Coke Ban Referendum to be held at NUI Maynooth

category national | consumer issues | event notice author Thursday April 29, 2004 19:47author by Ellen - Global Awareness Society Report this post to the editors

Referendum to be held next week at NUI Maynooth on the ban of coke from SU premises.

The 'ban coke campaign' at NUI Maynooth claimed a victory yesterday. Petition sheets were verified and an announcement made that a referendum will be held next Wednesday 5th May on whether or not to ban the sale of coke in SU premises.
A group of students comprising the Global Awareness Society and other non-affiliated will be campaigning to support the ban. Young Fine Gael will be coming out against the ban. We pro-ban people are feeling very optimistic. Many of us have never undertaken a campaign like this before and i know it sounds kind of soppy, but it's true - with clear convictions and the support of people who care about real issues, you can make a difference!

Can you really not live without Coke for a few hours at a time? it tastes like piss anyway.. If you really get the urge though, there's shops off campus.. its just about making a point, and highlighting what happened in Colombia.. and is your right to Coke at university more important than the right to life?

Well, ye have my vote anyway...i've been doing my own personal little boycott of coca cola products for the past four years (i don't agree with their bombardment advertising policies, the way they treat their staff, and of course the multi-national corporatism that they represent), anyway, its great to see the posters and stuff around college, reminds me that i am not alone! i reckon we're thinking too small though, i'd personally like to see the back of the coke machines they plonked into my hall on campus, (imagine my suprise when that showed up there last year), i really don't appreciate having to walk past that baby every day!

It so brave of students to take on Coca-Cola like this isn't it. Pity they wouldn't focus on the Big drink companies or even worse the drug dealers on all the campuses in Ireland. Drink and drugs are doing more damage to irish students than coca-cola is. All these so-called movements are a bunch of chicken shits, they are afraid to tackle any real issues

As someone who was involved in both referenda in UCD I wish all those in Maynooth the best for tomorrow. I think that the Coca Cola referenda in UCD, TCD and tomorrow in Maynooth were very important throughout the past year. They highlighted the human rights abuses of Coca Cola in Colombia and showed how important solidarity is with Trade Unionists that are facing oppression in Colombia.

I was involved in the coke referendums in UCD and one of the convincing arguments we used was that it wasn't UCD alone. Thanks for backing us up on that and whether you win or lose i'll remember you made the stand.

is any plans for a campaign to ban coke in DCU next year?
