Monday August 09, 2004 13:00 by Mark Grehan - Residents Against Racism residentsagainstracism at eircom dot net 12a Brunswick place, Dublin 2 087 7974622 or 087 6662060
A protest has been called for on Tuesday 10th August at 12.30. The protest, which has been called for by Residents Against Racism, will take place outside the PD head office on South Frederick street and has been called to protest against the proposed deportation of Kate Bamidele. Kate comes from northern Nigeria, where Shari’a law is in force. Although often referred to as ‘Islamic law’, most of the world’s Muslims do not support the imposition of Shari’a at all. It dictates very strict rules and punishments, especially against women. Kate has three children aged between 4 and 8 from a relationship with a Christian man. In August 2002, four Shari’a policemen arrested her for having sex outside marriage, and a judge in a Shari’a court sentenced her to death by stoning. A few weeks before the stoning was to be carried out she managed to escape from prison. Eventually a priest helped her to hide, and she managed to get out of the country and reach Ireland. |

There were also Labour Party members present at the protest.
Just a few photos of the picket. The turnout was about 30 people - very good for a lunchtime picket like this. RTE and TV3 cameras were there as well as a few still photographers. I recognised members of RAR, WSM, DGN, UCDSU, SF, SWP there.
Let Kate stay
