Open Your Street to Car Free Day 2004

http://www.indymedia.org.uk/media/2004/08/297002.wmv

More people are celebrating Car Free Day around the world every year. You can too

Car Free Day activities have included ball hockey, balloon characters, bands, bicycle repairs, bike races, chalk murals, children's playzones, clowns, comedy, community cooks, craft vendors, decorating the road, face painting and lots more…

Here’s what I think the truth is: We are all addicts of fossil fuels in a state of denial, about to face [quitting] cold turkey. And like so many addicts about to face cold turkey, our leaders are now committing violent crimes to get what little is left of what we’re hooked on. -Kurt Vonnegut.

· Is there a way to get drivers out of their cars in one or more cities...
· In ways which will be tolerable in a pluralistic democracy...
· For at least be long enough to allow those concerned to learn a great deal more about the whole complex of things that need to be adjusted and introduced to make a car-less (or, more accurately, less-car) urban transport paradigm actually work?
Car-free Goals:
· Raise awareness of alternative transportation, especially non-motorized modes
· Reclaim the streets with fun events
· Celebrate walkable communities
· Send the message that cities should be organized around PEOPLE, not cars
· Provide a networking opportunity for alternative transportation activists
· Set a precedent for other communities to follow

September 22nd Join in have a laugh.

author by Starstruck - Critical Masser, soon not to be UCD Le.ft anymore..sob..publication date Mon Aug 30, 2004 19:57author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Last Friday 40 or so cyclists and about 10 pedestrians decided to travel around the city.
Except the difference between this journey and most others was that on this sunny evening WE were the traffic, and not the gaz-guzzling,pollution spewing city centre motorists
Now this wasnt an event intended to annoy motorists, most of whom were sitting alone in thier big chunks of metal on their long commute home(most of them were probably travelling less than 5 miles, would have been quicker cycling....!)
No,we were just taking back a little bit of space for an hour and a half or so,the other 742 and a half hours are alas all theirs..
742 and a hour hours of dodging angry motorists intent on getting from A to B as fast as possible..
742 and a half hours of weaving in and out of two ton moving chunks of metal(not forgetting buses and lorries) hoping that youll make it to B on your two wheeled transportation.
742 and a half hours of inhaling thick, chocking fumes and smog while youre just trying to travel in a clean, ecofriendly and healthy manner from place to place.
Well for those one and a half hours these concerns magically disappeared as we asserted our right to the city centre and in the process making things a lot quicker, easier and safer for the thousands of pedestrians in the area at the time.
It was a fun time for one and all despite one or two angry taxi drivers who i must say were exceptionally entertaining and provided a great source of amusement along the route.

This shit is serious though. We need to show to all the people of Dublin that their city centre would be a cleaner, safer, healthier and more enjoyable place to hang out and walk through every day.
So let show them this!

Car culture is part of big business and oil wars and its true nature must eb exposed..

Many thanks to Fnot B for the soup and also Derek for the excellent footage and everyone who came out!
