White Flags of Peace during Bush visit

Cllr. Kevin Humphreys tabled a Labour Party motion at last night's city council meeting, which called on Dublin City Council to fly white flags of peace along the Liffey Quays during the visit of President Bush, as a symbol of solidarity with the United Nations and support for International law.

way too subtle! george wouldn't get it even if it was explained to him, which it wont be.

There is nothing more pathetic than a quiet "dignified" protest that everybody ignores

Listen to 96FM

KILKENNY -- Sue Nunn interviewed me about my proposal that local B&Bs, hotels, and hostels should take down their American flags in protest of the handling of the occupation of Iraq. I suggest this tactic because even US servicemen do not walk around foreign countries displaying their insignia so no one is going to be offended when Old Glory is folded away. But there are people like me who do not believe the Bush Administration's foreign policy should be seconded by other sovereign states. Flying a foreign flag can indicate an advocacy of a position. It can also be a flash point for oppressed Iraqis or people suffering under jackboot diplomacy.

Any effective opposition would have brought a government who violated its own constitution to its knees.
Putting up peace flags is a nice idea alright but how about actually attempting to deliver peace or at least prevent our complicity in destroying it.
Hopefully Labour, especially Labour Youth will take the Bush visit a little more seriously than theyve taken some of the other Shannon protests.
Thers some good activists in LY and lets hope theyre at the forefront in the runup to June 25/26.
A little less pleasantries about peace flags along the Liffey a bit more mobilising Labour voters for the protest...

the white flag is flown to signal a desire for parley.
it is also used to signal surrender when it is waved repeatedly and accompanied by the bugle.
The white flags in the pictures above, are standards not flags, and do not symbolise anything, and by the time Bush comes, they will be a very dirty grey.

You could put the universal anti-War symbol on the flags, which looks properly like a big evil eye "falling bomb" with a red line through it. This works on many levels.

but "lovely gesture" none the less, I'm sure the Dixie press corp will give it inches and inches of coverage.

The last thing they want is a strong protest. The the white flag thing won't be understood or noticed, they'll be doing anything they can to discourage people from taking the protest into their own hands....

there were a variety of flags flown in the civil war between the industrial north of yankee racists supremacists and the agricultural south of dixie racist supremacists.

The Blacks flew the colours of Marcus Garvey.

No-one knows who won the war because it isn't over yet.
ask JFK.

fly this flag on the Liffey why not?

this was the last and final flag flown by Dixie. it's called the confederate naval jack.

The white flags in dublin would make a good point, it would be a very visable statement in the centre of our capital city. Will it stop bush no, but will it make a point that the press will pick up on yes. Mobiliation of Labour supporters will be happening anyway! Dont knock an idea because its media friendly.
