Belfast Bus to Stop Bush demo

category down | anti-war / imperialism | event notice author Monday June 21, 2004 21:45author by Mark Hewitt - BAWMauthor email nowar_belfast at hotmail dot com Report this post to the editors

Bus leaves 4pm Belfast City Hall

The Belfast Anti-War Movement is organising a bus to go to the anti-Bush protest in Dublin this Friday, 25th June. The protest is in Dublin at Parnell Square starting at 7pm.

The bus will leave at 4pm to get to Dublin by 6.30pm. It will return to Belfast on the same evening leaving Dublin around 9.30pm and arriving back about midnight. The bus costs £8.

Obviously the situation in Iraq is as bad as it ever was and with the revelations of US and British torture, the rise of the resistance and the new interim government having almost no credibility we need to keep the pressure on Bush.

He is visiting Ireland to ensure good press for his election campaign in the US. We need to make sure that this does not happen.

If you want to go to the protests book a seat on the BAWM bus by ringing Andrew 0776 2379343 or Gordon on 07742 531 617

The Irish Anti-war Movement is also organising protests at Shannon Airport on Saturday the 26th. If you wish to go to these protests you can get the BAWM bus down to Dublin then organise to to go on the IAWM buses to get to Shannon.

See the IAWM website for details

Could someone please tell me what's going on down in Shannon/Dromoland/Limerick on Sat? It seems every group is doing its own thing.

The IAWM has informed me by email of its reason for deleting mention of the Friday night AWI demo at Shannon:

"No War, No Bush: Shannon Demo Friday 25th June 7pm.
We have removed this event as it directly cuts across the event we have planned for shannon."

In fact, the IAWM event planned for Shannon takes place on Saturday, not Friday, so clearly will not be effected by the AWI Friday demo. Perhaps the IAWM is more concerned about the fact that it will "lose" people to Shannon from its Dublin demo. Such competetiveness is quite unhelpful. It is also the case that several other events due to take place on Friday – just as the IAWM protest begins in Dublin – ARE endorsed by the IAWM (protests in Galway, Sligo and Waterford). Clearly, the IAWM is picking and choosing which protests can be advertised on the Irish Anti-War website: those organised by the IAWM are acceptable, those organised by others are not.

It's a pity that such sectarianism persists, given the damage it is doing to the anti-war movement in Ireland. The position of Anti-War Ireland, by contrast, is as follows: We encourage all opponents of war and Bush to join a protest this weekend, be it at Shannon, Dublin or any other town in Ireland.

Incidentally, I've reposted the event on the IAWM site (for the nth time) and would encourage others to do likewise when next it's deleted.

You seem to spend more than a few minutes trawling indymedia yourself not to mention moaning, so what was that about the kettle and the pot?

I'm not a member of any of the groups - AWI or IAWM - but I do believe that all sections of the antiwar movement should be supportive of other sections, regardless of tactical or ideological or whatever differences. Now I've just looked at an Anti-War Ireland posting by Fintan Lane on the newswire and it plugs all the demos on the Friday night, including the Dublin IAWM march and it even gives your web address!!!

Now when I went to the IAWM website I discovered that, yet again, the ad for the Shannon demo (which I hope to attend) has been erased. This has happened repeatedly with Anti-War Ireland postings on that site but whatever about that it is SHAMEFUL to obliterate all mention of the Shannon demonstration. Why???? What is that all about????

There is no shortage of antiwar protestors in this country. Why are the IAWM erasing ads for the Shannon march?

Instead of being an unfunny smartass you might answer that question.

Why didn't the BAWM organise a 'regional' demo in Belfast if they are SWPers? Isn't that the SWP, opps IAWM, policy?

And, as to first comment on this thread, yeah, Mark Hewitt (I know him of old) is a leading member of the SWP in norn Iron.

Why are they only coming as far as Dublin? They should either go straight to Shannon or else organise a demonstration in Belfast.
Are the SWP, sorry IAWM short of members?

The IAWM is NOT organising protests at Shannon airport - Anti-War Ireland is. The IAWM are going to Dromoland.

Interesting that the BAWM is fronted by SWP members. What a surprise.
