24 Hour Access to UCD Library Won by Students

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Thursday April 08, 2004 12:59author by Oisín Kelly - UCDSU Education Vice Presidentauthor email sueducation at ucd dot ieauthor address Office G19, Student Centre, Belfield, D4./ UCDSU Office, 2nd Floor, Earlsfort Terrace, D2.author phone 01 7163111 (Belfield), 01 7165515 (Earlsfort Terrace) Report this post to the editors

24/7 Access to start from Tuesday 13th April 2004

The UCD Belfield Library will be opening for 24 hour access for 5 weeks starting from Tuesday 13th April.

The Library will be open throughout the Bank Holiday weekend and the weekends. The 5th floor of the Main Library building will be opened for students to use in the exam period.

This victory is largely due to students involved in the Library Occupations in November and December of last year. Hundreds of students occupied the Belfield and Earlsfort Terrace Libraries in protest against cuts in the University Budget. This year UCD's budget was cut by 10% resulting in savage cuts in staff and opening hours in the Library.

Now some poor bastard has to work nights in order for a load of smelly middle class wasters to cram the work in that they should have been doing instead of out spending my taxes in the shaggin' pub.

Mr Angry you are an idiot. Do you propose that students not be allowed into pubs? what next social welfare reciepients not allowed into pubs?

why not look at it the other way. A worker will now have a job getting good overtime pay to look after the library.

great news, however is oisin going to leave that office of his to let the students know about the opening hours or will he use indymedia as his sole method of communication to students

....while this is good news and it is true that the SU first raised the demands for a 24-7 library, triumphalism would be a bit stupid considering the battles facing activists next year as the college steps up its desired transformation of UCD into something fully in line with Eu harmonisation, semesterisation being one step away from privatisation (modulatisation = breaking down courses into smaller pieces which can then be sold off through fees to state or private interests). Maybe Oisin could tell us something about how the college authorities agenda is beconing increasingly clear since Brady got into office? Students beign referred to as customers etc. Next year, the student union could very well be facing into its very own miners strike in trying to stop semesterisation, Oisin what do you think?
