Indymedia.ie Photo-Help page (potentially)

category national | arts and media | opinion/analysis author Wednesday July 07, 2004 02:14author by paul cummins - insomnia industries Report this post to the editors

Im trying to write one.

Indymedia has a huge amount of pages on it's group projects and processes at http://docs.indymedia.org they are made on a twiki (see twiki.org) which allows many people to edit one document.

I have tried to follow that example to make a photo help page http://docs.indymedia.org/view/Main/PaulCummins which would end up looking something like this http://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/~chewy/temp/photohelp.html

The page is mainly a collation of the text on the publish page and replies to request for help on publishing photos from the editors.

I've pointed out at some of the points needed clearing up in comments at the bottom of PaulCummins

Using and making Twiki's takes bit of getting use to but I am hoping this photohelp page can be an example for using twiki for other indymedia.ie collaborative projects.

you can browse around at http://docs.indymedia.org which has a number of help pages or register to edit here http://docs.indymedia.org/view/TWiki/TWikiRegistration or add corrections/suggestions to the comments here,

At the image section, click the browse button and find your images to input them.

Maximum image filesize: 60Kb
Maximum image width: 460 pixels
5 uploads at a time with your article

Any questions email the photo list at [email protected] or using the contact page or email [email protected]

Audio/Video
(The ability to upload audio and video and MB size thereof depends on the always fluctuating capacity.) You can also upload video and audio this way if you have any questions about audio/video please use the contact page and an Indymedia contributor or editor will be happy to give you technical advice..

Taking photos

Methods
Digital - Photos saved to memory card then transfer them to your computer then upload via internet.
Film - Develop film then scan it at home or in a internet cafe or place of work, then upload via internet.
It is now just as cheap to get your photos on CD as printed, ask at your photo developer.

One of the first rules of taking pictures is don't hesitate: snap.
Photogrpahers should be aware of peoples who may not want to be photgraphed. So if they ask not to be photographed don't or perhaps in the first instance don't take intrusive close up photos or photos of peoples faces.
Try not get in the way of the event.
Try to avoid posed photos.

Readying photos to be published on Indymedia.ie

The indymedia server has limited space so there is a limit of 60kb on uploading. If you wish to show more photos or photos of higher quality you could put a link to your own web space or use many of the free photo-album websites out there.

Because of the limits stated above you may have to reduced the size and quality of your images you can do this in most image editing packages or use a multiple image resizers of which freeware programs can be found on the internet. You need to achieve a balance between the visual size of the image and its kb size. As above your image has to be smaller then 460 pixels wide. You can In your photo editor if you "save as" you will be given an option of from one to ten for how much compression you want for your image, balance this till the size of the file is under 60kb.

When uploading media please try to use file formats that employ some level of compression, otherwise our servers resources will be used up needlessly, and site users with dialup connections will find it difficult to view your media. If you wish to become a regular contributor of media files you should consider reading up on the different media compression techniques and file formats available.

For photos, JPEG (.jpg,.jpeg) files are usually best, and .gif and .png files are good for graphics. You can use JPEG compression to make your photos smaller and still have decent looking images.

Photostory
One good way of displaying your photos is to do so in the style of a photostory where you pick out say 5 or 10 photos which describe the event in chronological order highlighting the main occurances. This may be better then simply uploading dozens of photos with little coherance. You can use this inconjunction with an article or perhaps with just a short caption with each photos or perhaps none at all where the photos show the story to the reader without any explaination needed.

Uploading

The first thing you do when you get to the publishing page is to set the number of photographs you are going to upload in the Files Upload box and click "let me do it!".
This resets the page and blanks the text boxes (so be careful don't fill in the text boxes first as you will lose all your work), and adds uploading options to the bottom of the publishing page.
fill in your story and make sure to select or fill in all the required inputs.
At the image section, click the browse button and find your images to input them. Try to make the time to add a small description of the photo, it is helpful for slow connections and accesibilty.

Photo list If you are interested in photography sign up here: http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/listinfo/imc-irl-photo

Audio/Video For video, the best formats are probably MPEG (.mpg,.mpeg), Windows Media Video (.wmv), Quicktime(.qt,.mov), and RealVideo?(.rm). Remember that video should be encoded at resolutions just high enough to be watchable, any higher is unnecessary.

For audio, the best formats are probably MP3 (.mp3), Windows Media Audio (.wma), and RealAudio(.ram). Please bear in mind that for news reports cd quality audio is not usually required, and lower qualities can easily convey speech with a much smaller filesize.
