DAY 5 of the Galway, Mary Kelly "countdown."

category galway | anti-war / imperialism | news report author Wednesday June 09, 2004 23:45author by Tommy Donnellan - Galway Mary Kelly Support Groupauthor email tommyjoe at eircom dot net Report this post to the editors

We were out in strength again today with our awareness activity only being kyboshed by
the 6.00 pm closing time of the Amnesty International shop in Middle Street where Jameen, ever overflowing with the milk of human kindness, allows us to store our gear. Can't understand the view of one of the commentators to DAYS 7& 6 that we/I am "toadying up" to American tourists, the reason why I keep mentioning the American, tourist or otherwise, reaction to our stall is that the anti-Bush feeling amongst the broad majority of them is strong and palpable, more so than any other 'non nationals' that we encounter and, as such, heartens me at least. your shite sounds like 'anti-americanism' to me 'Gaillimhed' , so, in future, keep a tight rein on your bollocks and sphincter and do us all a favour, ok ?. amen

It wasn't a warplane she damaged. It was a transport aeroplane, effectively an airliner.. Get it right. Frankly I have no sympathy for her. She did the crime now do the time. She wants to be a martyr well soon she will be. The whole thing was a stupid stunt and made as much difference to the flow of American aircraft as an Iraqi missile battery and they were trying very hard.

I have been approached by four people today wanting to know about transport to Mary's trial from Dublin.

I suggest aa Dublin based mobile contact be set up where folks heading down with car space can phone in and say how many seats they have, times they are leaving (and maybe returning)....folks needing transport could call the number and be hooked up.

If there's not a better one. Mine 087 918 4552 could be used.

Also if Mary's support could paste relevant Ennis trains times and also Limerick train times/with Ennis bus connects. That wouod be helpful.

If an Ennis based mobile ph. no.could be set up with offers of accomadation (floor crash space etc/billets, church hall would be great). Also paste up ph. no. contacts for cheap B & B's in Ennis that would be great.

Ah now , no need for the abuse there tommy, if it makes you feel any better i take back the 'toadying' remark.
>
i genuinely did not mean to make any personal attack on you or your colleagues.
>
I have huge respect for what you are doing, and although i will try to reserve my spleen for more deserving candidates, my Bollocks and sphincter are my own to do what i will with.
Take it easy. really.

Please let me start by saying that I admire Mary Kelly for the hatchet job she on the plane last year. Hope she comes out tops at her trial and fair play to the activists in Galway for all the support.

Yet, it sickens me to see a photo of the same Mary Kelly and Eoin "The Pope" Rice in this month's SAOIRSE, RSF's rag. The two were in attendance at last month's CABHAR testimonial where 'veteran' republicans (one of whom fought in the Korean war) were honoured for their services to continuity republicanism.

Behan wrote that those who were against the small bombs (of the IRA) usually had nothing against the big berthas. In Mary's case it seems to be the reverse. Is she all for the Continuity IRA? Did she ask RSF's Joe O'Neill of RSF (also in attendance) about claims made by David Rupert in the recent McKevitt trial about his bomb making activities?

Fair play to all of ye, you have shown what "getting the message out there" really means. Nice one.

But, Why are we so worried about what american tourists think?.
(the article kept mentioning how many Yanks they 'didnt' offend....)
Feck them, happy or otherwise as they may be with your support of mary kelly and your Opposition to Bush, ...So what . There seems to be a toadying cap-in-hand style worry about offending our visitors from the Empire. Let them be offended. Let them go home and tell their friends that we smash up US warplanes (well, Mary Kelly does -fair play)and hate Bush. So what, let them.

Anyway, just a thought..
I think what you are doing up on shop street is absolutely brilliant.

Due to a bollocks up, DAY 8 got tacked on to the end of DAY 10. Conflated as regards photos are DAYS 7& 6, Yesterday,
due to the AIB being closed for some brown envelope stocktaking, we pitched outside Lynch's castle, as always, there was strong support from passing pedestrians, particularly from Americans with only one of them getting into a self righteous sweat over our poster on Bush's visit. Today, following a passing by two Special Branch guys, we had a visit from a uniformed Garda who harrassed us over the "Legal Defence" container for contributions on the table -having no permit, we had to sling it following threats of prosecution of Fanny Combernoux and myself. The "countdown" continues tomorrow outside the Deely and Blacoe shops. FOR CHRIST'S SAKE, WILL OTHER GROUPS OR INDIVIDUALS DO SOMETHING similiar.?????

Myself and a few friends were down at the weekend and we went straight to Shop St. to see the good work that has been ongoing for Mary's case, the war in general and this racist referendum.
Id just like to say fair play to all involved but particularly to Tommy whose tireless efforts seem to know no bounds.
We were wandering around UCG that evening and there he was again putting up GGN Ambush posters.
A great activist, one we can all take example and hope from.....
Theres a famous Rage Against The Machine line -"What does the billboard say--come and play ,come and play,Forget about the movement"
Obviously the billboard hasnt caught you yet man.
Super stuff.

Thanks Tommy for the brilliant and creative work you are doing every day, gathering support for the retrial in Ennis June 15th.

The response from the people has been very strong. American visitors to Galway, with very few exceptions, have been delighted to see the stall and petition. Its been great that you have provided a street focus for people's reactions to the Bush visit and the continuing illegal invasion of Iraq with logistical support from the Irish Government.

If we had more committed street activists like yourself this country would could really take on those fothermuckers! Fair play Tommy!

Activists from the Galway "Mary Kelly Support Group" were out in strength again, today, as
part of their "coundown" to her retrial in Ennis tomorrow week - the first posting of the coundown should have read DAY 9 rather than DAY 10. Despite the patchy pedestrian traffic in Shop Street, interest was strong at our stall with two guys from Limerick who worked at Shannon Aeronautics expressing unstinting support for Mary's action being the primo moment of theday - both said they had the privilege of viewing the results of her handiwork on the nose of the warplane. The stall continues tomorrow.

With judge Moran breathing down Mary's neck, as it were, and a ten year maximum gaol sentence staring her in the face, today, the
Galway 'Mary Kelly Support Group' stepped up their support and solidarity for her by commencing the first of ten successive "countdown" information stalls leading up to her retrial on the fourteenth of this month in Ennis, County Clare, as usual, the support was fulsome and truely heartening, particularly from passing Americans with two of them promising to man the stall next week and an Australian woman, blessed with a serious and withering contempt for premier Howard, promising to do likewise. The beleaguered Tokie Laotan (see the main story of today's Indymedia) taking time off with her travails with the racists, fair play to the fair Tokie, showed up for a while at the stall - Galway City, at the moment, is displaying its racist face in her electoral campaign for the north-east ward and I can personally vouch that it is blatant and loathsome, fuck 'em all.
