history as a way of proving that we are always right rather than as an opportunity to learn how we have gone wrong.

We could find ways of describing every defeat as a victory and ignore those who suggest trying differnt ways of working.

We could attack people who work differently or prioritise issues differently for being sectarians and distracting workers from the one true struggle.

We could see every person who is prepared to work with us as a potential new recruit rather than respecting that some people might not share our perspective.

We could hijack every project we get invovled with for our own ends and leave behind a trail of resentment.

Best of all, we could do absolutely nothing effective to tear assunder the the oppressive, exploitative and alienating society we live in, and spend our time complaining about bickering on the Irish indymedia newswire.

...we could change the world by writing shite like the above.

"Best of all, we could do absolutely nothing effective to tear assunder the the oppressive, exploitative and alienating society we live in, and spend our time complaining about bickering on the Irish indymedia newswire. "

I find it hard to get over some of this stuff. Don't you see the irony in what you have just written!!!!

But from the rest of the post it reads like you have been burnt by the SWP. Get over it, and get active in whichever campaign or party you agree with the most.

And some can be effective such as the water charges, bin charges the term time teachers strike etc not to mention mass work in north and west dublin.

Your point about newspapers is fair enough except if I could publish a weekly paper with news etc I would do it tomorrow, not so easy with no resources.

Now please take your own advice and get active, if you don't like parties there are campaigns for Iraq and South america, there are local campaigns and anti racist campaigns that are genuinely independent, and as well as the SWP who you obviously don't like there is the SP and this new irish socialit network. Also there is the people who publish red flag. And if you don't like that there is the WSM. The swp pissed you off fair enough but get over it.

To be honest this guy doesnt sound like hes been burnt by the SWP, he sounds like hes speaking on behalf of them, After all thats whats in the mind of all members of SWP i know.....('we could see every preson who is prepared to work with us as a new recruit rather than respecting that some people might not share our perspective.')

This is such radical stuff. This, how do you say it 'SP' must be so revolutionary. Keep it up, man!

Blank there is nothing like an armchair revoltuionary, obviously you are one because you don't realise that campaigns have to be run that effect the lives of people. And in different periods different types of campaigns will be run. Not just students in a bar talking shite. Less talk more action my good friend,
