The following parties took out ads in Gay Community News sending greetings on Pride Day: Sinn Féin; The Socialist Party; The Labour Party; Fine Gael; The Social Democratic and Labour Party.

Dont forget what she said: " This country is not ready for that [LEGAL RECOGNITION OF SAME-SEX COUPLES] and may never be ready for it."
Fianna Fáil Minister Mary Coughlan T.D. 14/5/04.

Glad to see your efforts at pricking (no pun intended) the SP conscience has succeeded. Good to see that they are now embracing 'bourgeois deviationism'.

the tiff* i had with SOME spers on this was due to an over the top position taken by an sper - ie that labour in government might scapegoat gays during an economic downturn and that gays only salvation was through supporting the sp. i dont believe that this position is held by any more than a few hardline dogmatists in the sp.

other sp members made it clear that they thought this position was absurd and that the sp had to earn support in the LGBT community by working for it. in the heat of the debate i may have made some unfair comments. in the past the CWI had a bad position on LGBT rights. that is no longer the case.

* the whole thing arose from an ad for a funraiser for ivana bacik organised bt a lgbt support group.

Actually that statement was not about the legal recognition but about gay parenting, i.e. the minister was pouring water on any notion of FF support for adoption rights.

Civil partnership is a totally different issue. FF aren't too keen. FG, who I once remember as describing homosexuality as a "very sad case" and that they were not going to legislate (circa 1986 or so) are now only dying to help. Can't be a bad thing I guess.
