Maximum effort for Mary Kelly in Galway

category galway | anti-war / imperialism | news report author Sunday May 30, 2004 22:53author by Tommy Donnellan - Galway "Mary Kelly Support Group"author email tommyjoe at eircom dot net Report this post to the editors

Yesterday, Saturday, for the sixth week, seriatim,at the usual pitch at the bottom of Shop Street, the Galway 'Mary Kelly Support Group' manned their information table with Tokie ...
Tokie, Mary and Regina.
Tokie, Mary and Regina.

Laotan, the Nigerian candidate in the north-east ward for the City Council and Fred Johnson, the noted writer and journalist helping out, the most fulsome and enthusiastic support of the day, though, came from three young Galway girls (see photo). Stalwarts of Mary, Nick and Martha, accompanied by their three week old son, Uisce, and Martha's mother, journeyed in from Ardrahan and put in some serious service at our stall - Uisce at his mum's breast. Another powerful day of support from the public for Mary, with the only blot on the streetscape being no victuals from Phil and Brigitte, enough of this peevish begrudgery and more of your organic tomatoes, Brigitte, y'hear.? Another stall is planned for St. Mary this Saturday, amen.

Nosebag for the front line troops ... naughty Uisce, how could you.?

Fred displaying the results of a botched operation or his feelings for Mary, naughty Fred, how can you?.

Phil and Brigitte, in denial, begrudging us our victuals, y'heah ?

Beauty and the Beast ... Tokie, I'm going to do a Fred on you, where the hell is that scalpel?.

Street Wardens threatened to move mary kelly on under the road act which states signs cannot be displayed without specific permission. The wardens were acting from instructions from higher authority. They told her the table would have to go as it was an obstruction to pedestrians (even though where the table was placed, it was not obsstructing anyone) and said they would come back later. They did come back later but took no action. This may have been because there was plenty of cameras on the scene (one making a documentary on mary) and plenty of people to step in in support of mary. Also maybe because the wardens themselves didn't quite see the logic in their position. In order to recieve council permission you need to get public liability insurance (for a few million i believe) . So there is freedom of speech in Galway for those that can afford it, just as there is freedom of the press for those who own one.
