For a little over 360 days a year Dun Laoghaire is a tranquil leafy locale, but all that changes on the last weekend in August, as The Festival of World Cultures explodes into life with over 100 events taking place in 35 venues throughout Dun Laoghaire. The Festival is Ireland's leading intercultural festival - a dazzling weekend of internationally renowned acts and local talent - music, film, circus, theatre, dance performances, club nights, markets, exhibitions, workshops and children’s activities. With over 70% of the programme free to the public; on the streets, in the parks, on the
harbour and in the venues . . . a vibrant carnival atmosphere is guaranteed. The Festival of World Cultures is made possible through the generous sponsorship by O2, continued partnerships with the British Council, Oxfam Ireland and support from many other cultural organisation and local businesses.
From all corners of the globe musical and dramatic troupes descend on Dun Laoghaire to entertain, engage, cajole and dazzle you. 2004’s Festival programme includes: Caribbean Jazz, Latin Soul, African Rap, Percussion and Dance, Mexican Rock, Siberian Throat Singing, Tango, Flamenco, Cajun & Blues music, Traditional Indian Folk Dance, International Cabaret, Jamaican Reggae and of course, Ireland’s own traditional and contemporary sounds.
Festival highlights this year include; Spanish Amparanoia, Palestinian Amal Murkus, British Asian Nitin Sawhney, British Caribbean Jazz Jamaica All Stars, West African Toumani Diabate, Mexican Rodrigo & Gabriela , Senegalese Positive Black Soul amongst many more.
This year’s Festival includes a number of new and exciting ventures; an International food market, a dedicated open-air dance platform, a programme of World film in the Festival’s own dedicated mobile cinema and a featured Artists in Residence. This year the Festival’s headline stage is moving to Newtown Smith Green (between the People’s Park and Sandycove).
The Festival of World Cultures is now firmly established on the Irish Festival Calendar regarded as one of the most exciting and original event to emerge in recent years.
