The Snake Bush Pursued by St P through Galway Streets

category galway | anti-war / imperialism | news report author Wednesday March 17, 2004 18:50author by Niall Farrell - Galway Alliance Against War Report this post to the editors

In the St Patrick’s Day Parade in Galway today, the Patron Saint banished the war criminal Bush from Ireland’s shores. That was the theme of the Galway Alliance Against War float. A snake with George Bush’s head was pursued through the streets of Galway by a peace loving St Patrick. And the crowd applauded in support of St Paddy.
Appropriately, in its statement for St Patrick’s Day the Galway peace group called “on St Patrick to return in June and banish from our shores the evil snake George W. Bush and all his deadly vipers that land daily in Shannon en route to kill in occupied Iraq.”

STATEMENT FROM THE GALWAY ALLIANCE AGAINST WAR FOR THE SAINT PATRICK’S DAY PARADE IN GALWAY – MARCH 17TH 2004

Last year at the St Patrick’s Day Parade the Galway Alliance Against War predicted that thousands of innocent Iraqi civilians would be killed in the event of a needless US & British invasion of Iraq. We have unfortunately been proven right.

Last year, we predicted that these people would be forgotten by the warmongers, written off as expendable – “collateral damage”. Again we have been proven right: There has been no day of mourning or even a minute silence for these poor victims of US and British state terrorism.

Last year, we predicted that this US-led war would be about oil. Again we have been proven right: The natural oil wealth of Iraq has been greedily divided among the wealthy supporters of George Bush and Dick Cheney.

This year, we call on St Patrick to return in June and banish from our shores the evil snake George W. Bush and all his deadly vipers that land daily in Shannon en route to kill in occupied Iraq.

Like last St Patrick’s Day the slogan of the Galway Alliance Against War remains both Irish and International: Give Peace A Chance – Tabhair Seans don tSíocháin.

As I sit here in New York feeling a bit sad watching our St. Patrick's Day Parade push militarism, and listening to WBAI's alternate programming of real Irish songs of struggle, I have come across this wonderful article. My husband of thirty years who died five years ago marched in front of the British Embassy in New York during the time of Thatcher and the hunger strikers, but he also fought for the grape workers under Cesar Chavez and civil rights movement with Martin Luther King. If he were alive now what would he think of the phony pumped up chauvinism that passes for Irish pride here in America. That is not to say that there are not many Irish Americans who are for peace and justice, but you never hear about them in the media. James Connolly would be proud of all of you because he knew that to be truly for Irish freedom is to be for the freedom for all. He fought WWI and the brutality against all soldiers in that Great War.

You have warmed my 60 year old poet's heart. I hold you in my thoughts and as we struggle against the war here we know that you there and in Span and everywhere are against this waste of precious human life.

Bravo Galway!

The Dublin Catholic Worker crew took a window ledge of the AIB Bank near Dublin Castle on Dame today with a huge banner of St.Patrick and his pacifist quote "Killing Cannot Be With Christ!" Sylvia and Justin did some leafletting and there were a lot of interesting interactions with folks. As the West Point Academy band paused in front of us a cry rang out "To Bring the Boys Home! U.S. Military out of Iraq!"

Curiously our peace banner was the only image of St. Patrick on this heavilly corporate event.

The Derry FEICers were heading out to Raytheontoday as well.

Your little stunt in Galway is pathetic. Grow up. All the more reason for George Bush to visit Ireland. If you force George Bush to cancel visit to Ireland, how many American tourists do you think will cancel their visits to Ireland also? But, I'm sure you don't care a shit about that, as bringing about mass unemployment and emigration is the Left's only hope of achieving power in Ireland.

its not about whats left, its about whats right. Get it? Right, but not righteous. There can be a lot of righteous moral posturing on the @ "left". Whats important is knowing what's right, living whats right, and doing whats right.. trying at least. god bless, and lighten up. if you are unhappy with your job and life, leave it, sell your house and live a little. ciao bello.

It's all very well slagging off Bush and calling him Hitler, but what would you do about Al Qaeda???
