Facts vs Facts

category dublin | summit mobilisations | news report author Sunday May 02, 2004 23:20author by Ed Lee - NUJ/BA2's of Griffauthor email fire_dragon54 at yahoo dot co dot uk Report this post to the editors

A simple retort to some comments made...

A few more pics for your consideration...
'Oh yeah now I feel like a man...'
'Oh yeah now I feel like a man...'

Yes there are a lot of facts coming from all different directions.
But lemme just say this: Yes the authorities declared Phoneix Park would be closed off...but not the Navan road where all the shit happened. People had a right to free protest but yet the cops pushed the people all the way back down. I saw many people trying to calm the crowd down, scolding at hooded folks to stop throwing things and rallying the crowd by shouting 'peaceful protest.'
Let's face it, the so-called 'violent' protestors were anything but intimidating towards the police (c'mon the water cannon was a pussy, people ran away cos the wittle wascals were afraid of gettin wet, awww...well me too cos *ahem* i didn't want my expensive camera gettin the water treatment)
The hardest thing anyone hurled was a glass bottle, and that hit the ground before it reached any shield. The strongest 'weapon' i saw being used was a flag pole. I also saw someone using some sort of 'mini explosive' that they hurled at an unocuupied garda van, but that wasn't used against the riot police.
I was filming from the front lines and lots of people weren't provoking any sort of physical agression. Though i do admit when the Wombles approached there was a short period of aggravation, but after the water cannons were used they had lost the 'drive.' Yes things like bottles were thrown, but that's what the shields were for, i mean thank god they weren't molotov cocktails or something.
I did focus in a particular womble who took 2 bricks from a garden and approached near the police line but he eventually wussed out.
The police had no need to advance in as the crowd had no intention of pushing through anymore. Some just wanted to a 'sit down' protest but even they were lynched away as the guards advanced in on the already retreating crowd, and some just acted the bollix by prancing around drunk in front of them- these are the people the police are supposed to protect the public from?? The whole goddamn city centre is full of prancing drunks on a saturday evening!!
One particular image i have was when 3 people just stood there, raising the 'PACE' flag in front of the police line.
And for your information, 'Wilzer'(who made a comment http://www.indymedia.ie/newswire.php?story_id=64779): the guards were forcibly removing reporters like me off from the wall and in one particular instance they pushed & threatened an old man pushing his bicycle heading in their direction, who was funnily enough completely oblivious to what was going on. Can't argue there that the police were guilty on that part. Don't worry pal, i got it all on tape. Check the other pics i posted on my story 'Photos of Ashtown/Navan Rd.'

Good honest non sensationalised story and another thing just for the record not everyone who masked up caused violence, some of us just dont like are faces in police files.

yea.....cos everyone knows that water cannons are useless against fire!

even if it was molotovs, that wouldn't present much of a threat to the scum with their armour, shields, etc., and certainly wouldn't justify the way some of them were acting

mate, fire can do a lot of damage to someone's face quite quickly, especially when it's soaked in petrol.

that is me in ornage wig dancing a "lusca" at front line because i was so cold after drenching from cannon- above image 'ooh these bricks are too heavy!'

"non violent action for better world" was the placard i wore around my neck, orange wig on my head, and my tux
i got dressed up for the occasion
to democratically demonstrate against the direction the EU is going
-neoliberalism
-militirism
-fortress europe

i have spent the last few weeks with a lot of lovely, creative, peaceful, strong people.

i was at front line for a long time
some black block were throwing stuff, kicking etc. i oppose this- they do not protest for me
i did what i could to end violence
"no threat, non violent" i repeated to my riot cop who smashed into me for no reason
the guy beside me was struck on the head and fell- he too was non violent
i made an issue of this guy, and got imc vid headz to document it,
asked him did he want to hurt me- he gave me a very frightening stare and tapped his shield- as i read it "yes i am going to hurt you bad-hippy" i made a exageraated dramatic issue of how we were engaged in absolute non vioence- ahimsa- and yet they wanted to hurt us
the cannon drenched us- my placard was fired off- i think at one stage he was going for me as i was a threat with my color, as opposed to the black bloc (group who mostly all in black and faces covered) i was in orange wig and face on show- expressing individual care and use of non-violence.
things heated up and many people were struck- the cops went over the top when we turned our backs on them and made the front line an absolutely non violent non confrontational line with arms interlinked - we spanne d the width of the road and walked away from them as they pushed us on- they sped up and began to
reach- smack- grab!!
when arms reach away from the cops they struck directly on peoples skulls (supposed to be left as last resort)when demonstrator fell the police riot line walked over, with some kicks and line 2 took away
we tried to pick up our friends as best we could- lifting up friends who were bleeding dark red blood down their face and did not know where they were is frightening- non sure how they are- a lot of people are shook up and were crying

got into town and went for a pint- got text from family at home who watched me live on sky news- they hoped i was not arrested or hurt- i was lucky- others were not

bottom line
some engaged in violence
most did not
i did what i could to persuade them to stop- ie premier mans last puc
cops were over the top
what mattered for them was to get the pr shot of cannon and agro cops- who can beat of these activists
this is the proof that george bush wants
we will oppose his visit- we will tell the truth- more are finding out, more are joining us- we are winning

who does not want a fun, sustainable, peaceful, existence

it is a war of information
we are challenging apathy- today most dont care
we act and have a beatiful creative existence- it is spirit it is full
humans desire happiness, apathetic people today see our actions- hear what we are about and are joining us
its about being ALIVE

Lovely sentiments in the statement.
You really did your best, didn't you?

