Dublin Reclaim the Streets - Breaking News

category dublin | summit mobilisations | news report author Monday May 03, 2004 17:03author by remote updater Report this post to the editors

Hrere there are the news as they arrive from today's Reclaim the Streets in Dublin.

- 4:00pm: This is it! :-) The sound system has just been set up out of that blue van. Music starts to a huge cheer at the junction of Talbot Street and Gardiner Street lower.

- 3:45pm: The crowd has now stopped at the bottom of Gardiner Street. Some police have approached a blue van and people started to chant "let them go!".. Eventually the van has made its way to the middle of the crowd.

- 3:30pm: The crowd has now set off taking to the street. Athmosphere is good and the crowd are cheering.

- 3:15pm: A few hundred people are gathering at the top of O'Connel Street, the starting point of today's RTS. Some people are drumming, and a small bicycle group has just set off.

- 4:20pm: RTS party is in full swing. The sound system is blasting out music and the crowd dancing away. The athmosphere is good, although it is now starting to rain. So far no problems with the police.

- 5:45pm: Two more sound systems (3 in total) have joined the RTS. The numbers of people joining the street party is still increasing to around 600 people at the present time.

- 6:00pm; An odd police manoeuvre has just taken place when at one end of the street party, police withdrew vehicles and then drove back close to the third sound system. Then, a green police van tried to slowly drive into the party, but people stood calmly in front of it whilst protecting the sound system. People still dancing, and apart from this incident, the athmosphere is still good and calm.

- 6:30pm: The main sound system has just packed up and put away. The second sound system is still blasting away, and people maintain the party athmosphere with dancing and drumming.

- 7:15pm: One sound system is still playing and people dancing around it. There is also a big circle of people drumming and fire juggling. Police presence seems to have diminished, so people are still chilling and partying without any problems.

- 7:45: It is now raining, but there are still over 250 people in the street party dancing to the drums and the last sound system. A police helicopter is now hovering overhead, but there is a great athmosphere of release in the party, after the days of tension and the constant avalanche of media mayhem. Lots of smiles in the crowd, but people still worried about all the people arrested who have bail, and court appearances tomorrow and Wednesday.

- 8.15pm: Still 200 people dancing away to the beats of one sound system and drums. Good vibes in the party, although there seem to be increased number of police in the area.

author by remote updaterpublication date Mon May 03, 2004 23:08author address author phone Report this post to the editors

- 9:30pm: There are still around 100 people at the RTS, but the street party is now winding down. The situation in the area is calm.
