Police and bulldozers siege Irunea's 'Gaztetxe' The 'Gaztetxe' Euskal Jai (derelict house, occupied and made into a self-substaining cultural centre run by the Basque youth ) in Irunea (Euskal Herria, The Basque Country), is being attacked by the police with the intention of demolishing it. Bulldozers are charging against the building putting the resisting people inside, who have chained themselves to the building, in great danger as the house may collapse at any moment. The Spanish seem to be learning from their Israeli counterparts! c/f eviction of casa encantada-
http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2003/07/274850.html
This summer's evicition wave in the Spanish state has seen typically "a period of resistance", followed by "a lull" followed by "a suprise attack by lots of police" follewed immediately by "demolition of the site".
CSOA Hamsa was evicted so after three months resistance and though the okupes re-entered the building within 72 hours, the estate agency who own the site had already ripped out the roof and caused extreme structural damage.
Here is a minute by minute update thing on Gaztetxe de Iruña :-

UPDATE!!!!
5 people have re-okupied Gaztetxe and seemingly it isn't in such a bad state as Hamsa was left in.

and if youwant to follow all this with photos and stuff-
more arrests relating to incidents which immediately followed the eviction of this squatted autonomous centre in the Navarran town of Pamplona. Big mobilisation in support has been called for August 21.
Speaking for the Delegation of the Government to Navarra (mechanism for the central Spanish state in it's communities or "provinces") Vicente Ripa, called for calm "as long as stones bottles and molotov cocktails are being thrown normality will not return to the Navarran capital".
on-going protest.

Pamplona is famous for it's yearly psychotic display of macho traditional spanish culture and bull running and being the capital of Navarra.
Pamplona is less famous for being a big town in the southern part of very traditional "nine province" Basque country.