Now you know full well that the vast majority of the social movements and collectives in Ireland are pacifists and you have been through them and us, with a fine comb for so long, you can tell the difference between bluster and words and reality.

What is going to be your "post-mortem" analysis?

I took the photos as a favour to mr fupsey.

He can explain his motivation himself, but personally I like it when people print out newswire debates and share them in a public setting.

The only difference between this instance and others is that I took photos of the event.

for me its a "war" on 2 fronts
1-todays unfair global systems
2-info war, massive public lack of awareness of issues and the apathy

so attempting to be creative and getting the word out is the key, getting more people aware and involved?

as indymedia is open public system i printed off stuff to post on walls- 2 pix your article and mine only- for clarity

then wrote

who knows how many people have read it

dont worry lads
there will be far more postings up around the city

OPEN communication networks: using real and virtual together, hand in hand. both the info content and the real physical networks of people
PARTICIPATION- acts to get more aware and discussing, or at least seeing and questioning- all can get invovled- diversity is healthier

easy to generalise this movement as is done today.
but when there is a better balance with different looking people through increased diversity: the black block beside, say, the "concerned businessmen in suits" to irish chinese cultural group to clowns for peace to gardai for positive change to dublins "radical grannies"..... then this movement will be accelerating at an even healthier pace and direction.

many views, many looks, many colors- much action by more to attempt to see a better world.

its only early days, but already its rocking

there is no need for violence on our part- humour is a far stronger device

Ed Lee, did you have camera or film camera or sound recording device?
do you have footage of when that arm linked, back turned line was made?

anyone have details, or know where i can find them, of the "media walls" they used have, i think in china, whereby the single paper would be pasted on, the community came and read it and discussed with itself the content etc.
im trying to find images of this and it is proving difficult

reach- smack- grab!!

a second line also formed infront of us.
our line did last for some minutes untill too many people were being hit

arms interlinked, facing away from cops back toward town.
this was also the time when the clear zone between cops and protest line was hugley reduced from 10 metres to 1 metre. they also sped up their march into us, intimidation or need for arrests?

I do have some arm-linked footage yeah, and some of the people who just sat down. But i was zooming in and out all over the place so it's not too consistent.
I'll just piece together the footage i have...
Can I send a file to Chekov or some of the editors again so they can put it up here?? I'll keep it under 10 MB.

hi lads
dunk here in lille
peut etre la plus interessant chose dans tous la monde
(perhaps the most interesting thing in all the world)
FUSPEY film just shown; phantom fm on now

there is an indymedia node here in lille; so i am here connecting the networks; EASA, indymedia, la monde, the people of Roubaix

more later
in about 2 days time i am hoping to put on a public screening of indymedia material including mayday 04; followed by open public forum with and for the people of roubaix; the open exhibition has also begun; some subverts are alredy appearing, some derelict buildings might be turned into communication spaces, nicarqgua people are here; muralismo

also IFSO stuff has been given to the eauipe frqncais; so GNU and LINUX systems are go; more workshops will follow; hopefully all 400+ people will recieve free software and distribute by copyleft philosophy

the 30 foot container is outside in the street; the lads from clare and carlow have the angle grinders and paint and booze, so the irish bar will be up and running soon
"the old ways are going........" sang luke

sorry if this is somewhat chaotic, it is part of "wandering workshop"

indymedia is one of the most progressive networks that IS changing the way the world is running
thanks to all involved

(there will be TAO readings in the streets of lille today; along with screenings from a trolly, cardboard TV. radio bits, muraLILLEismo, acting the bollix)

can someone please inform richard boyd barret re this and others.....

bottom line is this
it is great and important for all to take action against that which is wrong
it is easy to be ANTI stuff (wto, bush regime, nazi, fascist)
but perhaps it is harder to be FOR things,

alex gave me a few key ingrediants, we made the NETWORK PORTAL at 8.30 this morning, after fuck all sleep due to song singing with romania and palinka, similar to puiteen

hopefully paraply pdfs will be online soon

the global network project is known as la "pourquai pas" (why not) here in france, as of yesterday

anyway, links, clear reporting, imqges to follow. this is report from front line
perhaps near fm might be able broadcast the forum; if we make the necessary tek connections, where indymediq comes in)

so
being FOR things

we are FOR fun, sustainable, peaceful, existence

creativity and fun are the key to it, when there is no line between APCWPP
art, political, cultural, work, play, party

this is all OPEN, join us, help us, PARTICIPATE

hazy, spontaneous manifesto/ report ends.
